Can they test for this sort brain damage when your alive or is it a type of examination that can only be done once someone is deceased? Or are there other ways to detect this type of damage?

I don't know:?:

scarring. burst blood vessels, tumours are all physical signs of damage that can show up. If its a chemical imbalance there will be elevated levels of the chemicals.

They could scan his brain while he was still alive, yes.
