Getting your rise to fame too late?

I have thoroughly convinced myself that if Finlay were 10-8 years younger in modern day and still had the same gimmick that he would be huge. The guy knows what he's doing, he knows the business, he knows his character, he knows his overall role in the company. Only problem is that his age is weighing him down a bit as far as movement and physical shape goes.

Is there anybody else that you can think of that got their moment in the spotlight just a little too late?

Jeritron 03-27-2007 11:59 PM

Keep convincing yourself man. Huge? come on dude.

McLegend 03-28-2007 12:00 AM

Obviously Bad News Brown

Dorkchop 03-28-2007 12:04 AM

He wouldn't be huge, but could have been a sweet mid carder in the Attitude era provided he was in the WWE. A guy didn't have to be the world champ to be a name in wrestling up until a few years ago. He could have had some great matches in the Hardcore and IC division.

Xero 03-28-2007 12:05 AM

I don't think he would have gotten any farther than mid card jobber without his Japan and ECW days to be honest. A big part of Foley's breakout was bringing back his history.

...Finley.

:)

Finlay?!? There's more to a match than being "technically sound." You have to be able to work the crowd. Finlay doesn't. You have to be flashy sometimes. Finlay isn't. I'm sorry but Finaly is boring, and that's why he'll never be taken seriously as a main eventer. Don't forget his abysmal promo skills, too.

I'd have to agree. Finley is a great "fighter", his matches are decent, but nothing to write home about. Even 8-10 years ago, i couldn't see him going any further than TV title in WCW or the European Belt in the Attitude Era WWF.

Yeah, he needs flash and mic skills to be big in modern day WWE. Like Bobby Lashley, right? Or Batista, right?

Xero 03-28-2007 12:12 AM

Actually, you need to be big in modern day WWE to be big.

Johnny Vegas 03-28-2007 12:12 AM

Batista lol

It's a simple fact, they still have flash in the ring, when you see a big guy hit a really high impact move ( I.e Lashley Spear or Bastista hit a spine buster), it will get you into the match, as almost a slap in the face to wake you up.

I understand your argument, but from what i've seen of finley, current Gimmick there is nothing that would really get me going.

Jura 03-28-2007 12:16 AM

I don't like Finlay. Never have and never will.

Nark Order 03-28-2007 12:41 AM

DDP also comes to mind as far as getting a late start goes. Granted he had his time to shine but who knows how it would've played out if it had been a bit earlier.

Stone Cold for christ sakes

The One 03-28-2007 02:06 AM

Jeritron, what's up with the hard on for Austin lately?

Also, I liked Finley in WCW much more. Which is to say I kind of liked him back then, where as now, maybe not so much.

M-A-G 03-28-2007 02:34 AM

Kurt Angle

Funky Fly 03-28-2007 03:27 AM

Flash? Bullshit. Finlay's character is perfect. He can put on good matches on a regular basis and he'd be great as a upper midcard threat, like what they do with Kane. He should be the guy that upper midcard and even main event guys are intimidated by, but not a main eventer himself.

The One 03-28-2007 03:54 AM

I don't know how much longer he is planning on working, but I could see him take on a Kane like run. Always considered scary, someone who can shift from midcard to main event with little to no build up or explination, and while I'm not a huge fan, he certainly seems like he could get over well like that with marks and fans of his...

.44 Magdalene 03-28-2007 05:06 AM

I love me some Finlay.

Vastardikai 03-29-2007 12:40 AM

Funny thing to me is that Finlay, at 49, with a bum leg, is a better worker than Much of the roster. I really think that he's in a good spot: Can work against almost anyone, regardless of style, and it be solid. If WWE had a Heel Champion at the moment, Finlay would be the guy they'd put in to "Set Up" the challenger. Hey, kind of like what happened when King Booker was World Heavyweight Champion.

He's never gonna be a top guy, but he'll probably have a front office position upon his re-retirement.

Not much, I've always found him to be a legend. It's just that lately there's been a lot of topics and discussions that have led to him. And after Rock beating him out in that poll and others, I feel the man has lost respect or something.

Stickman 03-29-2007 02:40 PM

William Regal.

Afterlife 03-29-2007 03:03 PM

If they had a 20-something Irishman -- with a truer accent-- the female crowd would love him right away. Foreign guys are hot. PLus, you get a young guy with the Leprechaun Buddy gimmick a la Hornswoggle, it'd be a great springboard onto the scene.

Unfortunately, for Finlay, he's a little past springboard time and he doesn't have too much charisma. He's a funny guy, and a straight-shootin' tweener, but there's not a whole lot of 'Here's a guy to watch'.

311 03-29-2007 06:11 PM

At first, I loved Finlay. But the more I think about it, I can't decide if he's a fantastic worker or if everyone else on the show is bad enough to make him look really, really, really good.

Pepsi Man 03-29-2007 06:43 PM

Man, too bad Doink's not a full time worker. He could be HUGE!

wwe2222 03-29-2007 11:28 PM

I enjoy anything Finlay is invovled in
