Rockabilly/Psychobilly

I think I've got a pretty good handle on psychobilly (Nekromantix, The Meteors, Demented Are Go!, Tiger Army, etc.), but I'm looking for more of the original rockabilly sound. Anybody listen to this kind of shit?

M-A-G 03-17-2007 01:33 AM

My friend does.....all the time. It drives me f*cking crazy.

ron the dial 03-17-2007 02:37 AM

Thanks for all the f*cking help, M-A-G.

Reverend Horton Heat is definitive rockabilly. Listen to the Holy Roller album. It will kick your ass.

Downunder 03-17-2007 07:53 AM

I just did a search on Demonoid for Reverend Horton Heat and came up with 10 albums - give us your top 2 Mister Barnes.

I like "Holy Roller" and "Martini Time"

Kane Knight 04-01-2007 11:57 AM

Elvis

NO WAY.

I'm not completely retarded to the genre, just wondering if there were some other solid acts out there besides the "big names."

Kane Knight 04-01-2007 12:05 PM

Dude, half this forum thinks Punk started in 1996. How the fuck am I supposed to knwo if you're remotely competent?

ron the dial 04-01-2007 12:15 PM

Fair enough. Let's just assume that I have a fair amount of knowledge about music. Certainly enough to know that punk rock started in 1998 with Blink-182's Enema of the State :shifty:

Kane Knight 04-01-2007 12:37 PM

Eddie Cochrane? Jerry Lee Lewis?

These are guys I consider BIG names, but often seem to get forgotten. I don't know how in-depth your knowledge really is, but they were fairly important in the development.

I've got a lot of what Sun Records put out (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.), and that record label seems to encompass most of what went on in rockabilly. Haven't really heard much (or searced too much, really) outside of Sun.

Kane Knight 04-01-2007 02:51 PM

Don't remember who was on Sun Records. See if I hit any you haven't heard:

Sleepy LaBeef
Carl Perkins
Wanda Jackson (Like many of these poeople, she wasn't strictly Rockabilly. Unfortunately, she was MOSTLY country, but my exposure to her when I was younger was pretty kickass)
James Burton (I've actually never heard him, but my dad RAVES about him)
Speedy West (Again, more Country, but Rockabilly_Style)

Sun Records pretty much boosted the careers of anybody associated with early rockabilly. That's where Elvis, Cash, Lewis, Perkins, Orbison, and a hand few of others got their big breaks. Definitely work checking out some Sun Records compilations.

Yeah, I know Sun Records, And I've got some stuff on their label (Jerry Lee Lewis the Sun years, and a couple of others). But aside from Sleepy, who at one point was effeectively the ONLY guy on Sun's label, I couldn't remember anyone on their label (At the time...I just dropped Jerry because I found that CD when unpacking).

I'm sure my father's got an assload more than I do, too, since this is more his generation than mine. I just tend not to remember labels that well.

He slings some mean strings...

Glad you liked it. If you like that type and want to check out some old school, try Gene Vincent.

Try Viva Hate. Saw them with AFI, not too bad.
