Would a new Ghostbusters film work now?

Like, if the original actors, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis, all got together and made another Ghostbusters film... something like your usual "getting too old for this/out of shape/retirement" type thing... Yay or nay?

Xero 03-01-2008 04:45 PM

No. I think, IF they were dead-set on a prequel, I'd write it with only one or two of them in a managerial role with the others somehow being involved in the main plot (one possibly being a ghost, either helping or hindering them). Realistically, in 20 years, they would have expanded and wouldn't have just stayed as the four-man team. Obviously this would mean bringing in younger actors to act as the actual Ghostbusters.

But with the game essentially being the third movie and with the original actors providing the voices, I think it's the best of both worlds. You get the original actors but in their old characters without problems of aging (I believe it's set sometime around 1993). It could also work as a CGI movie.

I would love to see young actors with the old ones as mentors.

Maybe have 1-2 of the older ones already deceased. Like, after the movie, they still continued and eventually there could've been a tragedy that killed some Ghostbusters so they pretty much retired.

Then some young whoevers come in and can either convince the old dudes to start up again after discovering the old equipment in the abandoned firehouse or something major happens and the old guys are forced out of retirement but need some youth to help.

Bill Murray should def be in it though.

Jeritron 03-01-2008 05:15 PM

It'd work better now than it would have in the eary 90s. This is because you have the whole old age thing to play off for humor, and the idea of new ghostbusters under them.

But Ghostbusters 3 is a textbook example of a movie that should be made, and has been so close, but probably never will for god knows what reason. I've followed it for over 10 years and none of the rumors or talk get anywhere

Big Vic 03-01-2008 05:24 PM

Yeah but this is happening to much now like Indiana Jones, Rambo, Die Hard

Kane Knight 03-01-2008 06:27 PM

Considering there's already a planned one, I don't know if we have any choice.

Kane Knight 03-01-2008 06:29 PM

Anyway, I think Evolution showed the concept, however bastardised, still works. I'd rather have young guys doing the movies.

No there isn't. Ramis and Akroyd have said multiple times there isn't going to be a third.

I won't say there ISN'T one coming eventually, but there isn't anything that's been announced.

Xero 03-01-2008 06:37 PM

Huh, just looked it up, maybe there is something in the works.

Then again, what I found was two years old.

Jeritron 03-01-2008 06:42 PM

What you found is one of the dozens of times its gone from preproduction to dead in the water.

It's because of Bill Murray.

There's been talk of a 3rd, a remake, a cgi animated feature, and now there's the video game thats coming out this fall that is basically the 3rd film. It has the voices of all the main players.

The talk of the 3rd, of course, again starts heating up every few months. It could happen, but if the past 15 years are any indication it's nothing to get excited about. It will most likely happen in the form of an animated movie, or else as a remake/sequel with all new ghostbusters.

Jeritron 03-01-2008 06:45 PM

I think Columbia underestimates the gold mine they're sitting on. When the game comes out and sells all kinds of copies, they'll prob scurry to get a movie made. They'll likely settle for the CG sequel since thats all Murray and Akroyd/Ramis can agree on. There's the slim chance that maybe the actual thing will get made.

And no matter what this will be remade at some point, for better or for worse. When you look at the slew of remakes in hollywood, it's only a matter of time before Ghostbusters' number is up

LOL. You couldn't have been more wrong if your name was Matt Boone.

Anyway, there may not be a third, but the fact is, Akroy and Raimis have been pusing for Ghostbusters 3 since like 1998. That doesn't automatically mean it'll happen some day (Remember that Spider-Man project that was on haiatus for like a decade?), but it's a far cry from "There isn't going to be a third."

Porcupine 03-01-2008 08:23 PM

They should make a low budget, GHOSTBUSTAZ with Ice Cube as the lead.

:wtf:

ClockShot 03-01-2008 09:00 PM

I could see a movie being made along the lines of the new videogame that's in production. Maybe have both released at the same time. Either that or go the direction of the Extreme Ghostbusters cartoon. That was the name of the spinoff right?

Downunder 03-01-2008 11:57 PM

They could just do what they did with Batman and Superman.

Pretend the first ones don't exist and start again.

Hate to be the fanboy correction kid, but Superman Returns was a sequel to Superman 1 and 2

It's only partially a sequel, so...

Rammsteinmad 03-02-2008 12:09 PM

I like the idea of the originals being "mentor" figures. Like the GB company really took off and soon there are ghostbusters everywhere. As long as Akroyd and Murray are in it though. :y:

thedamndest 03-03-2008 12:23 PM

I'd see it.

Stickman 03-03-2008 02:27 PM

I'd be for it.

I was watching it with the ex yesterday, and Venkman says the franchise rights alone could make them rich. So they should do that. Venkman as a huckster CEO would be awesome.
