Rate The Musician/Artist #31 - Godsmack

Sorry folks, was a bit busy over the last few, and as promised here are the suggested ones that were in the thread. If you wish for me to do one of your choosing, let me know, and give me a second option, possibly a third, I may reject if I wish to save that one for later.

Also leaving these each up for 2 days.

But this time, we have a band who hopefully goes straight out of line, and into the top ten.

Godsmack

They are extremely awful except for 2 songs, one of them being a cover of Sweet Leaf.

I thin ka lot of people are being too hard on them, but they're kind of boring and generic, repeating the same songs over and over again. They're a slightly more talented, slightly less attractive Linkin Park.

Linkin Park and Godsmack are completely different styles of rock..

How can you even compare them??

 OMG, I keep forgetting how totally fucking stupid you are. I'll explain it to you...Slowly...

Their styles have nothing to do with the comparison, which was actually already spelled out. Comparisons, you see, can be done along specific points. Pointing out similarities between the Germans and the Japanese does not mean the Japanese tried to wiped out the Jews, for example. A statement that monotheistic religions are similar does not automatically mean they all worship the prophet Mohammad (pbuh). Saying that two bands are similar in the way they recycle the same artistic devices ad nauseum is not a musical critique equating the style of their music (Only the quality and methodology).

As I close this, I am anticipating that you are likely staring at the screen, blankly, trying to figure out what the big words mean. The Samaritan that I am, I will remind you to wipe the drool of your chin before you short the keyboard.

Saw 'em several times.

Saw them before they got national attention, even.

Sorry, but they're generic live and in studio. I know you have a huge mancrush on them, but whatever.

Everyone says this about every band. How many of the bands that I listen to am I going to see live? Very few, and if I do they are a band that I am in love with so I'll be seeing the show through rose colored glasses anyway. So I don't give a fuck how they sound live. If you can't get it right on disc, you can't get it right.

It's one of my pet peeves, up there with "The White Stripes are supposed to sound bad."

ron the dial 12-13-2007 04:05 PM

If so, they are doing a tremendous job.

Hell yeah, they're artistic as Hell! I mean, they even do their songs live to four tracks. I mean, despite obvious overdubs, they're low fi!

(And Jack White uses the same expensive, processing heavy pedal that Tom Morello uses for his Lo Fi sound, to boot! )

ron the dial 12-13-2007 04:22 PM

Hey now, it takes a lot of effort to sound like you don't give a shit.

Kane Knight 12-13-2007 04:25 PM

Or you can just ask your wife to pick up the drums.

You could have just said "I am comparing apples and oranges" instead of typing all that out..

Except that's not what I was saying, either.

To be fair KK, your original post was fairly vague. Could have easily been misinterpretted. Even by one who isn't a moronic boob.

I have to disagree, but I think I put way too much faith in the average thought process. Reading a statement like that, one should be able to reasonably infer that the line did not come out of a vacuum. And rather reaching for something seemingly ridiculous, one should be capable of coming to the conclusion that the more reasonable answer.

Though to be fair, I wouldn't have assumed the average poster was a huge idiot. Krispy just doesn't understand things very well, even when said directly to him.

I bet he'll make a casual post on this one, too. ;)

Kris P Lettus 12-14-2007 11:55 PM

You are comparing apples and oranges though.. And saying you are.. Your whole "they recycle the same artistic devices ad nauseum is not a musical critique equating the style of their music (Only the quality and methodology)." is ridiculous..

Hey guys, lets compare roses and feces cause they both smell..

Sure the argument could be made that you can compare any musical acts because it's all music, but that doesn't mean it's not stupid..
