Slap Bass

Can anyone recommend me some good artists who use this technique? I'm talking more in the direction of Funk, Jazz..etc, or bands like Primus..I'm not really familiar with it, but im interested in learning more

omg it's better than sex

Hmm, slap bass is fairly cool but overrated, unless you're in a funk band or some psycho death jazz band like Mr Bungle i don't see the need for it

Standard rock/metal basslines are really boring. A bass guitar used for more than a fill or a background instrument is beyond awesome. The same goes for drummers whose primary purpose is to keep the band on time and at the right pace... music needs more flavor beyond voice and guitar.

<font color=teal>What exactly is it?</font>

Like the name suggests, it's bass playing... but slapping instead of the traditional style. I think Korn use it, ditto Primus. It's a very funk thing to do.

Well, assuming you know how to play a bass guitar normally..picking with your fingers or just using a pick, its a different variation of that you use by hitting the string with your thumb between the top and the middle joint using wrist motion instead.

Tranny 03-06-2004 06:25 PM

I hope I got that right.. :-\

A slap is where you strike the top of the string with your thumb. Not to be confused with a downstroke for a chord. A pop is where you pluck the string with your index, another common technique in slap bass. Pops are generally played on the smaller strings, as the larger bass strings are better for slapping. This allows a series of pops and slaps to come together for most slap bass rhythms. Both techniques produce an abrupt note accompanied with a percussive noise. A lot of muted notes and hammer-ons are used in slap bass to produce more percussive sounds along with the notes. You listen to Rage Against The Machine, so Take The Power Back's bassline is a perfect example of slap bass technique if you wanna know exactly what were talking about.
