ICan someone explain to me why people love The American Dream?
 

When I see Dusty Rhodes all I see is wrestling's very own Larry The Cable Guy. Whille I see a demographic for the blue collar market style I'm not feeling it whatsoever.
He was no better of a wrestler than John Cena, his lisp and grammar makes him sound up to par with Eugene, and all he had going for him was a redneck gimmick and backstage pull.
Why did people like this guy when there are other wresters who were better talkers and better wrestlers in the industry at the time?

I have wondered this myself.

I can't explain it too well if you don't already see it, but he's got...energy. He talks with a fire and a passion that makes you feel for the guy, even if he can't speak properly. He's got an excited, emotional jump to him that makes up for his inability to wrestle a five star match. He's got that sort of spark that made the Rock great, or that makes Hogan tolerable sometimes. It seems like he really cares, like he's really there and really the character, and not just an actor in a fake sport. Hardly anybody in today's wrestling has that sort of energy, that sort of "This is where I want to be" vibe.

He's one of those people that, even if you think his speech was impared, he made you listen to what he was listening. He had charisma, and was an easy going person that knew alot about the business and lived and breathed it. I think it's more of respect, also.

He's also the only man I know who's brave enough to wrestle in a polka-dot piece of wrestling attire, which has to count for SOMETHING!!

Because looking at and listening to Dusty Rhodes makes people feel less retarded about themselves.

This is really easy to explain.

Dusty Rhodes most famous run was in the 70's and 80's in the NWA, in the south. The south was full of red neck wrestling fans, who could relate to Dusty Rhode's lifestyle. Rhodes was the staple of what most wrestling fans were back then. Just your normal everyday blue collar guy. It was like he was just another fan. His promos related to nearly everyone in the building. Just watch the Dusty Rhodes DVD and watch the faces in the crowd. You'll see the emotion in them when Dusty talked.

He wasn't the best worker, but he was the closest to the fans in their eyes. When fans have a guy that is a lot like them, they'll get behind the said character.

He was the best talker from his time, and besides for the NWA it was him or Flair, and I'll take Dusty any day of the week.

You've answered your own question. While you may not feel it, many people do. Dusty was the every man. They could look at Dusty and in some way live vicariously through him. He's was relatable, and that makes him marketable.

And they have never been many people (no more than 5,) who can talk better than Dusty. Loose Cannon hit the nail on the head though.

If the lisp is the thing that throws you about Dusty Rhodes, then does it also bother you with Ric Flair, both men have fairly prominant lisps.

Seriously, I can almost never understand Dusty. I never have a problem understanding Flair.

It's not nearly as pronounced as Dusty's but it's there he'll probably have a promo listen to him.

Anybody who thinks Dusty Rhodes can't work needs to watch his DVD and the matches contained within. He was not Shawn Michaels or Ric Flair, but he was damn good for that "old school" style.

Seriously. He cut some of the best promos I've ever seen during his time in the NWA.

He could flat out go in the ring, he was one of those guys who could go an hour every night. One of those who guys who doesn't look like he's in shape, but is.

Great cardio for anyone to get into the ring for an hour, let alone for a tubby guy.

But most of you have been helpful. Dusty just doesn't hit me as anything great. I'd take a decent Ric Flair promo over any great Dusty promo any day. Then again I've never wanted to be a common man. Hell, I've always wanted to be like Ric Flair, which isn't what Dusty stood for.

I really don't know either. I wonder why he was inducted in the Hall of Fame. I only remember him as a polka dot wearing retard.

I loved Dusty's promos from the NWA days. EXCEPT for the 'wined and dined with Kings and Queens/Pork and Beans' one. God, that was horrible. In fact, I should put that in the 'Never should have gotten over thread.'

On one hand I'm pretty excited that one of my threads was deemed bumpable, but on the other hand don't bump old threads. No one cares about this anymore.

It was his theme music. That's why everyone loved him.

Larry the goddamn Cable Guy oozes charisma also. In a nut shell The Dream was hardcore over in the south. The Dream was "Get er done" before that damn phrase came to be. Seriously, he was a redneck's wrestler, and since WCW was more over in the south he was able to connect with the moonshier's who lived below the mason dixie.

I think he's just one of those people who you like for being charismatic (from what you can make out of him talking). I know my dad likes him alot because he grew up watching him wrestle. Most of his fans probably know by now how well of a wrestler he is...

If all y'all see in Dusty Rhodes is a charismatic redneck...then y'all are just sad.

Wrestling was, and to a lesser degree is, a redneck sport. And guess what? Relating to your audience tends to get over.
