5 star matches

Please list matches you would consider 5 star matches.

Please seperate these into two categories pre 1997 and post 1997
(that means before and after, BDC)

Anyway Meltzer says there haven't been any 5 star wwe matches since 97 what do you think were 5 star matches?

But I want this to be all over.

I'd say Flair Michaels was a 5 star match, but I think nowadays there are a lot fewer 5 star matches for sure. Like in Japan or back in the 80s most matches I've seen are like 5 star, but things have changed so much or are so much different. Or possibly I just dont' get a hold of the best matches, which stands to reason as people probably don't bother keeping those online.

Anyway do it.

Russenmafia 04-01-2008 06:18 PM

Benoit vs HHH vs HBK at WM20 was the last 5 star match WWE ever did.

Rob 04-01-2008 06:26 PM

Benoit vs. Michaels vs. Triple H was 5 star in my book. So was Jericho/Benoit vs. HHH/Austin from San Jose. Personally I thought Austin vs. Angle at Summerslam 2001 and Rock vs. Jericho at No Mercy were wrong booked finish away from being 5 star as well.

Testicle 04-01-2008 06:28 PM

Kenta Kobashi vs. Dr. Death Steve Williams, 1993.

Really it just depends upon what you enjoy, obviously the WWE cant compete with matches like that hold for hold, but I think that emotion plays a large roll. Thats why I think that Mick Foley vs. The Rock in December of 1998 was a great match, not the smoothest match ever, but it had emotion.

I also think that Hell in a Cell between Undertaker and Lesnar was an awesome match. Really brutal, had a good build up, lots of psycology. Lesnar really showed what a freak of nature he was.

These were great matches IMO but maybe not 5 star.

Jeritron 04-01-2008 06:32 PM

Since 1997...hmmm

The ones Rob listed.
Jericho vs Michaels
Michaels vs Angle
No Mercy ladder match
Taker vs Angle
Flair vs Michaels
HHH vs Austin No Way Out 01
The best match of the Smackdown 6 tag team fued, I forget which event it was at

a few others

Londoner 04-01-2008 06:33 PM

Any match Jericho has been in since his return imo. :shifty:

Londoner 04-01-2008 06:38 PM

Oh seriously though i would add edge/taker from sunday to the list.

Rob 04-01-2008 06:41 PM

Rey/Edge vs. Benoit/Angle for the first Smackdown tag titles was 5 star too.

Yep all the great matches had a murderer in them.

Rob 04-01-2008 06:44 PM

I'd seriously say there has been at the very most 10 matches of 5 star quality at best in the WWE since 1997. Some of the matches listed are so awesome but I wouldn't say 5 star.

Heros Welcome 04-01-2008 06:44 PM

Off the top of my head real quick I got....

HBK Flair Mania 24
HBK Angle Mania 21
HBK Y2J Mania 19

Man..that HBK guy is pretty damn good.

DRBailey 04-01-2008 06:45 PM

Last I remember catching was
HBK vs Benjamin on RAW...

Contentious to be called 5 star but I regarded it one and to me the whole process of grading matches is subjective...

Londoner 04-01-2008 06:46 PM

HBK v benjamin should definately be on there.

Indifferent Clox 04-01-2008 06:46 PM

Not just wwe.

Forgot about that one, this match was awesome. :)

Innovator 04-01-2008 06:55 PM

Most of the ROH ones Meltzer already gave *****(Joe/Punk II, Joe vs. Kobashi), but I'll add Nigel vs. Dragon from Driven

Rob 04-01-2008 07:01 PM

I refuse to hold any ROH matches to WWE standard. The ROH matches in a WWE ring aren't 5 star. The WWE matches in a ROH ring are still 5 star. Granted, it does come down to pleasing the audience and the ROH crew does that great for their audience. But their audience is beyond minor league. It would be like saying some CZW light bulb breaking nonsense is 5 star because it entertains their audience.

Innovator 04-01-2008 07:03 PM

Well the guy said not just WWE, and TNA doesn't count

Verbose Minch 04-01-2008 07:05 PM

Foley VS Orton Hardcore match at Backlash.

/thread

Indifferent Clox 04-01-2008 07:27 PM

IF you replaced two ROH guys who had a five star match (Nigel And Danielson for instance) with two WWE guys (Jericho and Michaels) and they did exactly the same match. I bet people would be calling it the greatest match of all time.

McLegend 04-01-2008 07:30 PM

I thought Benoit/Angle at the Rumble was 5 stars.

