Tag Rope

When did this start? The little white rope attached to the top turnbuckle, which apparently people are supposed to hold whenever they aren't in the ring during a tag match in WWE.

It's just bothered me for a while.

I have no idea when it started, 80's at least, probably way before that. They took it away during the Attitude Era and brought it back a few years ago.

I was at a house show a few years ago. Regal & Eugene vs La Restiance.

The ref told Eugene a few times he needed to hold onto the tag rope. Eugene took the tag rope off the turnbuckle, and ran into the ring with it. Thoughtit was cool because he still had the tag rope.

I remember one event, Jesse Ventura was the ref or something and he untied the tag ropes and moved them to the other corners. I never understood why.

Summerslam 1988. He was only stalling for time since everyone thought Ted DiBiase paid him off.

Yeah, they stopped using tag ropes for quite a few years. When they started mentioning them a couple of years ago, I did a double take.

Xero 07-25-2007 06:30 PM

I want to say the first time they came back on TV was in a La Resistance match.

Jordan 07-25-2007 07:57 PM

I think its a good idea that they use them nowadays.

Xero 07-25-2007 07:59 PM

Especially now that the refs are supposed to 'actually enforce' the rules.

Outsider 07-26-2007 08:58 AM

Bring back time limits. WCW did that towards the end of it's tenture and it worked quite well. Just gave another possible ending to a match.

Kane Knight 07-27-2007 12:25 PM

TNA tried it. Did they ever do anything good with it?

Mooияakeя™ 07-27-2007 12:53 PM

I like this return to the old skool tag ropey thing.

Always good for the heels too. They can use it to strangle people and when they do stuff behind the ref's back, they hold it up and point to it in a "nah, did nothing ref, I was holding this all the time". which gets mini-heat and makes me chuckle.

I still want the bell ringing to come back when a beat down is going on. That always made me crack up.

HeartBreakMan2k 07-27-2007 01:53 PM

I love the tag rope idea.

Kane Knight 07-27-2007 03:20 PM

Yeah, I loved it when they'd keep ringing the bell. It was like, "What? You think the only reason he's still going is that he's deaf or something?"

HeartBreakMan2k 07-28-2007 12:57 AM

:D

Those subtle stupid fucking things were great.

I rememeber the Attitude Era, "The following contest is schelualed for the TV time remaining"

The MAC 07-28-2007 02:52 PM

I used to love the WCW cliff hangers at the end of tv time. I remember BRet hart runing to the ring with a chair..and people wonderig if he was gonna hit hogan or sting.. and he pulled back the chair to swing ...and it was over.. Who the fuck did he hit? wait seven days to find out.

Xero 07-28-2007 05:05 PM

*John Cena runs into a ring of 50 people all gunning for him*

JR: BAHGAWD! WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN HERE!?

*Fade to black*

*Next week*

JR: Guess who FU'd 50 people?

Kane Knight 07-28-2007 05:47 PM

I loved those things. They were hilarious sometimes. But they were cliffhangers and they usually kept people interested.

Something they'd fail to do for the reason given by Xero.
