THIS WILL DESTROY YOU, postrock, and 2008 in general

Rather than make several posts I decided to post a bunch of different shit in one thread.

OMG everyone who enjoys mogwai, explosions in the sky, sigur ros, post rock in general needs to listen to this band.

It's one of my favorites of those released in 2008 so far...

among other 2008 releases I love are:
Times New Viking
Vampire Weekend
Evangelicals
High Places
The Field's new EP
Lykke Li
Nada Surf
Blood on The Wall
and Drive By Truckers

You guys heard of them?

Other good post rock I've been listening to as of late:

God is an Astronaut
Do Make Say Think
Godspeed You Black Emporer
Mum (pronounced moom)
Red Sparowes
Saxon Shore
65daysofstatic
Up-C Down-C Left-C Right-C ABC+Start

I think "post-metal" is worse, personally.

Most post-rock doesn't even sound alike.

It's just a catch all, head-up-your-ass this-shit-needs-a-genre-desperately name for overindulging in soft instrumentals and wanting a pat on the back for it.

The Destroyer 02-17-2008 09:53 AM

It's a bit of a dumping ground, really.

Which isn't to say all the stuff that gets dumped in there is bad or anything, just that a lot of the bands are very, very samey.

Kane Knight 02-17-2008 11:53 AM

Is Pink Floyd Post Rock?

The Destroyer 02-17-2008 12:19 PM

They were the innovators. :shifty:

I know. I was sleepy lol

Indifferent Clox 02-17-2008 01:17 PM

Post rock is more sound based and basically classical composition with traditional rock instruments, various ambient effects, with limited emphasis on vocals. Usually containing songs longer than 6 minutes, although there have been notable exceptions of this.

All the bands I've listed as post rock with the possible exception of sigur ros are very similiar in sound.

You know, if you had taken some music theory, you wouldn't say stupid shit like this.

FakeLaser 02-17-2008 01:43 PM

I'm really feelin some Baroque Avant-post-emo-skatepunk-grungabilly-breakbeat-garde Canterbury Scene-psychedelic death thrash-pre-algebra myself

Kane Knight 02-17-2008 01:47 PM

 RZA :D

Kane Knight 02-17-2008 01:48 PM

Can I use that when I put out an album?

FakeLaser 02-17-2008 01:49 PM

I was merely trying to place your album into a genre, so of course.

Kane Knight 02-17-2008 01:53 PM

Sweet. :D

I used to use Folk-Core until I learned Tenacious D had done the same. Motherfuckers.

Blitz 02-17-2008 03:57 PM

I love zeuhl. There's a genre that doesn't get much respect.

St. Jimmy 02-17-2008 05:01 PM

You forgot Industrial-Jungle-Pussy-Punk.

St. Jimmy 02-17-2008 05:02 PM

Also how the fuck is Ska not it's own genre?

Kane Knight 02-17-2008 05:56 PM

You know, with all the people picking on Clox, he's gonna end up blocking like 90% of TPWW. :D

Bad Company 02-17-2008 06:12 PM

I have never heard of any of those bands.

Kane Knight 02-17-2008 07:00 PM

Don't you read Pitchfork, BC? They tell me what to think!

Bad Company 02-17-2008 08:32 PM

Pitchfork? Now I am confused.

It's a website that tells me what to think about music.

Bad Company 02-17-2008 09:15 PM

You know, with a name like pitchfork I expect to be hearing Moonshine bottles and washing boards.

Kane Knight 02-17-2008 09:31 PM

I think it's called "Pitchfork" because of the hardon they have for musicians who sound like they've had a pitchfork up their ass.

Indifferent Clox 02-17-2008 10:12 PM

None of those post rock bands are in pitchfork... why is bad company mentioning pitchfork?
