Why did WCW fail....Here is what the WWE thinks.

From the WWE magazine

15 Reasons Nitro Failed: Nothing compares to these shameful people and moments.

15. Tony Schiavone
14. nWo 2000
13. Anti-American Jim Duggan
12. Chavo Guerrero & Pepe
11. Vince Russo in the Pope Mobile
10. Matches in the Mall of America
09. Finger Poke of Doom (Kevin Nash drops to the mat to lose his title after Hulk Hogan pokes him on 1/4/99 Nitro)
08. The Magnificent Seven (2001 faction consisting of Ric Flair, Scott Steiner, Rick Steiner, Jeff Jarrett, Lex Luger, Buff Bagwell and Road Warrior Animal)
07. "Crazy" Ric Flair
06. New Blood vs. The Millionaires
05. Steve "Mongo" McMichael
04. Disco Inferno (pictured)
03. One Warrior Nation (short-lived 1998 faction consisting of Ultimate Warrior and The Disciple a.k.a. Brutus Beefcake)
02. Misfits in Action (2000 faction consisting of Hugh Morrus, Lash LeRoux, The Wall, Chavo Guerrero, Booker T, Tylene "Major Gunns" Buck and Vam Hammer)
01. David Arquette

Cant argue, I did like Pepe

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2008 10:41 PM

I would've ended the list at Tony Schiavone.

LoDownM 01-07-2008 10:43 PM

06. New Blood vs. The Millionaires

I didn't think that was all bad :/

JT 01-07-2008 10:43 PM

I liked Disco Inferno and MIA.

NYDon 01-07-2008 10:45 PM

12. Chavo Guerrero & Pepe
Way to bury the #1 contender to CM Punk's title. That was easily Chavo's best gimmick.

That was the only time I enjoyed Chavo. That, and Kerwin White, no joke.

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2008 10:49 PM

Also, Chavo's not technically the number one contender. He lost.

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2008 10:49 PM

ALSO, Disco Inferno was the fucking man.

Shaggy 01-07-2008 10:51 PM

15. Tony Schiavone (I liked him)

14. nWo 2000 (Im assuming this was nWo when pretty much everyone except 4 people were in the group. Yea...that was shit)

13. Anti-American Jim Duggan (Agree)

09. Finger Poke of Doom (Sure people were mad at first but now this has become something that a bunch of fans love....I have no hate toward that)

07. "Crazy" Ric Flair (Completely agree...Even Flair mentions in his book how he hated doing it.)

06. New Blood vs. The Millionaires (Didnt hate it...)

04. Disco Inferno (sure the gimick was crap but he was pretty awesome)

03. One Warrior Nation (God I cant believe that even happened)

02. Misfits in Action (I liked Lash Laroux... sure it wasnt the best thing in the world but fans still got behind it.)

01. David Arquette (Everyone says this is what killed WCW...everyone except for Russo, The man has said in multiple interviews that he did it in order to get WcW coverage by other forms of media and it worked. Russo has no regrets toward doing it...)

The Gold Standard 01-07-2008 10:56 PM

After reading the Eric Bischoff book I think it was Vince Russo that made WCW fail.

The Optimist 01-07-2008 11:01 PM

Hilarious, propoganda. Most of these happened as a symptom of WCW failing, not a cause. The Magnificent Seven in particular were created only months before WCW all-out busted. Some were terrific for what they were, and even at their hokiest were on par or better than some WWE stunts. Disco Inferno, for example, was much much more entertaining than goffy WWE gimmicks or personalities.

KingofOldSchool 01-07-2008 11:10 PM

Master P should've been there instead of Chavo & Pepe.

Fignuts 01-07-2008 11:11 PM

Main reason was the AOL buyout or whatever. As terrible as they were, they were still the highest rated program on tnt/tbs. But when the new owners of turner broadcasting took over, they pretty muched forced them out.

Not saying it was the only reason, but thats the big one.

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2008 11:17 PM

That's what it said in Bischoff's book.

Savio 01-07-2008 11:23 PM

I liked that Arquette won in Syracuse.

