Chris Benoit not good enough to be a Main Eventer

Due to Chris Benoit’s weakness at cutting good promos, SmackDown’s head writer, Michael Hayes doesn’t feel as if Chris Benoit should be a main event performer.

Really, it pains me to say, but he's kinda right. As a heel I think he could be a top guy by just saying what needs to be said.

Of course, the irony is that Batista isn't a good enough talker to be a top guy either...then again, I guess he doesn't have the belt anymore.

Londoner 05-14-2007 07:00 PM

Cena isn't good enough either, but he is a main eventer. And Benoit would be good enough if they gave him a chance at the top as a heel I think.

JT 05-14-2007 07:01 PM

Sure the man can't make it as a main eventer. I mean there was never a case in which the biggest wrestling in pro wrestling was an amazing in-ring performer and had crappy mic skills...

M-A-G 05-14-2007 07:02 PM

He was already a main-eventer...sort of.

Jeritron 05-14-2007 07:06 PM

He won a rumble and the world title in the main event of a Wrestlemania, but he's not a main eventer.
So either they're burying a main eventer, or they gave a non-worthy main eventer the crown jewel of pushes.

XL 05-14-2007 07:07 PM

Turn him heel, give him a manager if needs must, he can Main Event, especially on SmackDown!

He main evented for around 5 months as World Champion, then pulled the plug on it. He wasn't a bad champion either in my opinion...he came off strong and I for one liked him quite a bit in the top spot.

If it works...it works, and people like Michael Hayes should start seeing what real wrestling fans want intsead of hanging around the retarded creative team all the time.

Fuck, that's a brilliant idea...wish other people saw it.

Jeritron 05-14-2007 07:17 PM

Who would be his manager? Doesn't make much sense to me to give a veteran personality a manager. Seems like the thing to do with young guys or repackaged crap that hasn't ever been over.

Nothing wrong with Cena's mic skills. They are better than average and more than once i've watched him cut an excellent promo, especially the against the odds, fighting talk or putting over the scale of a match. He's just not the world's greatest wrestler.

Except, he only had crappy mic skills back in the 80's/early 90's...and like everyone, usually improved. Then he became one of the best in the company.
Benoit hasnt done that.

Personally if it means said veteran personality gets pushed to the ME scene I'm all for it.

Heyman would be good, if they could come to terms. He has the ECW link and did wonders for Brock "I sound like a 12 Year Old" Lesnar.

Have a McMahon do it. Have Ric Flair do it.

Paul Heyman. Turn Benoit heel, send him to RAW, have him be the top guy of a small group featuring say a heel team, Ken Doane & Johnny Jeter maybe, another singles guy. Punk would be good, Orton maybe. Have 'em feud with the 'characters' (Cena, Rey could return to RAW, DX)

Remember when Shane was managing Benoit in his fued against the Rock? I'd mark out for that all over again.

If it's such a brilliant idea...where's my rep? :p

It's my birthday today so I think the lovely folk at TPWW should give me a shiny new green dot thing as a present! :D

St. Jimmy 05-14-2007 07:46 PM

Beniot is amazing in the mid-card. That's all we need to know, Too bad he's on a terrible show.

Sephiroth 05-14-2007 08:03 PM

Benoit should have the belat and Cena should be fired. mtters im drunk ahaaha

IC Champion 05-14-2007 08:24 PM

Benoit lacks what we in the business call charisma and personality.

Dorkchop 05-14-2007 08:24 PM

He's not a horrible talker, he's just bland (some will argue that's what makes you bland). Benoit could cut some decent promos if he kept things short and to the point.

Benoit has had barely any mic time throughout his career. He'd probably be a lot better today had he been on the mic more regularly.

I don't think every main eventer needs super amazing mic skills. Most do. The ones who weren't got a manager: Yokozuna, Undertaker, Lesnar, Andre. I know wrestling is a lot different than it was 10+ years ago, but a lot of people will agree that wrestling needs a couple of managers.

When he's talking, yes. In the ring I will have to disagree. I know both are related in wrestling.

YOUR Hero 05-14-2007 08:35 PM

Not to hate on HHH, but there's a guy that can't cut a promo. Just because they give him loads of mic time doesn't mean he's any good at it. It's wrestling though, so that's the way it goes.

