Upgradable Sports Games instead of New Ones?

Got this idea from the SvR08 thread.

I wish they'd start making one game per system. For, say, $70-$80, you get a well-rounded Football/Baseball/Wrestling/Whatever game, and every year or so, you pay around $10-$20 for new uniforms, stadiums, updated roster, modes, etc.

Obviously the companies will lose money this way (which is why it will never happen) but I would imagine it would take less man-power (thus less money out of their pocket) for, say, one year to only release uniforms and updated roster and the next to release a new mode and updated rosters.

Even if they didn't do it for every game, it would be nice if they did this for their older games, especially now that two of the three major systems has a good-sized storage device. They could still release full games, but still make money off of people who buy a certain sports game every two years or so (which is what I do, except for wrestling).

Any thoughts on this?

I agree.

I usally buy a new madden every 2 years, only bought it this year and last because i switched from ps2 to 360, same with my football game. I usally buy the new smackdown vs raw game simply because there tends to be a little more update then your average madden or fifa game.

It would be so much better if you could just use your xbox live points to update the game rather then buy a whole new version. The companies wont do it as you said because of the amount of money they would lose, but with EA having sole control of the nfl franchise now, its not like there not going to make money by going this route and in a perfect world it be nice to see them give something back to gamers, but it aint a perfect world. Good idea in theory though

What happens when new teams come out? I know it's not frequent, but yeah.

Well I couldn't see them ever making one game for like as long as a system is going on. I can see them making one for like three years and then changing it.

Never happen.

One of the things upgraded regularly is the graphics. This is actually part of the appeal because people go OMGAMAZINGGRAFXWOOOOW!

The Destroyer 02-18-2007 09:16 AM

Yeah, because EA would really give up their license to print money for an idea like that.

As long as gamers keep buying every yearly update, things are not going to change.

Kane Knight 02-18-2007 09:57 AM

Actually, considering the costs associated, it could be a lot better for them to just overcharge for the updates.

MTH15 02-18-2007 12:44 PM

Excellent idea. But how would you get the updates? Online? From a store?

Destor 02-18-2007 12:44 PM

Yeah, they would loose to much money on that idea. NEXT.

Let's see...All three consoles have some actual store where downloadable concept either hass been or will be developed.

Probably downloadable. Physical media would make the idea far less feasible.

I'm actually surprised PC sports games don't take advantage of a concept like that.

I apologise as I am one of the morons who keep giving them money to produce the same game every year with a minor tweak.

And why did they delete the lower leagues on Fifa 2007? :(
