Red Wings acquire Lang

TSN.ca Staff

2/27/2004

The Red Wings have done it again. TSN has learned that Detroit has acquired centre Robert Lang from the Washington Capitals for Tomas Fleischmann, a first round pick in 2004 and a fourth round pick in 2006.

Lang is tied for the league lead in scoring with 74 points (29 goals, 45 assists). In eleven NHL seasons, Lang has played in 640 games, tallied 173 goals and dished out 289 assists.

Lang has been in Washington the past two seasons and spent nearly four seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has also spent time with the Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings.

The 19-year-old Fleischmann is among the WHL's leading scorers, with 28 goals and 69 points in 53 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors this season.

samichna 02-27-2004 02:19 PM

Holy shit.

road doggy dogg 02-27-2004 02:34 PM

LOL yeah just read that on TSN. Doesn't really make sense IMO, since Detroit is pretty good at center as is. But eh, I guess you can't really pass up a deal like that. :o

MoRcHeEbA 02-27-2004 02:44 PM

it's a good deal for the redwings gonna make them even better, but they gave up alot of future to get him.

Yashamaga 02-27-2004 03:32 PM

Well his point production is going to be stunted now because he's probably playing on the 3rd line. Kovalev would have been a better player for them to get.

And the price was pretty steep.

Adder 02-27-2004 04:39 PM

No his scoring will most likely soar. Because now the oppositions main checker won't be focused primarily on him. And 3rd liner I doubt he'll be.

road doggy dogg 02-27-2004 04:55 PM

LOL yeah, Adder's right. Silly Yash.

They did give up quite a bit for him. Good on Washington for actually getting a decent return on a player this time.

RoXer 02-27-2004 05:25 PM

WTF? This EXACT trade happened in my Dynasty mode in NHL 2004 like a few weeks ago. Talk about realism....(Coyotes are 60-15 :shifty: )

Y2Ant 02-27-2004 08:37 PM

Imagine if they still had Fedorov too :o

He (Gonchar) says he would like to be a Maple Leaf but no formal request has been made yet.

BCWWF 02-28-2004 01:00 AM

They gave up a lot of future? Didn't that thing say he was only 19 years old? :wtf:

road doggy dogg 02-28-2004 01:05 AM

Well obviously. Guys like that are a future of your team. Giving up say, Yzerman, wouldn't affect your team in the long-run now, would it?

they gave away a first and fourth round pick as well meaning they could have just given away the next wayne gretzky

BlackRavyyn 02-28-2004 01:48 AM

That's true Cheebs, but if Lang is still young then the Wings didn't give up much.

Lang is proven talent for now, and they know that Yzerman is running out of time and some of their other players are out of time too. Instead of spending money on unproven talent, they went out and got someone who is proven talent...a bold move :y:

Now if only Edmonton could do that :'(

He'll be behind Datsyuk and Yzerman. that means less ice time and less scoring chances.

and no rdd, Yzerman will be a red wing for life. He's the greatest captain in the history of the game and he's worshipped in Detroit.

YOUR Hero 02-28-2004 01:06 PM

Yes Yash Yzerman is a Red Wing for life, but his hockey life on the ice is just about done ( :'( ) And Lang is the leagues leading scorer, you don't acquire the leagues leading scorer and put him on the third line. That will be Yzerman. His scoring will continue at or higher then it is already. After losing Jarg, after losing Bndra, having Gonchar out for such a long time, he continued to pace the league. He's for real.

Yashamaga 02-28-2004 01:17 PM

I agree that he should be on the top lines but you cannot split their #1 line right now (Datsyuk and Hull) and because of who Yzerman is, he might be on the 2nd. He'll (lang)probably be on the 2nd though with Yzer switching to the wing.

da_king 02-28-2004 01:49 PM

the thing that matters though is the playoffs, for which i don't consider lang to be a proven performer in. still though they've upgraded their team from what they had and added more then just depth. there's a lot of grumblings here in vancouver about the need to make a deal to take us to the next level, especially considering that detroit, colarado and nashville have made deals to improve their teams heading into the playoffs. if the canucks gm doesn't end up doing anything, there's gonna be a lot of pissed off fans.

MoRcHeEbA 02-28-2004 01:50 PM

you're an idiot yash they've already said they're gonna put Hull on the second line and he's said he has no problem. You don't aquire a guy that's tied for the league in points just to put him on a second or third line. That would be like the bruins aquiring naslund then putting him on there checking line.

Yashamaga 02-28-2004 02:31 PM

naslund's a gay

YOUR Hero 02-28-2004 02:42 PM

Burke's inactions in Vancouver are going to cost him his job.

Who knows what the future holds for the NHL, this may be the Canucks last great chance to do something.

road doggy dogg 02-28-2004 03:07 PM

Oh my God you are ****ing thick.

I was using Yzerman strictly as an example, because he is OLD and near the END OF HIS CAREER. Jesus ****.

Okay, if I said Chelios instead, would that be better?? ****ing retard.

And yes, Lang will get priority over Datsyuk. Lang > Datsyuk. Lang > Zetterberg. Lang > about 80% of their team right now. He WILL play on one of their scoring lines, so just shut up and stop trying to act like you know how anything works.

KleptoKlown 02-28-2004 03:19 PM

how can anyone think that the wings would put the NHLs best points producers as of right now(tied) on the 3rd line? You'd have to be a ****ing moron to think that...this is the Red Wings, not the Rangers.

Yashamaga 02-28-2004 03:20 PM

LOL

you've been watching hockey for a year and your trying to tell me anything about the game? haha

if you were using him as an example, you picked a shithouse example

go back to cheering for St. Louis, if you even know what team he plays for

KleptoKlown 02-28-2004 03:22 PM

it just so happens that st louis is the guy that is tied with lang....

its funny that you mention how rdd has only been watching for a year...its even funnier that he's knows more about hockey than you, despite you watching for years.

Yashamaga 02-28-2004 03:23 PM

shut the hell up

I was just saying that they won't split up Dats and Hull. It doesn't matter if he's on the 1st or the 2nd line, it matters who he plays with

road doggy dogg 02-28-2004 03:24 PM

Hey wow guess what? Move Datsyuk to LW. HOLY SHIT PROBLEM SOLVED

road doggy dogg 02-28-2004 03:25 PM

It's sad that someone who's only been seriously watching the game for a year (me) still makes you look stupid when you try and say stupid things like "Naslund's gay" and "Lang will play on their third line"

Sammy-Joe-Muzz

Yashamaga 02-28-2004 03:28 PM

so just because I don't like Naslund, i'm a moron?

that's a good solid foundation

road doggy dogg 02-28-2004 03:29 PM

Okay, thanks for just totally killing your own argument.

its also because you seem to think st louis and lang suck because they're not as well known as someone like Thorton.

Its funny that you think the 3 top point producers right now suck...I didnt know scoring goals ment players suck. Thanks for correcting my errors

what the hell are you a Maple leafs fan :foc: Burke has easily been one of the best GM's over the last few years. He has let his talent devlop he's traded for good players. He's got one of the best coaches in the game. If the canucks don't resign him they are really gonna be giving up someone special to the team. He puts them first and I hope they re-sign him. I heard he might go to boston or the islanders next year though :(

MoRcHeEbA 02-28-2004 03:50 PM

it's gonna be funny when boston doesn't trade Glen Murray, Mike Knuble, Brian Rolston, Dan McGillis and Sean O'Donnell. by the deadline then they're just gonna leave boston cause they're to cheap to re-sign any of them
