Question about ethnic diversity in the world title scene
For sake of argument WWE(F) and WCW main event titles are obviously world, but in this tally, lets include the ECW (past and present), NWA and, AWA main event/world/heavyweight titles as well. And I was just wondering, besides for the one billion white guys who have held the titles, what about minorities? Here is a list by my count (granted I don't know the history of AWA or NWA all that well).
Black champions (4.5): Ron Simmons Booker T Bobby Lashley The Rock (only counts as half cause I'm including him else where) Ron Killings Arab/Persian (3): Ask AAA, there is a difference between Arabs and Persians but I'm lumping them together Iron Sheik Sabu Polynesian (3): Yokozuna The Rock (again only counts as half) Batista (half Philipino...last I checked they are Polynesian, and the Greek part counts as white) Jimmy Snuka Latino (4): Eddie Guerrero Rey Mystero Jr. Pedro Morales Tito Santana Asian/Oriental (3): Antonio Inoki Great Muta Masato Tanaka Let me know if I missed anyone or if you have any dissputes. |
Antonio Inoki is not Latino, he is Japanese.
Pedro Morales held the WWWF Championship. |
Also, I don't remember reading about the Sheik holding anything other than national level titles within the NWA. Not sure about the AWA though.
Ron "The Truth" Killings was NWA champ.
Also Batista is Greek/Philipino.
Jimmy Snuka (Polynesian), Tito Santana (Latino) and Masato Tanaka (Asian/Oriental) have all been ECW World Champion.
Dont forget Taz
Current WWE champion John Cena is black.
