They're trying to give people a reason to go for the paid service. Basically, what they've ended up doing is crippling silver instead of actually making gold better.

Its been going on for ages. To be honest, there is no real point to silver. Either have live or dont.

On PS3 it's free, for real.

They have Silver so they can say that they offer "free" online. So that they can compete with Sony's free PSN.
