Zelda Ocarina of Time voted best game ever by Edge Magazine Readers
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6261546.stm
Only the top ten have been announced so far. 1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina 2. Resident Evil 4 3. Super Mario 64 4. Half Life 2 5. Super Mario World 6. Zelda: A Link to the Past 7. Halo: Combat Evolved 8. Final Fantasy XII 9. Tetris 10. Super Metroid I am surprised to see RE4 at number two. I take it this must be a massive hint for me to finally get off my ass and play the game. Really surprised Halo made it in the top 10 though. |
FF12 Is my only disagreance
What's this? No Metal Gear Solid?
What about SMB3
What the hell is Edge magazine?
Haven't plated resi 4 either, is it really that good??
I think i agree though, ocarina was/is a pretty awesome game. |
Edge is a really well respected multi platform magazine.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaan, need to pull my n64 out and play ocarina of time. Until I find a job, I have the whole summer to waste.
Thats the only the top 10, the poll was for best top 100 games.
I think the fact they started with the number one game shows how stupid the magazine is. Obviously start from 100 and work your way down. Keeps readers interested in what will place the top. Because of that, this list is stupid.
I'd probably get rid of FFXII and Halo and replace them with Shenmue and Twighlight Princess myself. But thats just me. Maybe Super Metroid for Rez, but that would be touch and go.
Super Mario Bros 3, COME ON
Super Mario 64 was a great game, but NOT better than Mario 3. Same with SMW.
SMB3 > SMW > Mario 64 I'd probably switch out Half-Life 2 for Res 4 and put Mario 3 in Res 4's place. |
FFXII is amazing you cunts.
I think this almost beats the last "worst list ever" comment I made.
The problem with lists like these, is that nerds get pissed when their favorite games don't make it. But, you can't please everyone.
Super Mario Bros 3 probably should be at least in the top 10. Maybe number 2, or even 1. I don't know. |
How the hell does Half-Life 2 get anywhere near the top ten? I mean, seriously. I've played it, it's not THAT great. Most of it's mods are a shitload better than it. Maybe top 100 of all time, possibly in the top 50, but it's no where near the top ten.
See, I don't get everyone's fixation with SMB3. Trust me, I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuge NES fan and I played the shit out of the game, and I agree it's good. But I mean, it's not even the best 2D platformer out there, let alone the best Super Mario ____ game. Super Mario World is better, and even then Yoshi's Island has every other one beat. I understand nostalgia has a part in all of it but come on. I was playing SMB like last night, levels are ridiculously short. Like you can beat most of the levels in under 20 seconds, kinda silly.
In relation to the time frame in which it came out, it was quite innovative. Not to my knowledge have you ever had such an array of power-ups, hidden secrets, levels and variety in those levels before Super Mario 3.
The fact that you can go back and still have FUN and not have to work 60+ hours to beat the damn thing while it still seems something of a small epic just adds to that. And it really hasn't aged much. The graphics are great for the system and, again, is quite fun while still being relatively simple. |
No no I get that entirely, and I agree if the list was like "Top 100 most innovative games of all time" or something, it'd be right up there with Mario 64 and Doom and all those other games that pretty much laid groundwork for their respective genres. And yeah it is def still fun to play now, but I mean it's just so easy by other standards, like I find a ton more enjoyment playing Yoshi's Island over SMB3. For it's time it was amazing, but then so was YI, and I think it stands the test of time better.
If we were going by your standards no NES game could ever make the cut except POSSIBLY the original Legend of Zelda.
I'll agree that YI withstood the test of time, but if someone is making a "Best Games of All Time", you can't really compare the games to each other from different generations. You have to look within those generations and see what they did to innovate for it's time then compare that to the other games from other generations relative to their fun factor, innovation, graphics, etc of games in their own generation. Otherwise you'd have mostly PS2/XBox era-on titles. |
Is that really such a bad thing though? I mean, they ARE better games, so why should they be disqualified just because they came out later? They improved upon the groundwork that earlier games gave them, and they're just simply... better. Like SMB was ridiculous for its time for definite, but because of the enhancements to the genre it brought to the table, all future platformers are now going to incorporate those ideas and build upon them, getting bigger and better.
I know what you're saying and I don't necessarily disagree with you, I just think that the successive evolution of games is a great thing, and yeah I definitely have nostalgia for a ton of older games, but I also respect what they have done in terms of making current games better. Maybe I'm just too used to PC games, and I treat older console games as beta versions, or unpatched versions, of a game that should be played right now, or something. |
What I don't understand is the amount of Nintendo titles that are on all these lists. Is all of America just a bunch of Nintendo Fanboys or something?
lmao there are at least 5 Final Fantasies better than 12
No there's not. I'd say 3, tops.
There is no way on Earth FFXII belongs on that list.
Halo and FF12 I don't agree with, and I'd probably put Super Mario World and Super Metroid above Half Life 2.
I can't respect a list that has FF12 rated better then FFVII
Agreed. I would take FF7-10 over 12. The rest I agree with. I would put Halo 2 over Halo 1. Cant really argue the other ones.

Personally I think that SMW is better than Mario 3
I can't really complain that much about that list. I do think that Metal Gear should be in there as should GTA 3. But you can't please everyone |
SMW > SM64 > SM3
FACT! |
Resident evil 4 is great!

RE4 is different game play to it's parents, I feel that RE1 was the trend setter that got the ball rolling |

Plus the fact that the other system(s) of that generation (mainly from Sega) weren't pushed as hard here. |
Mike Tysons Punchout.
Seriously though I'd think Goldeneye would be on the list. |
Hmm, yeah Goldeneye is a pretty shocking omission actually.
Not to be a complaining nerd, but I thought there were too many "new" games on that list. I understand that a lot of games these days are amazing, but so were a lot of games in their day. Goldeneye was pretty damn amazing in its day. Was Super Mario Bros 3 even on that list?
I guess I agree with Ocarina of Time making number one. I've never played it, but I watched a lot of it back in 98/99 and it was fun to watch. |
Still, horrible list.
