Updated no-mercy coming for the wii?

We'll leave you with two last tidbits. One, THQ's WWF: No Mercy for the Nintendo 64 is coming back via the WiiWare service with completely updated rosters. Two, the lackluster performance of Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't deterred Sega; they're already hard at work at another "real" Sonic game. 2D, please!

Pinch of salt

Blitz 11-09-2007 11:45 PM

That might be enough to make me buy a Wii.

Vietnamese Crippler 11-09-2007 11:47 PM

If that happened, I think I'd stop playing anything else (besides Brawl).

U-Warrior 11-10-2007 12:40 AM

They would have to change a lot more than the roster.

Dorkchop 11-10-2007 01:31 AM

Yeah, I posted this in the "WTF happen to THQ and Wrestling games" thread, but this rumor deserves its own thread.

So far this is only a rumor, so I'm not getting my hopes up, but if it's true, holy shit.

Xero 11-10-2007 12:28 PM

This would mean all new arenas too I would assume, and higher-rez textures.

They could probably get away with selling it as a cheap Wii game if they updated it enough.

This is one of the interesting bits about Wii Ware.

Shaggy 11-10-2007 01:17 PM

I was thinking of picking one up this weekend for Mario....if this is released then that will just further my happiness in picking one up....

The Genius 11-10-2007 03:05 PM

i too would get a wii if this happens.

Kane Knight 11-10-2007 03:57 PM

The only reason I could see this not happening is that it'll surely pull attention away from the neutered Smackdown vs Raw coming out.

G 11-11-2007 11:44 AM

Did they ever fix that lag issue with No Mercy?

Xero 11-11-2007 11:51 AM

What lag issue?

G 11-11-2007 11:56 AM

Back on the 64 whenever there were 4 people in the ring it would lag like a bitch.

Xero 11-11-2007 12:04 PM

Huh. I don't remember much lag. Maybe a spike here or there but it wasn't bad at all.

Dorkchop 11-11-2007 12:50 PM

The tag team ladder match was a little slower than a normal one on one match, but that was to be expected on the N64 and it wasn't that slow anyway.

I seriously hope this is true.

Xero 11-11-2007 12:56 PM

Oh yeah. That was really the only place where I noticed the lag. Otherwise it was okay.

No...no they dont.

JT 11-11-2007 01:25 PM

Strangely I liked the lag. It would throw timing off in the 4 way and Tripple Threat matches, making it more interesting.

Honestly, I'm taking this as a rumor right now, but it would be awesome if it happen. Might even convince me to find one of those N64 to GC adapters.

Also...online play would be awesome.

DS 11-11-2007 02:17 PM

I don't know, I'd much rather have the old roster than anything from today. They should update the game itself and leave the roster alone.

Not gonna happen.

Seriously.

But on the plus side, No Mercy was 100% editable. The only thing missing will be themes. Could be much worse.

Xero 11-11-2007 04:07 PM

I bet they'll lock out editing appearances of the main wrestlers if they release it.

DAMN iNATOR 11-11-2007 04:22 PM

Not if they know what's good for them. Otherwise it will probably end up with very few sales.

Xero 11-11-2007 04:46 PM

Right, because that was the ONLY reason anyone EVER played. They changed their appearance like "Barbie: The Game"...

I somehow doubt they will do that.

Also, I'll throw a markish tantrum if they do.

But I disagree with DN's notion that it won't sell well without editable rosters. It may lose some sales, but I doubt many.

Savio 11-11-2007 07:17 PM

Maybe they'll get rid of the glitch that got rid of all your shit randomly.

Naw. You'll need to download the WiiWare Game Genie.

I have to admit, the first time I read this, I could've sworn to GOD you said that NM was 100% EDIABLE!!

Don't ask...long day.

They did fix that on the new cartridges after it was discovered. If only Namco had done the same with Soul Calibur 3.

What Would Kevin Do? 11-12-2007 04:20 AM

No Mercy wasn't 100 % editable... Just appearances. You were stuck with the moves the gave you.

Loose Cannon 11-12-2007 09:31 AM

this would be pretty cool.

Dave Youell 11-13-2007 08:48 AM

When they say updated roster…

Personally I would love it if they kept the old roster and added in the new talent and/or updated the old talent, that roster would be huge!

I’m confused with how the licensing works for the new stuff though, I would assume something would have to be paid to Vince to make this happen, so I wouldn’t expect this to be very cheap. But if they overhauled the graphics, kept the game play and tweaked the roster slightly, £25 ($50) for this as a download would be acceptable to me

Licensing would require them to reach a monetary agreement on all trademarks, to license all music that was owned separately, and to have some sort of basic agreement with WWE to re-release the game. This is the main reason the old roster will never happen: WWE wouldn't want (And in some cases, couldn't get) TNA wrestlers on a WWE game, nor would they want Benoit, and I'm pretty sure the old game contained licensed music, though only a couple tracks (There were several trademark copyright notices. One was Gangrel, but...)

Ben-who?

Ahh well

So with the current music themes, like Edge's for example does the WWE own the rights to use that theme in other media, such as games, or are royalties paid to alterbridge for the use of the track?

I know with some older Smackdown Vs Raw games they didn’t have all of the tunes that Bands made

Regardless of music, I’d still be happy just having it

Kane Knight 11-13-2007 10:26 AM

Alter Bridge owns the song. WWE robably have optioned the rights for use in other media (They seem to have done that a lot of late), but they'd still have to pay money for that. The plus side is if theydid it that way, they don't actually have to license it again, so Alter Bridge can't say "No, we don't want our song in this game." They would have signed a contract that means "as long as we pay you to use the song, we can use it."

Otherwise, they need a new, separate agreement.

I wouldn't worry too much, though. It'll likely be a solid game. Sadly, as WiWare, it'll eat up a ton of your storage.

Is an SD card the only other option for storage?

I would expect/hope they release some sort of USB mass storage device soon.

The only other option would be delete the VC games you hardly play and whenever you feel the urge you can just re-download them for free.

Currently, your only option is an SD card.

You can delete and redownload stuff, but it's a hassle, and with an SD card, you still have to transfer things back to the Wii internal memory to use them.

They actually cancelled their storage device plans, they announced that like six months ago. Instead, you get "Check Mii Out" and "the Hat Channel."

All they really need to do is release the code to allow USB HDDs, but they'll probably drag their feet on that, even.

Xero 11-13-2007 07:13 PM

How much space do VC games take up? N64 ROMs take about 25MB. Even doubled that shouldn't really dent an SD card, as long as it's at least a gig.

VC Games =\= WiiWare.

Kane Knight 11-13-2007 07:58 PM

Also, since you can't actually PLAY VC games from an SD card....