Dorkchop 05-14-2007 10:47 PM

I've liked some of HHH's promos, others... not so much. I find he gets too much time on the mic and a lot of his promos drag on and are boring. I really like his funny promos though... when they don't drag on.

BigDaddyCool 05-14-2007 10:50 PM

Benoit sucks and can't carry the WWE because he sucks on the mic. Remeber kids, wrestling is fake and actaul wrestling ability doesn't mean a 10th as much as charisma and political pull, this is nothing new either. Quit acting shocked.

KayfabeMan 05-14-2007 10:52 PM

Benoit is absolutely good enough to be a main eventer.

He just needs a talker. I have to agree with what was said above, we do need some serious male managers - and somewhere in the world, I'm sure there are some.

Benoit does not lack either. Charisma isn't coming out with bright colours and pyro, and cutting a promo in five different decibels. It goes deeper than that. Chris Benoit has a charisma that says "Don't fucking look at me the wrong way or you're going to see my hands over your eyes as I'm pulling your neck back making you tap." That's perfectly acceptable.

Benoit also has political pull. He's one of the best wrestlers in the world, and if he threatened to go to TNA or ROH, Vince would bend over backwards to keep him. He's also one of the boys in the back that participates in ribbing and what have you. He's a locker room leader, if you will. The glass ceiling has been removed for Chris Benoit. If you haven't noticed, he's been winning like 95% of his matches. His US Title reign goes back to when he beat Mr. Kennedy for the belt at the beginning of his feud with The Undertaker.

Benoit is definitely good enough to be a main eventer. Especially now that Edge is World Heavyweight Champion. Benoit can get great matches out of Edge, and Edge can cut promos calling him Chris "Borewah" or whatever he wants to do. A male manager is not a bad idea.

I would mark out for Shane McMahon or Paul Heyman becoming Chris Benoit's manager. Either one would be sheer awesomeness.

Mr. Nerfect 05-14-2007 11:50 PM

By the way, Chris Benoit winning the 2004 Royal Rumble and World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XX are two of the best moments the WWE has had in its recent history. Seriously, no face push to since then has topped it. You'd need to go back to Stone Cold Steve Austin winning the WWE Title in 1998 to beat it.

People cared about Benoit's original push to the top. The moment he and Eddie Guerrero celebrated in the ring could have closed the book on wrestling. Of course it had to go down from there. The WWE just should have pushed Chris Benoit up again, so that he could become a staple of the show, instead of a one-time thing.

Kane Knight 05-14-2007 11:55 PM

Benoit definitely does have Charisma.

He can even cut some decent promos, though I'm not going to fellate him or anything.

Theo Dious 05-15-2007 12:03 AM

Benoit can be a great fill-in main eventer... not really a full-timer though.

Kane Knight 05-15-2007 12:09 AM

He's a great main eventer. Just not a great champion, which is where I think you were going.

Theo Dious 05-15-2007 12:11 AM

Yeah, more or less.

Theo Dious 05-15-2007 12:11 AM

Great main eventer, not a great champion, not a great candidate for "top guy."

Super V 05-15-2007 12:21 AM

What everyone else said.

They need to make him a heel and give him this silent killer persona. Maybe start off as someone's hired gun. This would've been great for his return.

Theo Dious 05-15-2007 12:23 AM

Yeah, they could call him Silent But Deadly.

Dorkchop 05-15-2007 12:31 AM

SBD! SBD! SBD! sBD!

Better Than You 05-15-2007 12:35 AM

That could work :$

Theo Dious 05-15-2007 12:41 AM

They'd have to put in a bit where he uses the sharpshooter more often, and JBL insists that he's farting on his opponent.

That's it kids, I'm out for the night, marvel at my new avatar, see you tomorrow.

FourFifty 05-15-2007 02:23 AM

Benoit not good enough for the main event?

WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!?!? Does the Wellness program apply to writers? If not, it fuckin' should!!!! If it doesn't I want to be on what ever the hell Hayes is on!

Agreed. Benoit has cut some cool promos in the past. Sure he isn't the best, but he really isn't as bad as everyone always makes him out to be. It's more about his character. He doesn't need to say much coz he's a "rabid wolverine". He does his speaking in the ring.

And imo his stuff with Orlando Jordan (making tea etc) was

Rammsteinmad 05-15-2007 02:43 AM

Besides look at Batista, Bobby Lashley and Great Khali. They're all main eventers and their all god-awful on the mic and in the ring.
