Best 5 defenses EVER? (Football)

Okay after watching the America's Game series on NFL network I saw some very good defenses. The Bears always have had good defense. So however you see it, Defensive TD's, stats, or W/E.Your top 5 defenses and explain why.

5. 72 Dolphins, Rock solid Defense
4. 98 Falcons, TRUST me I've watched highlights.
3. 00 Ravens, A lot of turnovers and returns
2. 78 Steelers, Steel Curtain plz?
1. 85 Bears, purely unstopable

CNM 02-12-2007 07:41 PM

98 Falcons? LOL. The Broncos torched them in the Super Bowl.

MTH15 02-12-2007 07:47 PM

Before that. They were horribly exposed in the super bowl but that whole season they were rock solid.

Kris P Lettus 02-12-2007 08:09 PM

Trust him, he's seen the highlights..

Jesus Shuttlesworth 02-12-2007 08:13 PM

Returns have nothing to do with defense

I don't know what the top 5 defenses are though, it is way too hard to rank.

Kris P Lettus 02-12-2007 08:22 PM

STEEL CURTAIN

MTH15 02-12-2007 08:37 PM

Hell yea I forgot about the Steel curtain...And when I said Returns I meant blocks and Fg returned for TD's (Hester :])

CNM 02-12-2007 08:38 PM

The 2000 Ravens were 10 times better than the 98 Falcons. Dunno how you left them off of there.

MTH15 02-12-2007 08:52 PM

Dont think I'm BS-ing but I seriously was going to put them up there. I remember watching them the whole season. Guess I forgot =\

Supreme Olajuwon 02-12-2007 09:19 PM

I'm sure you watched the Falcons highlights but they weren't even ranked in the top 5 of just 1998.

Supreme Olajuwon 02-12-2007 09:25 PM

If you watch all the Falcons highlights then I'm sure you caught a glimpse of the 2002 Tampa Bay defense. That team was gross.

Supreme Olajuwon 02-12-2007 09:30 PM

And while I'm in a bitching mood the 00 Ravens would shit on the Steel Curtain. You can debate all you want over who's better between the Ravens and Bears but the 78 Steelers don't even belong in that talk.

BCWWF 02-13-2007 07:47 AM

Lol were you even alive in 1972, and if so, were you above the age of 10?

RP 02-13-2007 07:55 AM

2007 Colts ( trust me i've watched highlights )

SammyG 02-13-2007 01:43 PM

hahaha

MTH15 02-13-2007 03:38 PM

Highlights highlights and more highlights. You see Steel Curtain highlights all the time. And the 98 Falcons weren't good statistically but they were good when it counted. Like stopping teams and getting the win.

And they were good when it counted the most, right? like in the Superbowl?

MTH15 02-13-2007 05:08 PM

Damn I'm on the hot seat. Like in games when they needed it most. 3rd Downs they we stopped the opposing team and then got a field goal and stopping game winning drives. We just flat out sucked balls in the Super Bowl. Everything on the Broncos offense clicked and the stuff we did going into the game were stupid. One of our players were critricizing(?) us and up partying all night. We lost that game before we even got to play in it.

CNM 02-13-2007 05:13 PM

LOL, the Broncos outclassed the Falcons in that game. They put up 450+ yds of offense and it easily could have been more. The Falcons had no shot, and it was mostly because of their defense. Their D probably wasn't even top 5 that season.

MTH15 02-13-2007 05:31 PM

Uh they weren't. You guys can think the 98 Falcons D sucked but I personally think they were good. Thats my opinion. I didn't think too hard when I put those 5 teams. The 02 bucs were awsome and the 95 49ers were good to me.

Flair Wooo 02-13-2007 06:03 PM

liverpool f.c

MTH15 02-13-2007 06:08 PM

..What the hell is liverpool f.c

BCWWF 02-13-2007 06:31 PM

Falcons shouldn't have even been in the Super Bowl that year. The Vikings were hands down the best team in the NFC, but as per Dennis Green they underperformed in the playoffs and then the first field goal Gary Anderson missed all season was also the one that would have brought the Vikes to the Super Bowl. The Falcons were a fluke.

Some small soccer team in northwest England that can't seem to beat it's archrival Everton this season.

