NBC has announced that it will be reviving the popular competition series “American Gladiators” for midseason.

According to Variety, the show, which pitted featured players like Nitro, Turbo and Laser against amateur athletes in David vs. Goliath-type battles during its syndication run in the early ’90s, will be updated for the 21st century with new technology and twists.

The latest incarnation will follow eight gladiators — four men and four women — as they take on both male and female contestants. This time around, the participants will actually be given the chance to train for the various physical strength and endurance matches.

While NBC wouldn’t confirm how many episodes have been ordered, at least six are being prepped, with producers scouting for gladiators, hosts and contestants.

In all honesty, despite nostalgia getting me all giddy, I have my doubts about it. Maybe if the competition's made to be a bit like Ninja Warrior or something, but most of the old games were pretty corny.

It was cult classic for the entire 7 years it was on.

They are playing all the seasons on ESPN Classic now. Although they didn't show an episode tonight (because they wanted to show that little league WS thing on it, for some reason), they should be into the 5th season now (when they changed the theme and got that one woman to co host), unless they do what Spike did when they ran it (skipped seasons 5 and 6 and go straight into season 7 with no reason). Highly doubtful, since they showed season 1 (another season Spike skipped).

And KK, if the show goes the way that it was back when it first aired, then it'll do well. But if they decide to make it like Battle Dome ended up becoming, then it'll fail miserably. Hope they do the former, because AG never was made out to be Battle Dome (thank GOD).

I'm going to be honest...I enjoyed it.

They just messed up Assault, which happens to be my favorite game.

I enjoyed it...the first episode was better than the 2nd.

The Eliminator is horrible now...the thing I loved most about the old one was the part at the end where they run through the paper wall into a gladiator...and they got rid of that.

Apparently it was a huge ratings draw. It was the highest rated debut of a show. Bumping out Heroes...

I was kind of disappointed that all the challenges were old. Come up with new ideas.

I think it's an excellent show.

I think it was pretty unreal to be honest.

I enjoyed it, except for the following things:

- They REALLY need to fix Assault, and Hang Tough needs to be a LITTLE bit longer.
- PLEASE get rid of Hogan, because he really doesn't know too much of what he's talking about. Mike Adamle was THE AG voice, and rumor had it that he really wanted to come back. Ali is cool, though (didn't think she'd do that well).
- We're doing this "go straight into the semifinals" thing that was one of the killers during the last two seasons of the first AG, though it seems they are qualifying based on pure Eliminator times alone rather than also using overall point totals.
- Right now, we don't have a real breakout contender that gives the glads trouble and that the crowd can really get behind (AG fans like me remember Wesley Berry from season 5 that excelled at a LOT of the events...and just KILLED the Gauntlet).
- Umm...Hit & Run is NOT a BRAND new game. It was played for YEARS in the UK and was a popular event.

Other than that, I enjoyed it. From what I heard, as well, the ratings actually were really good for Sunday and went up as the night progressed (they might suck for Monday because of the BCS game running away with everything). If it goes on for a second season (which it could actually do), I wouldn't mind them bringing back a few other games (Whiplash) or importing a few other games from the UK (GIVE US POLEAXE!!).

i was thinking "what's the point" then i remembered, writers strike. as for gladiators, thought it was cool when i was like 9 but now i couldn't give a shit. bill hicks had it right.
