Rate the Musician Week 2: Modest Mouse
 

David Bowie ends the week with an 82 average. Since there's currently only one artist, I'm not going to bother with charting the lead.

This week, I took the suggestions and picked one. The others are in a Wordpad file on my computer, so I can get to them later, but this week, the artist in question is Modest Mouse.

Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Washington by singer/lyricist/guitarist Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green, bassist Eric Judy, and guitarist Dann Gallucci.<sup id="_ref-0" class="reference">[1]</sup> Since their 1996 debut album, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, their lineup has centered around Brock, Green and Judy. Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined the band in May 2006, along with percussionist Joe Plummer (formerly of the Black Heart Procession) and multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso, to work on the album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Since being signed to Sony's Epic Records in 2000, the band has attained significant popular success. Elements of Modest Mouse's early sound have been likened to or inspired by that of Pixies, Built to Spill, and numerous other alternative rock bands. Their name derives from a passage from the Virginia Woolf story "The Mark on the Wall" which reads "...and very frequent even in the minds of modest, mouse-coloured people..."<sup id="_ref-1" class="reference">[2]</sup>

I voted a 7, as I think they're a solid if unspectacular band.

9/10 no poll yet, -1 for them having one of the most disappointing dropoffs in music history as moon & antarctica and before was all 5 star stuff, then they came out with two more albums which are just laughable. Still love them like crazy cause they mean a lot to me, but i just don't acknowledge anything they did since 2004.

So do you count the 0 votes, since it also says I don't know them? Just curious.

Nah. I treat 0 as a null vote. I probably should have mentioned that for fairness and accuracy. Maybe starting next poll, I'll separate the two for that end.

Probably doing the Beach Boys next week. Most of the suggestions so far are metal, and I'm not glutting the board up with just metal choices. Maybe the Who. Something in the vein of classic pop or rock, since most of the picks are probably going to tend towards the modern.

Gave a perfect 10. One of only 3 or 4 bands I would give a 10. They have so much stuff it's hard to like every single piece they've ever done, so I took that into account. While I didn't care for Good News as much as some of their older stuff, I did think We Were Dead was a great CD. The stuff I do like by them is easily some of my favorite music over any other band, regardless of the fact that they aren't even my favorite band as a whole.

Favorite song by them ever is easily Bankrupt on Selling. Would kill to see them live.

9/10. I have their entire discography, and I honestly don't see what's so "laughable" about Good News... or We Were Dead... Like Frazor, I actually think the addition of Johnny Marr to the line-up considerably strengthened, deepened and diversified their sound.
