Who was behind Sean O'Haire's devil's advocate gimmick?

This could probably go in the Q&A, but feel free to make this a discussion about the sheer awesomeness of Sean O'Haire (when he's not getting owned or making a fool of himself outside professional wrestling).

Anyway, I just watched those Sean O'Haire vignettes, and they honestly gave me goosebumps. It was great stuff, and it just occurred to me that I have no clue who was behind it. I'm thinking Paul Heyman might have had something to do with it, but who knows?

Those segments were terribly overrated.

Maybe so, but overrated doesn't mean bad. They blow anything the WWE currently has going out of the water (character-wise).

Shadow 10-16-2007 09:42 PM

O'Haire had a hard on for Spanky and stalked him in Japan.

Throwing feces for two hours on the air would do so as well.

...But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. :D

Tb1 10-16-2007 10:28 PM

Anyone have some of those videos? I've only found 2 on drugs and religion.

Tb1 10-16-2007 10:29 PM

And BTW, I though it was pretty golden.

Nark Order 10-17-2007 12:21 AM

Not overrated at all in my opinion. It was a build-up for a character that was actually done right for once. Too bad they destroyed it quickly afterwards...

thedamndest 10-17-2007 12:35 AM

I think maybe pairing him up with fat Roddy Piper didn't do much to help.

FourFifty 10-17-2007 12:35 AM

If nothing else, I have the text.

1) Cheating on your Wife

1/13/03 (Raw)

Go ahead. Do it.
[needs]
You have sexual needs, desires.
[desires]
You want to. You need to. Do it for you.
[indulge]
When was the last time you did something for you?
[physical]
We all know its just a physical thing. Its not like you’re going to leave your wife.
Look at it this way: it’ll make your relationship stronger in the end.
[bliss]
What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.
You’ll appreciate your wife more.
[appreciation]
If you play your cards right, you might even learn a few things.
[A+]
And believe me: your wife will thank you later.
[thanks]

I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.
[sean o’haire]

2)Don’t go to Church

1/19/03 (Sunday, Royal Rumble) & repeated 1/20/03 (Raw)

Stop the prayers. Hit the snooze.
You’ll go next week.
[escape]
Hell, don’t even go at all.
[everywhere?]
If God is everywhere, why should we go to church?
If he’s sitting right next to you on the couch …
Who even knows if there is a God, anyway.
[realize]
The church is nothing but a farce. A way to judge you.
[evaluate]
You have to take control of your own life. You are your only judge.
[decide]
Save yourself the headache.
Do something more valuable with your time.
[absolved]
And if there is a god, he’ll forgive you.

Hey, I’m not telling you anything that you don’t already know.
[sean o’haire]

3) Why pay Taxes?

1/23/03 (SmackDown)

You are nothing but a slave to the government.
They’re stealing your money, your hard earned money.
[liberty]
So why do you even need to pay taxes? They’re nothing but a scam.
[freedom]
And who’s going to know? Do you think the IRS has time to go after a little guy like you? They’re way too busy the big fish.
Besides, paying taxes in un-American.
[patriotism]
Remember what your forefathers said: “No taxation without representation.”
And right now your elected officials are not doing a very good job of representing you.
[democracy]
What has the government done for you?
Think about it … who needs your money more ?
[prosperity]
You or filthy rich Uncle Sam?

Hey, I’m not telling you anything that you don’t already know.
[sean o’haire]

4) Little Vices

1/27/03 (Raw) & repeated 1/30/03 (SmackDown)

Everyone has a vice.
Sometimes you just need to take a step back from reality.
[reward]
You work hard. You deserve to enjoy your life.
[release]
Take a drink. have a smoke.
So you spend some time away from your family.
Your parents weren’t there all the time.
[independence]
You turned out all right, didn’t you? Exactly.
Don’t feel bad.
This is what people do.
[happiness]
So go ahead … tip one back. Light one up.

Hell, I’m not telling you anything that you don’t already know.
[sean o’haire]

Mr. Nerfect 10-17-2007 07:49 AM

He looks so much like Batista, in my opinion. This could guy could have been something. Is he still looking as horrible as he once did?

HeartBreakMan2k 10-17-2007 09:32 AM

Not only could he have been something - he should have been huge. The guys was big, had the look, the charisma and the apparent ability to work a promo, he could go in the ring and he had the gimmick guys would die for... and then they paired him up with the hot rod :(

Outsider 10-17-2007 10:23 AM

Lets not forgot the best looking swaton around.

Hanso Amore 10-17-2007 10:40 AM

He is the WWE's Bo Jackson.

Could have been huge, started out great, but circumstances beyond his control ended it.

hb2k 10-17-2007 05:39 PM

Very good vignettes. But lets not forget how the quality of production helped shape it, and how the character outside these videos didn't have much to it.

XL 10-17-2007 06:45 PM

I really liked O'Haire. Was pissed when they threw him in with Piper.

Mr. Nerfect 10-18-2007 06:16 AM

I think it would be nice if he came back as either Theodore Long or Vickie's Assistant General Manager. The Long vs. Guerrero angle would actually be good if it put someone like him over as a master manipulator.

RP 10-19-2007 05:25 AM

I'm pretty sure he got knocked out by a bartender a couple a months ago.

Mister Sinister 10-19-2007 05:45 AM

On April 6, 2007, O'Haire suffered serious injuries in a fight that took place outside a bar in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. O'Haire suffered a fractured orbital bone (in three places) as well as other fractures to his face and skull. Vision in his left eye is impaired, possibly permanently, and he may require extensive plastic surgery. Conflicting versions of the incident were reported with O'Haire claiming he was coming to the aid of a friend, but other witnesses saying O'Haire tried to start a fight with his alleged assailant, Juan Brantley. Previously, on March 17, Brantley had filed a complaint with the sheriff's office stating that O'Haire had attempted to start a fight with him at another bar.

BigDaddyCool 10-19-2007 11:19 AM

Who cares? 'Noid, why do you have a hard of for such bland wrestlers?

CYCLOPTERSAURUS 10-19-2007 10:02 PM

Those really were some of the best, most interesting promos WWE has produced. It's true - he was big, had a good look, had talent, and apparently decent mic skills. These things aren't especially rare, but a gimmick that is interesting is.

It really was a good gimmick, but SURPRISE! The writers didn't know what to do with it, or him. Apparently, anything that demands any sort of thought at all has no place in WWE programming. hb2k is right - once the promos were over, the writers were just lost - The only thing I remember him doing outside the promos, using that gimmick, was making Brian Kendrick run around the stadium naked.

Rammsteinmad 10-20-2007 06:39 AM

O'Haire is still one of my top ten wrestlers of all time. And that's from his WCW and little WWE material. I'm pretty much saying what others have already said in this thread, but he had the size, the look, charisma AND he could put on awesome matches. His Seanton Bomb was awesome as was his cool kicks and martial arts moves.

Stupid WWE. :nono:
