So, Best British Sitcom?

We quite rightly didn't include them in the thread similar to this - but what do you - UK-based or otherwise - consider the UK's best Sitcom?

Another 'Only Fools' victory, perhchance?

Blitz 07-07-2007 03:52 PM

If The Office counts, then that.

Rob 07-07-2007 07:55 PM

Fools and Horses. Game On was great too.

G 07-07-2007 10:06 PM

uk office is over rated

but it's still lol though

Boondock Saint 07-07-2007 10:24 PM

I've only seen The Office, Coupling, and Chef. A few episodes from other stuff like Are You Being Served and AbFab...

And I've seen Extras if you'd count that.

Out of those I'd go with The Office.

NoJabbaNoBogRoll 07-07-2007 11:15 PM

Office is a huge steaming pile of shit.

I'd go with Blackadder or Father Ted, probably.

Downunder 07-08-2007 12:32 AM

Only Fools and Horses was awesome, Blackadder had a couple of fantastic series, The Royel Family is worth a mention.

Faulty Towers takes the cake.

diothoir 07-08-2007 02:01 AM

It's Father Ted blatently.

Honourable mentions to Blackadder and Red Dwarf.

Skippord 07-08-2007 03:33 AM

Fawlty Towers

True Brit Grit 07-08-2007 05:17 AM

Agreed Blackadder was quality. One Foot in the Grave?

Mr Regal 07-08-2007 02:21 PM

Only Fools and horses is pretty special.

Red Dwarf is awesome.

Wouldn't count the Office as a sitcom.....I don't think....or do I?.....I haven't thought this through properly, I shall return with a better answer.

Or not!

Arnold HamNegger 07-09-2007 04:20 PM

Not sure about the current shows, but I used to love "The Young Ones."

CSL 07-09-2007 04:30 PM

For me, Fawlty Towers and The Office by a long way, followed by Only Fools.

Dave Youell 07-10-2007 07:30 AM

PEEP SHOW YOU STUPID FUCKS!

ct2k 07-10-2007 07:39 AM

In the era of 6 episode seasons its gotta be Pheonix Nights or the Royle Family, in terms of long running its gotta be Fools and Horses

Nowhere Man 07-11-2007 02:18 PM

"I've got an idea! And it's as hot as my pants!"

Gotta go with Blackadder

Peep Show is totally tits.

Can't go wrong with the classics like Fawlty Towers and Blackadder.

Bottom is incredible too.

I still think the background line in Pheonix Nights on the tv in the club along the lines of "Crime Time coming up right after 'An Evening With Jockey Wilson' " is one of the greatest things ever written

Outsider 07-16-2007 06:57 AM

Red Dwarf or Blackadder.

I used to think Coupling was great, then I watched an episode a few weeks ago and it just seemed so slow and predicitble.

The Office was alright, but a tad :meh: in places. Never really got why Only Fools is so hyped either.

If Peep Show can just create a couple more series like the last one, then I think it will be remembered as one of the greatest ever.

Blitz 12-07-2007 12:04 AM

Just watched the first episode of Father Ted and it is pretty hot.

Corporate CockSnogger 12-07-2007 02:45 AM

Father ted by a long shot in my opinion. Also I'd give Vicar of Dibley a decent mention.

JT 12-07-2007 10:26 AM

Blackadder is definately my favorite.

I like Are You Being Served as a kid, and want to catch a few of the newer series (whats the one with the guys from Shawn of the Dead?)

Mr Regal 12-07-2007 12:42 PM

PEEP SHOW YOU STUPID FUCKS

Oh and i sex over The Mighty Boosh....I feel that is an aquired taste though.

ct2k 12-07-2007 12:52 PM

I'm still to be convinced by Mighty Boosh, seems like ponsey southern dross to me

Mr Regal 12-07-2007 02:36 PM

Howard Moon is northern sir. It's probably a bit too left field for the likes of you, the sweaty vodka and coke drinking scouse maggot that you are.

Lord-Of-Darkness 12-10-2007 11:17 AM

Peep Show, Black Books, or The IT Crowd. Its tough.

Mr Regal 12-10-2007 03:47 PM

The IT crowd doesn't even deserve a mention. Best ever....come on, it's not even the best on at that time of night.

OssMan 12-10-2007 04:10 PM

I dunno I saw Extras once or twice and it was kinda hilarious.

Mr Regal 12-10-2007 04:15 PM

Extras is hilarious.

Matter of opinon I guess. I just bought Series 1 and 2 on DVD, I love the show.

Mr Regal 12-11-2007 02:00 PM

You sadist.

Rammsteinmad 12-13-2007 05:00 PM

The IT Crowd - I've never laughed so much in my life. This show is amazing.
The Mighty Boosh - The shows are a bit hit-or-miss, but the live show is brilliant.

Also The Day Today. Chris Morris and Steve Coogan are awesome.

Not really a situation comedy though

But when Morris when C4 and all out, nothing and i mean NOTHING beats Brass Eye

That Pedo episode was amazing, all the outrage just made me love it even more

NeanderCarl 01-15-2008 11:01 AM

There have been some amazing UK sitcoms, so it is hard to choose but on a scale of quality vs longevity, Only Fools and Horses wins out.

Perfect blend of brilliant comic situations, inspired writing, tremendous characters, superb performances (especially from David Jason as Del Trotter), strong supporting characters, great on-screen chemistry, witty banter and the right blend of drama and pathos at exactly the right time... nothing can touch it on the whole. The only slight negative is that the most recent trilogy, the shows finale (filmed in 2001, but aired on Christmas day over a three year period until 2003), seemed a bit dated as though writer John Sullivan had lost touch in the time it had been off-air.

Still, a timeless classic.

WestNZ 01-17-2008 01:03 AM

Blackadder by a long shot

Blackadder? Series 2 and 4 were brilliant, but 3 was weak and 1 was fucking piss poor. How could that be the best British sitcom ever, when it is so inconsistant?

I'm not arguing with your opinion if it was your favourite ever, but you'd be hard pressed to say it's the best "by a long shot".

Y2Ant 01-21-2008 01:22 PM

Bottom and Father Ted.

Y2Ant 01-21-2008 01:23 PM

and The Young Ones.

and The Thin Blue Line, because Rowan Atkinson (well the whole cast really) are amazing.
