Given the choice...mic work or ring work?

Poll coming. Spoilers: I choose mic work if I have to choose one. IT's worth noting I think an absolute lack of one or the other is terrible, no matter how much of one you have. Just want kind of an honest assessment as to the preference in terms of A or B.

Ring, I'm a wrestling fan.

You know, I'll go with mic because I've seen wrestlers with no mic skills and got bored, but loved people like Mick Foley who had great mic skills and just happen to be a spot monkey.

Mic Work

BTW, don't get me wrong as there have been quite a few wrestling matches in the past I've enjoyed, but wrestling is something I got for the entertainment side. I don't watch baseball, football, hockey, boxing, MMA, or etc...so I'm guessing if wrestling didn't have the mic work and the storylines, I wouldn't watch it either.

Same here. I enjoy promos and enjoy watching some wrestlers talk. But when it all comes down to it, I like to watch the wrestling itself most.

Dorkchop 06-30-2007 09:20 PM

Ring work comes first for me. It's why I watch wrestling. But at the same time I love good mic work. I would have still loved Edge and Christian had they stayed mute because I loved watching then wrestle, but their mic work was amazing... Which made love them and wrestling even more. Same goes for Angle, Austin, and other guys.

Some guys who like mainly for their mic work (Rock) and others for ring work (Benoit, Bret Hart). Rock had good charisma in the ring, but it's his mic skills before hand that got people into the matches. Benoit was never charismatic on the mic, but made up for it in the ring.

MICROPHONE.

Goddamnit, disregard one of the votes for mic work. Picked the wrong one.

Got to be ring work for me - far too little of it these days...

Russenmafia 07-01-2007 09:30 AM

ring work for me but if a wrestler is to get anywhere close to the top, he has to find a balance of good ring work and mic work. Johnny Nitro has an amazing wrestling ability but that promo on ECW this week was one of the worst I have ever heard.

mic work

apokalypse7 07-01-2007 10:31 PM

Microphone work.

to piggy back off an earlier post, Nitro's Promo proves the point. I love a good technical match, I only get behind wrestlers who can GO, but they have to have a mouthpiece. Kennedy is a prime example of average ringwork, but great mic skills. Charisma sells. Nitro will be good as is, but he can be great if he can get to an average level on the mic.....

It's possible to be one of the greats without ring work--prime example, of course, being the Rock. Ring work's pretty damn great and all, but I have to care about the wrestler before I want to watch their matches.

One of the real reasons I was wondering about this is I was wondering how out of touch the IWC is with what mainstream wrestling fans seem to enjoy.

As an added bonus, it's Hilarious seeing people who think that JBL is a great choose ring work.

Are we talking storytelling ring work, or triple flip senton ring work, or TNA style?

Storytelling i.e. (Flair, Rock, HHH, Austin) is vastily superior to spot monkeying.

Case in point: TNA fucking sucks droopy nutsack.

It's close to 50-50 for me, but Ring work edges out Mic Work for me, as I watch wrestling for wrestling...as people have stated above.

Dark-Slicer Diago 07-02-2007 06:40 PM

For me personally, I'd have to go with Ring Work.