Gonzo 02-13-2007 06:35 PM

I would have to say that the '86 and '90 Giants had to be up there. Lawrence Taylor in his prime baby. I was only like 4 but their reputation kind of precedes them. I don't think you can call someone the best, every defense you can talk about plays different competition etc.

MTH15 02-13-2007 06:48 PM

Yea they got an Americas game on the 90's Giants this Thursday or Friday that I was going to watch. I also think when the Redskins had Dexter Manley they were okay too. It seems like Linebackers always show when they have a good defense. Derrick Brooks, Ray Lewis, Mike Singletary, ect....And I think in the NFL luck is VERY RARE. You cant say when the Redskins blocked the cowboys kick and got a 15 yard facemask was luck. It was skill and brain. When the Saints Hailmarried the Falcons at that halftime it was skill. So yea. Unless a team is losing by 5 and the team fumbles a snap when they were going to down the ball and the other team takes it for six...I dont see luck.

RP 02-14-2007 01:23 AM

Did you guys see the Colts defense in the playoffs? That shit was ill son. THAT SHIT WAS ILL!

VonErichLives 02-14-2007 03:14 AM

ESPN page 2 did a list.

http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/bestNFLdefense.html

5 of them were before I was born and 2 of them I was 2yrs or less... so, I really only recall 3 of the 10 listed.

I'd take the Ravens over the Bears (but it's close) however if you're going on just playoffs, you'd have to take the Bears.

Also, the argument of "The Falcons stopped teams when they needed to" can really be made of every team that went on to win a superbowl and some that didn't. What your describing is the "bend don't break" defense... The only time that works to be considered a great defense is if that defense shut down opponents when they got to the Red Zone.

Supreme Olajuwon 02-14-2007 10:52 AM

The Ravens and the Bears were both pretty incredible in the playoffs. I might go with the Ravens because they played four games and two on the road in places that have two of the best home field advantages in the NFL. They never gave up more than one TD in all four playoff games and the other teams' scores were 3, 10, 3, and 7 with two of those games being at Tennessee and at Oakland.

It's a good discussion topic to say the least.

MTH15 02-14-2007 12:59 PM

Well Playoff's is a whole different story. The 99 Bucs and 99 Rams had a PRETTY good defensive struggle but of course you know the rams won that. The 05 Falcons handled the rams in the divisional pretty well. The 02 Bucs and 00 Ravens were hardcore. The 85 Bears Basically owned everybody. 95 49er's had Deion Sanders and that other FS dude that had like 7 INT's. In 06 the Steelers Defense wasn't Bombay but they were good. The list goes on an on.

Supreme Olajuwon 02-14-2007 02:48 PM

I know you really like the Falcons but they do not belong in any of these conversations. Giving up 17 points in a game to an 8-8 Rams team at home in the playoffs does not qualify the Falcons as a good playoff defense.

MTH15 02-14-2007 03:27 PM

Just saying they did O.K....not great but OK

No, I'm pretty sure putting them in your top 5 all time is saying they were more then "ok"

I am a huge Falcons fan, and there is no way I would rate any Falcons team as the best defense ever. The only good thing the Falcons did in 98 was somehow hold back maybe one of the best offenses ever in the 98 Vikings out of the Superbowl. They gave up a ton of points in that game too.

MTH15 02-17-2007 07:07 PM

Damnit. Okay the Falcons are out of my top 5. No more disscussion about the Falcons defense except it needs help. And I was saying the 05 Falcons defense against the Rams did Ok not the 98 Falcons. So um.. how bout those 00 Ravens? I know somebody already mentioned them but I think they were awsome. Personally my favorite players were Duane Starks, Kim Herring and Chris McCallister(?), because I am a DB and they got a lot of turnovers. Ed Reed is one of my favorites now too.

Are you kidding me? How many Future Hall of Famers did that Defense have. Come on. Honestly. The only way they should be in the same talk is because they are above and beyond that Ravens Defense. Yea it was good, but your talking the Steel Curtain for christ sakes.

MTH15 02-18-2007 12:13 PM

I think the 78 Steelers altogether had a great team. Terry and Fraco and Swann(I think they had them in 78). That probably helped there defense too. The defense looks awsome to me when you have a great offense.
