Most Surprising Pop

Because of Boot camp and a deployment being back to back, I pretty much missed everything that happened between HBK coming back and winning the title, and Orton Getting turned on by Evolution....Wow that sounded kind of gay.

Anywho, I have been downloading alot of what I missed, and I just now saw the Royal Rumble (2003 I think) where Curt Henning returned as Mr. Perfect.

When his music hit the crowd blew up, and when he hit the perfect plex the same. Now I love Curt and all, but I just didnt think he would get that big a reaction from a WWE crowd 12 years after he was last around. DIdnt think the youngins would know his greatness.

Anywho, has anything ever surprised you like that?

thedamndest 12-14-2007 04:00 PM

I was surprised Bastion Booger appearing at Raw didn't get MORE of a pop. It's hard to tell what a real pop is nowadays, with reactions being edited and all. A recent one would be CM Punk at Survivor Series 06.

To be fair, most fans didnt know Booger when we was active, let alon 10 years later.

I wouldn't necessarily call what he did in the ring "active"...

Dave Youell 12-14-2007 04:20 PM

Steve Blackman on Monday surprised me, I also forgot how much I liked his music.

Johnny Vegas 12-14-2007 04:34 PM

Probably the Steve Blackman pop. Also, since i didn't know so many knew about him, CM Punk when he debuted in the WWE.

The Ravishing One 12-14-2007 04:44 PM

I know this is about surprise pops, but Jericho's return pop was shit.

Fox 12-14-2007 04:45 PM

At Survivor Series 2001, during the WWF/Alliance battle royal, Billy Gunn was one of the last guys in the ring with Test. He went on a pretty impressive flurry of offense and the crowd was absolutely eating him up. Then he got big booted and eliminated, giving Test the win.

I don't know why, but that odd huge pop for Gunn's offense always stuck with me.

NoRoolz 12-14-2007 04:51 PM

Yeah CM Punk's pop at Survivor Series 06 springs to mind straight away.

Some of Jimmy Wang Yang's pops surprised me as well.

BTW; It was Royal Rumble '02 when Hennig returned :y:

On the flip side of the coin, I was surprised that DiBiase got almost no reaction on Monday.

Ya man, I was thinking the same thing. For some reason nobody seems to be getting the pop they deserve

FourFifty 12-14-2007 07:49 PM

CM Punk out poping DX last year :shifty:

addy2hotty 12-14-2007 08:26 PM

Christian when he said "That's How I Roll" for first time in that promo that Vince interrupted. Even McMahon looked surprised at the crowds reaction.

O...........k............

What?

You need to find a reason to live.

Fignuts 12-14-2007 10:12 PM

I already have.

Strawbery crepes.

Fox 12-14-2007 10:17 PM

Those tiny pancake things?

Fignuts 12-15-2007 12:09 AM

Yeah they're like thin pancakes. Its just a french word for them

Xero 12-15-2007 12:17 AM

Then why don't they call them French Pancakes?

Or Freedom Cakes?

Mr. Nerfect 12-15-2007 12:26 AM

CM Punk's reaction at Survivor Series '06 was pretty fucking great. It was hilarious to hear his name chanted over everyone else in the ring, despite being the new guy. Triple H also had to bring Punk into his shtick. Then Punk got jobbed out to Hardcore Holly and was first eliminated from the Extreme Elimination Chamber the following month.

Steve Blackman's pop on RAW surprised the fuck out of me. I mean, these are fans who don't know who Chris Jericho and Ted DiBiase are, yet they pop for Steve?

Actually, when the WWE went to the UK and Ric Flair went looking for Christian. The main event was scheduled to be Batista vs. Christian, and when Ric Flair went into Christian's locker room, the fans exploded. I thought it might have been for Flair, because surely Christian was not getting that reaction, was he? Then he got Tomko to escort Flair out of "his office," which got a huge pop, and then he made his entrance and the place erupted. At least, that's how I remember it. They had to edit out the chants for Christian, and add in some heel heat for him.

Man, the WWE dropped the ball with Christian so bad.

To be fair, though, the fans in 2002 were still smart enough to have taste and expectations. If it were somehow possible for Mr. Perfect to show up today, I doubt he'd get the same reaction. Even if he did, bless his soul, I don't think the Perfect Plex would get the massive pop it did. His win might, but most fans these days are too stupid to appreciatre the Suplex of Perfection.

Because Freedom Cakes looks close enough to "Free Cakes," and we see Rosie O'Donnell enough in the news as it is. We don't need a massacre as she "fights" for "Free Cakes."

I remember back in 2001 when X-Pac had been off TV for a few months (4 months?), he got a pretty nice face pop when he returned (at a house show against Bossman).

To me - it was pretty surprising since X-Pac had been garnering pretty huge "X-Pac sucks!" chants.

To this day, I still think X-Pac was more over than most people are willing to give credit. I don't think "X-Pac heat" was anywhere near as bad as people made it out to be. X-Pac was over with the fans.

NoRoolz 12-15-2007 12:16 PM

I definitely agree with that ^

He got big face-pops during like 98/99. He's really not THAT bad, he's probably in TPWW's top 5 most hated but he's really not so bad IMO.

So yeah watching old videos after reading the hatred of X-Pac on this site and hearing the pops he got were quite surprising.

Also Ken Shamrock used to get some nice face pops.

Hanso Amore 12-15-2007 12:42 PM

X PAC was fucking HUGE with DX. He was a top face in a time with the big names.

Bu after DX, thats when the X Pac Heat started.

Skull316 12-15-2007 01:07 PM

In relation to the 15th show (since that seems to be a theme in this thread), I was honestly surprised at how big a pop Lita got vs. Trish, considering the fan reactions on their way out seemed much different. I remember Trish going out with a huge crowd ovation whereas Lita (mostly due to the Edge/Matt thing) had seemingly lost a lot of respect from the fans. Fast-forward to RAW XV, and you have Trish interrupting Jillian to what sounded like a silent crowd, followed by Lita's music hitting for 1 second and the crowd erupted.

#1-norm-fan 12-15-2007 01:47 PM

Yeah, CM Punk's pop at Survivor Series last year sticks out as the most surprising one I can remember.

Whenever I think about that match though, I always think about HBK eliminating Mike Knox and then asking the rest of his team who it was he just eliminated.

HHH: "Mike Knox... Mike Knox, he's from ECW.... huh?... no, he was part of the match."

LOL, that was one hell of a moment. HBK: "Can I pin this guy?"

GD 12-16-2007 12:13 AM

Kurt Angle at New Year's Revolution. The Undertaker vs Batista at this year's Mania got far more pops than the Cena vs HBK match. Triple-H at No Way Out 03. Cena
at Judgement Day 05. Rvd and Booker used to get poor crowd reactions back as mid-carders on RAW.

Johnny Vegas 12-16-2007 12:53 PM

Skull, i dont think the crowd 'erupted' for Lita at XV.

RVD & Book, at one point, were getting some of the biggest pops on RAW. Still can't believe Book didn't go over at WM '03 :n:
