Shawn Corey Carter (born December 4, 1969) better known by his stage name Jay-Z, is an American rapper and current president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records. In addition, he co-owns The 40/40 Club and the New Jersey Nets NBA team. He is one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists and entrepreneurs in America. Known for his flow and blending of street and popular style, he can compose lyrics without the use of pen and paper. His critically acclaimed album, The Blueprint, was allegedly written in only two days. After announcing his retirement from recording music in 2003, he returned in late 2006 with the album Kingdom Come which sold 680,000 copies in its first week, Jay-Z's highest-selling album in a one-week period.
Along with Damon "Dame" Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke, Jay-Z was one of the founders of Roc-A-Fella Records, a hip hop record label. Jay-Z is the richest hip hop Entertainer (followed by Sean "Puffy" Combs, a.k.a. Diddy), having a net-worth estimate of $547 million.

I've tried so hard to like him as much as some people have hyped him, but I can't.

Nas is the real king of New York

ct2k 12-19-2007 07:07 PM

The RZA is king of New York, the rest of the Clan and a few other trusted 'affiiliates' are his knights, and Nas is the sheriff

Nas and Jay Z are both sick mcs. if you put nas on here I'd give him a 10

Shisen Kopf 12-19-2007 08:39 PM

2, the fucker sampled "Hard Knock Life" from Annie. That is shit.

tman220 12-19-2007 10:12 PM

10, best rapper alive next to eminem

ron the dial 12-19-2007 10:30 PM

Quality first post. Well played, tman220.

Skippord 12-19-2007 10:37 PM

.3

tman220 12-19-2007 10:54 PM

How can anyone honestly give a rating like .3? I'm guessing people overlooked all of his accomplishments over the 10+ years. 10 number one albums which puts him in the same place as Elvis. If Tupac recieved an 85 he should at least be close or higher than him.

Number one albums/hits mean nothing, So what if 10 million young wiggers listened to his music, and bought his albums?

Doesn't mean that everyone on TPWW will like them.

tman220 12-21-2007 12:21 AM

that's not my point...you don't know who buys jay z cd's so you can't assume the demographic. I'm saying too many people aren't taking what he's achieved into consideration. If the rating is based on his overall career in music then these ".3" ratings are just stupid even if a person doesn't like him

ron the dial 12-21-2007 12:36 AM

overall skill in music

They are not taking it into consideration because it really does not matter. They can have a million awards, and top 10 singles, albums, but if no one on here likes them, then they will not get the ratings.

Are you saying I should rate everyone a 10, because alot of these bands and artists deserve alot better then what they got if all thier accomplishments are taken into account.

For example, Skippord, as far as I know, is a metal fan, who doesn't like rap/hip hop that much. As he does not rate them high, the opposite, Krispy, who obviously enjoys it, but rock and metal not as much.

Purely based on achievements, and not each individuals personal rating of the person, or band, with or without taking achievements taken into consideration, would make this whole thing pointless, as everyone would be ranked high 90's.

I did not bitch that Metallica only got a 75, I believe it should be higher, but it could have been much lower, due to the fact that Metallica has done the Napster thing, and last few albums are pretty :n:

Now, if everyone who listens to music were to vote, the list would be crazy different.

In short.

Shut Up.

That was him?

I kinda like that song - not going to change my vote though.

This purely based on how much you like/dislike the music. Accomplishment means nothing. Elvis Presley accomplished shitloads, but I personally can't stand his music. Therefore, I will probably rate him closer to 1 than to 10. That's how we're doing this. You don't like it, set up your own voting thread and good luck getting people to join it.

tman220 12-21-2007 03:11 AM

Who said I wanted to start my own voting thread? If it's based on overall skill in music than how much people like or dislike the music then that's two different things. The voting would be alot stronger if other variables were involved. If someone can give him a 2 partly because he sampled Annie then obviously accomplishments means something. I'm just trying to point out flaws that would even things out with the artists scores

Funky Fly 12-21-2007 03:30 AM

You are taking this shit way too seriously. Look at the list of previously ranked artists and their scores. Lighten up.

Just bumped this to say, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.. I  Hip Hop but am just as big of fan of rock and metal..

Don't try to use me as an example of why your shitty thread were shit..

In the words of Juicy J "keep my name out your mouth and put my dick in it"..

ct2k 03-08-2008 03:44 PM

lol KoOS, doubt he's even heard anything beyond the singles of all of the artists he gives a 0

IC Champion 03-08-2008 05:28 PM

Wow, Jay-Z is easily the greatest rapper alive, and possibly ever. Anyone who thinks otherwise shouldnt listen to hip hop, or listens to way to much underground garbage in which people preceive to be good.

ron the dial 03-08-2008 05:29 PM

yeah that's definitely not true