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2008 11:25 PM

You can't really blame David Arquette anyway. He was adamantly opposed to winning the title.

LoDownM 01-07-2008 11:25 PM

nah Shaggy, nWo 2000 was Bret Hart, Nash, Hall, and Jarret. Then Scott Steiner joined when Hall no showed a Thunder or something.

It is a big part of it. However, nobody else wanted to buy the program, which does tell you something.

I'm not trying to argue, mind. Just a slightly different angle on the same point.

Rammsteinmad 01-08-2008 01:29 AM

15. Tony Schiavone - Meh.

14. nWo 2000 - At first I thought it'd be cool, but it ended up sucking.

13. Anti-American Jim Duggan - TBH never really cared for Jim Duggan.

12. Chavo Guerrero & Pepe - Chavo rules.

11. Vince Russo in the Pope Mobile - Pope Mobile?

10. Matches in the Mall of America - Wasn't this the debut episode? Come on give 'em a break.

09. Finger Poke of Doom (Kevin Nash drops to the mat to lose his title after Hulk Hogan pokes him on 1/4/99 Nitro) - Agree.

08. The Magnificent Seven (2001 faction consisting of Ric Flair, Scott Steiner, Rick Steiner, Jeff Jarrett, Lex Luger, Buff Bagwell and Road Warrior Animal) - Didn't mind this all too much.

07. "Crazy" Ric Flair - Can't remember.

06. New Blood vs. The Millionaires - Enjoyed this.

05. Steve "Mongo" McMichael - Never really cared.

04. Disco Inferno (pictured) - Was cool.

03. One Warrior Nation (short-lived 1998 faction consisting of Ultimate Warrior and The Disciple a.k.a. Brutus Beefcake) - Can't remember this, but never cared for Warrior anyway.

02. Misfits in Action (2000 faction consisting of Hugh Morrus, Lash LeRoux, The Wall, Chavo Guerrero, Booker T, Tylene "Major Gunns" Buck and Vam Hammer) - These guys ruled. How can this be number 2?

01. David Arquette - At the time I enjoyed this. Like someone said above it got the media attention it hoped to get. I can understand why so many people hated this, and to be honest I'm not totally proud of that being part of the WCW Legacy, but I was a mark back then... so leave me be.

Not only that, but he donated almost all the money he made to the families of deceased wrestlers, or some similar charity. Pure class.

Lara Emily 01-08-2008 03:11 AM

Wow Disco Inferno, a solid midcard worker was one of the top 5 things that brought WCW to its knees :| rrrright.

FourFifty 01-08-2008 04:34 AM

I want to stick up for Mongo but I can't think of a reason I should.

FourFifty 01-08-2008 04:34 AM

And Kerwin White was money.

Mr. Nerfect 01-08-2008 06:10 AM

I'm surprised at how many guys in the WWE made the list. Granted, the list doesn't completely bury them, but as a WWE fan, I read through that, see Chavo Guerrero, Jim Duggan and Ric Flair, and I lose a little love for them. Just a little bit.

Also, Disco Inferno? I understand he is an agent with TNA, but wow, who wants this guy dead? I loved his theme music, and his gimmick was no stupider than most I have seen the WWE slap on its wrestlers.

13. Proud American Jim Duggan
12. Perry Saturn and Moppy
11. Vince McMahon wrestling God
10. Matches in Iraq
09. Triple H wins his 1,000th World Title
08. D-Generation X (faction consisting of Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Hornswoggle, The Boogeyman, The Great Khali, Ric Flair and Jeff Hardy)
06. New Breed vs. The Over 40's Club (2008 feud with those bastard young guys getting put in their place)
05. Stephanie "Mongo" McMahon
04. Big Dick Johnson
03. Vince McMahon and his disciple, Jonathan Coachman
02. Rated-RKO V2 (a faction consisting of Randy Orton, Edge, Vickie "Major Guns" Guerrero, Zack Ryder, Curt Hawkins, Chavo Guerrero, Kenny Dykstra, Victoria, Lance Cade, Trevor Murdoch)
01. John Cena

TerranRich 01-08-2008 10:37 AM

nWo 2000 was the version of it that was around in 2000 (duh) that had Jeff Jarrett as its leader... or something. I didn't watch WCW from 2000-01 because it was Utter Shit™.

