Help me fix my internet

Here is the deal.

I have a wireless router and stuff.

Anyway, I bought a laptop with Windows Vista and ever since then, my internet will randomly crap out. Here is what happens...

I'll be downloading a bunch of stuff from torrents or something, then after a while, I will try to go to a website and it immediately says Cannot find server. BUT the stuff I'm downloading in torrents is still going, and my AIM also still works.

So my internet connection doesn't die. I just can't go to any websites until I restart the computer, which is fucking annoying. This happens just about every single day. Doesn't happen on any other computers in the house so it's not the connection or ISP. It must be my computer. What's the deal?

Here's a couple of things to try:

1) Disable Windows built-in firewall and see if it works better. If it does, you can either configure it or go the easy way and download a good, free firewall, like Comodo at this address: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.c..._firewall.html This one kinda configures itself as you use it.

2) What browser are you using? Try to see if the same problem occurs both in Firefox and IE. If it occurs only in one, try setting your connection settings the same way in the defective browser as it does in the other.

If it still doesn't work, I'll try to find something else, or wait for the requisite Bad Company post that will probably have the right answer.

I don't think it's a browser thing actually. Because if I sign out from AIM after it messes up, it won't let me re-connect. But as long as I'm still signed in I can still use it, which is weird.

Maybe it's the firewall.

For now I just upgraded my router's firmware to see if that will help. So far so good but that doesn't mean anything since I'll usually be able to go a few hours before it randomly screws up.

It's not a browser or a firewall issue. I believe it's the fact you are using so much bandwidth at once. I honestly cannot think of an exact solution off the top of my head but I believe 1 of 2 things might fix this. I would first try limiting your download/upload speeds. I would say 90% of your internet speeds for download and leave your upload at like 6kb/s or if you want to be more generous put it up to like 10% of your upload. Maxing your upload will kill your connection.

I think there might be some sort of router setting that might be causing this too. But I'm not sure which one off the top of my head. I'll take a look and see.

Try what DS Said,
Also look at removing the tick from the QOS Packet service, and TCP/IP V6 related stuffs from your lan connection properties.

I've had this problem as well, (and I have the same set up as Trips it would seem.) But the difference is I'n simply surfing the net. I've figured it was a firewall issue but I'm so lazy (and stupid) with computers that I just re-boot and moe on.

Also just updated my network card drivers. Hopefully that does something. So far so good btw.

I also have another problem with my network on this computer. I used to be able to connect to the home network I set up, and connect to other PCs in my house. But, suddenly it just stopped working from this comp. And when I click the network icon in the taskbar it takes like a minute to finally come up. Dunno what that's all about?

Nvm that last problem, just fixed it with a vista hotfix. Awesommmmme.

My internet has still not f'd up after the firmware update to the router and driver update to the network card. KNOCK ON WOOD. :D

Triple A will never use firefox because of Done.

Kapoutman 04-09-2008 01:16 AM

I never would have thought about a lack of bandwidth. I've never seen that happen anywhere. :o

Triple A 04-09-2008 01:27 AM

It just fucked up again btw.

I'm wary of updating to Vista because of stuff like this.

Vietnamese Crippler 04-09-2008 09:32 PM

I really doubt this is a Vista issue :o

The Mackem 04-10-2008 11:48 AM

I'm making it a Vista issue, XP forever!
