English football Query (Regarding European Qualification)

What would happen in the following instance:

Lets imagine the following in the 1/4 Finals.....

Sunderland bt Sheff Utd
Arsenal bt Pompey
Man Utd bt Fulham
Millwall bt Tranmere

The FA Cup sends one team into the UEFA Cup. Arsenal and ManU have already qualified for European competition. That means either Sunderland or Millwall would compete in the UEFA Cup.

Is that right?

Mike the Metal Ed 02-25-2004 07:39 PM

Depends on the final, I think... If Man U get drawn against Arsenal and Arsenal go to the final against say, Sunderland and win, I think Sunderland will go into Europe. (Otherwise I don't know)

The Mackem 02-25-2004 07:47 PM

I'd laugh my ass off if we indirectly qualified for Europe.

Mr. Monday Morning 02-25-2004 07:50 PM

I think (I don't know for sure) that the passing on of the UEFA spot only happens if the winner is already involved in europe next season and the loser isn't. If it was a Man U - Arsenal final then the spot would either go to a league spot (probably 6th) or be forfeit.

If Sunderland get to the final and lose against Man U or Arsenal then yeah they'll go into the UEFA next season...same thing happened to Southampton last season.

The Mackem 02-25-2004 07:55 PM

Damn looks like we'll have to go all the way to the final then :(

Anyone know any good hotels in Cardiff?

packt up 02-27-2004 02:19 AM

Yeah you have to lose in the final otherwise it gets passed onto the league me thinks.

Yeah thats what I thought too.

Its either the runner up in the final, or if both teams in the final have qualified, then the next highest placed team in the league.

Hence why Southampton went into the UEFA cup this year.

They did, they jobbed out really early

I think it was Steaua Bucharest or something like that

Wengerland 02-27-2004 12:55 PM

I think MMM was right about the qualifying ruling, but how did Man City qualify for Europe? was that on fair play or something?

The Comet Kid 02-27-2004 01:01 PM

Yep Man City got in on fair play, wonder who'll get that this year.

Wengerland 02-27-2004 01:08 PM

Ok thanks, but it depends on if England win fair play in Europe to earn another UEFA Cup spot i think.

Ok, I have a query on this. A couple of seasons ago when Liverpool beat Birmingham in the League Cup Final, even though Liverpool ahd already qualified for Europe, Blues didn't get to go into Europe.
Is this because they were a Nationwide side?

yes

The match at St Mary's was on TV and they were all singing "Are you watching Pompey Scum?" then Steaua scored and...SILENCE. Beautiful

Some "European Tour" that turned out to be. A day trip to Romania. Who good ever came out of Romania? Apart from Ganea?
have it Dazz, Mutu jobs (H)!

Lol. George Hadgi(sp?)

If it's an Arsenal vs. Man United final then the semi finalists will have to play off against each other for the UEFA spot. The UEFA cup has to have an entry from the FA Cup and it clearly won't be Arsenal or Man U.

Liverpool took the League Cup UEFA spot so the next one went to the next team down in the league. If Liverpool made the Champions League then Birmingham would have been in the UEFA cup.

I think it's one of two things. Either the transferral of the place only happens when the team has qualified for a 'more prestigious' competition (i.e. if Liverpool had qualified for the Champions League), not when they have already qualified for the same competition, or it's something to do with the FA Cup being the 'recognised' cup competition for this country - I don't know of any other country off the top of my head that has 2 cup competitions. I think the way it works is that the recognised cup competition gets a UEFA cup spot regardless, but with the League Cup it's considered a bonus or something, so if a team wins it that already has a spot it gets transferred to the league.

Something like that :-\

Sorry man.

If it helps, the only reason I know this is because it used to always happen to me in Championship Manager in the Scottish league back in the day and I emailed the UEFA because I wanted to know if that actually happened.

The Mackem 02-27-2004 04:48 PM

And they replied?

Rob 02-27-2004 05:31 PM

They did indeed.

And Dan Petrescu.

Y2Ant 02-27-2004 08:33 PM

It's bollocks how many ways you can get into Europe now

It's better with more teams in it, but the Champions League isn't really a Champions League when it has all the 2nd/3rd/4th placed teams in it :o

We did make the Champions League that season, it was when we won the treble I think. I could be wrong
UEFA CUP - Liverpool 5-4 Alaves
FA Cup- Liverpool 2 - Arsenal 1
League Cup - Beat Blues on penalties

If it was that season then it's when we came second in the league behind Arsenal.

British Beef 03-02-2004 05:38 PM

I think that the winner of the LDV Vans trophy should definately qualify for the UEFA Cup.