Yup, when he made is first appearence he was brought to the ring in something like this:

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/image...ile_afp416.jpg

The last pope used to travel around in something like that, bulletproof windows etc.

The Optimist 01-08-2008 11:04 AM

If you're going to recreate a list of shitty WWE moments, you have to find a way to put in the Hornswaggle McMahon reveal.

Also, I have to point out that the New Blood fued was partly bad because the New Blood were heels and included "new" wrestlers like Shane Douglas and Chris Benoit.

BigDaddyCool 01-08-2008 11:05 AM

What about the AOL Time Warner deal? That had a lot to do with it.

nWo 2000 would have worked if Bret Hart and Scott Hall hadn't gone out with injuries like a week after the angle started on Nitro, and if Goldberg hadn't gone and busted open his hand. That was the whole angle configuration: Goldberg versus the nWo 2000, and it all fell apart because of injuries.

Disco Inferno did suck, and never entertained me, but naming his as one of the 15 top reasons WCW sunk is way too much.

I have no idea why Steve McMichael is on there. It's not they ever gave him the strap or the top spot or anything like that; the biggest thing he ever did was job to Goldberg.

I think I agree with pretty much everything else on the list, even though all of it could be slammed together and lumped under "BAD WRITING."

Outsider 01-08-2008 11:13 AM

Pfft, give me WCW circa 2000 with it's stupid storylines and reasonable wrestling than WWE circa 2007 with it's stupid storylines and fucking awful matches.........and endless video promos. Do I really need to see what happened last week three times in one programme........and then again every week for the next six fucking months?

The Optimist 01-08-2008 11:16 AM

I guess Disco is supposed to be used as a symbol for something, goofy gimmick or reoccuring goofy gimmick. Despite him having something that alot of the WWE roster lacks: personality. If Randy Orton had half the charisma of Disco Inferno, he'd have been in the Main Event scene for several years straight by now.

Stickman 01-08-2008 01:19 PM

3 hour nitros had nothing to do with it.

Xero 01-08-2008 01:34 PM

Equivalence...

15. Tony Schiavone = (Later) JR
14. nWo 2000 = DX 2006
13. Anti-American Jim Duggan = Anti-American Hassan
12. Chavo Guerrero & Pepe = Al Snow and his moose head
11. Vince Russo in the Pope Mobile = God, the wrestler
10. Matches in the Mall of America = Matches in hotel rooms, ball rooms
09. Finger Poke of Doom = Triple H/Orton, No Mercy
08. The Magnificent Seven = Evolution
07. "Crazy" Ric Flair = "Crazy" Vince McMahon
06. New Blood vs. The Millionaires = New Blood vs ECW Originals
05. Steve "Mongo" McMichael = LT
04. Disco Inferno = Jimmy Wang Yang
03. One Warrior Nation = The Union
02. Misfits in Action = ?
01. David Arquette = Federline

Jeritron 01-08-2008 02:10 PM

Lets be honest. The list is for the most part correct.

However they fail to mention the fact that some of these were honest attempts, and other much larger backstage things played a much larger role in the company actually ending.

Either way, fuck that. Its a pointless act. Its a WWE publication and they should focus on 15 things WWE can do to be a better promotion in 2008. I'm sure they wouldn't have to strain themselves.

To be fair, it's just a case of WWE knowing their fanbase. They assume that you're tuning out for Monday Night Football or "24" or something remotely interesting.

James Steele 01-09-2008 12:07 AM

M.I.A. = J.O.B. Squad

Lara Emily 01-09-2008 12:28 AM

I'm actually really annoyed that Disco in on this list, the gimmick is no cheesier than an undead guy, or a superhero, or any gimmick really and quite frankly it was played to perfection by Gilberti. It was a great gimmick.