Jaton 04-01-2008 07:46 PM

If we are counting TNA, I'd like to throw in AJ Styles/Samoa Joe/Christopher Daniels at Unbreakable in 05. (Or was it 06?) That's probably the best match I've seen come out of TNA.

The Optimist 04-01-2008 08:04 PM

Just matches I can remember quickly:
1996 Thunder Liger vs. Great Muta
1997 Micheals vs. Undertaker - Hell In A Cell
1999? Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz - Ladder Match at No Way Out
2005 Micheals vs Shelton Benjamin
2006 Kurt Angle vs. Undertaker at No Way Out

A few matches that I'm suprised no one's mentioned but I didn't see
2007 Raw Cena vs. Micheals
2005? Triple H vs. Shelton Benjamin

And there was a great match that I saw years and years ago between Arn Anderson and Ric Flair from 1995 or so, I'd list it but I don't remember any of the specifics even the date may be wrong.

The Optimist 04-01-2008 08:05 PM

"Not counting" TNA or ROH is retarded.

Also, can anyone remember an ECW match that was 5 stars?

Innovator 04-01-2008 08:50 PM

Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero 2/3 Falls

Indifferent Clox 04-01-2008 09:42 PM

Rob Van Dam v. Jerry Lynn

I imagine you meant the match from No Mercy in October 99.

There are some really good calls in this thread. I wouldn't even know where to start tbh. I find it hard to know when to give 5 Stars. I'd have said Flair v Michaels was 4.5 stars, but it probably does deserve the full marks.

Angle v Benoit from Royal Rumble 2003(?) has to be one.
Jericho v Benoit Ladder Match from RR 2001(?) I'd put up there.
Lesnar v Angle Iron Man Match probably deserves at least a suggestion.
Angle v Michaels from WM21 is a definate imo.
As is Jericho v Michaels at 19.

Fox 04-01-2008 10:34 PM

Chris Benoit vs. Bret Hart - Owen Memorial - 1999 Nitro

Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle - Royal Rumble 2003

Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho - WM XIX

Damn those Canadians are good.

That seems like an unnecessary dig.

Also it is spell separate.

XL 04-01-2008 11:45 PM

Also, I really enjoyed HHH v Jericho Last Man Standing from Fully Loaded 2000, so I'd give that 5 stars.

What Would Kevin Do? 04-02-2008 01:11 AM

Not going to lie, I hate match ratings. I mean, it's not hard to tell the difference between a bad match, a good match, a great match, etc. But the whole thing is subjective anyway. The ROH board is fucking awful for that. "This match was 3 stars, this match was 4 2/3 stars, no, it was 4 1/3 stars." Shut the fuck up. Why people can't enjoy matches without giving it a specific rating is beyond me.

El Fangel 04-02-2008 01:14 AM

HBK vs HHH vs Benoit at WM 20
Austin vs Rock WM 17
6 - Man HIAC at Armageddon 2000
Rock vs Hogan - WM 18
Chris Benoit vs Kurt Angle - Royal Rumble 03 I think
Mick Foley Vs Taker - HIAC

Those are the ones that stand out in my mind.

They can, and do.

Rating matches without teh whole 1/3905554 of a star thing, is kinda fun. Its shows how much you enjoyed the match, and what you thought of it.

For example, WM 24

Taker vs Edge - **** - It was a very good match, and it did not make Edge seem weak and defenseless, it was nicely done, and well executed, but the submission ending was kinda off, so it lost the 5 star match for that.

HBK vs Flair - **** 1/2 This match was Jaw dropping, it made Flair look strong going out, and was a classic mania match, I would have went to Mania just to watch this, my only problem was that Flair should only have been superkicked once, but still, It was not enough to lower it a full star IMO.

Rammsteinmad 04-02-2008 01:30 AM

Eddie Guerrero VS Brock Lesnar - No Way Out 2004

Plus all the others already listed.

Also, this.

Vastardikai 04-02-2008 02:59 AM

My ***** classics (based on what I've seen.) And I'm sure I'm missing quite a few.

Steamboat-Flair, from Starcade (can't remember the year)
Hart-Mr. Perfect from Summerslam '91 (show stealer)
Hart-Micheals Iron Man
Kobashi-Joe from ROH (not WWE, but just a brutal affair)
Undertaker-Angle from No Way Out '06 ('Taker's MMA style really evolved here.)
Micheals-Flair (way to go out with a bang)
Undertaker-Edge
