30 Days with Linux
Here's an article from the mighty hardocp.com about a guy who spent a month using ubuntu linux instead of Windows.
http://consumer.hardocp.com/article....xoY29uc3VtZXI= Quite a good read, I'm prob too much of a MS fanboy to go any other way though. |
LOL, wrong forum.
I'm using Mepis for my Laptop OS. If I didn't game I'd use it on my main PC as well. Very good OS. I'm not crazy about Ubuntu, tried it a few times and there are quite a few problems I run into including BOTH my PCs (Laptop and tower), especially with sound. Unfortunately, as I said and as the article says, it's not easy to game well on Linux. Well, really it's not easy to game well on any platform other than Windows. If I had the choice between a Mac and Linux box I'd go Linux any day. |
yeah, I had to make a tough choice about what forum to post it in, but the Computer help forum doesn't really get many views, and I figured some people might be interested in it to run their video games on ;)

I'm a fan of Ubuntu but I would never use it for gaming.
|
I've got knoppix on a cd somewhere, but I never use it much.
|
I've never cared much for Linux. I tried to install Redhat on my machine once, I spent 2 days downloading it, cleaned my hard drive, installed Linux and.. What? This looks just like DOS.. I saw screenshots of an actual OS, and I spent about a day trying to figure out how to boot up the actual OS, and I couldn't for the life of me find out. So I reinstalled Windows.
Really I don't see what the big deal is, Windows does everything I need it to. |
The main difference (for average users) is that every bit of software is (legally, since I know this forum loves the Piracy thang, yarrr) free. It takes a lot to set it up (a bit less with a distro like Ubuntu), that's true, but once it's up, unless you game it's an extremely stable system.

So unless you're really good at doing everything command line, you might want to consider buying it. I'd probably have it myself, tbh, but I can't e arsed screwing round too much with my tempermental computer. |
Ah, maybe I'll buy it sometime just to check it out then.
|
I'm going to try Ubuntu and see what it's like. The interface looks much simpler than Redhat (which made my brain hurt). If i like the Live CD version then i'll just install it to my other HD.
