Good music mixing and recording software?

I need some very easy to use software for recording and mixing guitar, bass, and drum tracks. I tried CoolEdit before, but was too stupid to figure it out. For anybody who is experienced with putting together their own music, what is some good, free, easy to use software for mixing and recording? Preferably with step by step directions too.

Cool Edit without a doubt. Get the latest version if you can. CEP 2000 is kinda subpar, can't lay down multiple tracks at once.

the thing that sucks about Cool Edit is that it only reads wav files

I use Cakewalk, mostly because it was recommended to me by a professional musician. He also demonstrated it to me in his studio, so I use it for that reason (I already have a feel for it).

However, it's mad expensive (Or you can get it cracked if you don't mind doing that sorta thing).

I use Cool Edit Pro for mine.
