I was watching an ECW DVD yesterday, specifically the Taz/Sabu match from Barely Legal. During the match Joey Styles stated that Taz had tapped out Paul 'Polar Bear' Varlens. Varlens was a competitor in some of the early UFC tournaments. He's probably most famous for his loss to Marco Ruas at UFC 7.

So my question is, did Varlens appear in ECW in a worked match against Taz or what happened between them (if anything).

I remember the build-up. It started shortly after the Taz had a "Shootfight" with Chris Jericho. Jericho got messed up in the match, but didn't back down. Paul Varlens then came out to challenge him. They had a "Shootfight", and Taz won.

If you ever wondered how to make an audience forget a guy is an orange midget, have him fuck people up left and right.

That's how you build a bad ass character, right there.

Taz won because either Missy or Tammy blew Paul in order to convince him :-p

It was all a work to reinvent the Tazmaniac character after he neck got broken.. Taz was billed as an MMA type fighter because that was in like 1996 when UFC first got big in the US..

It was a much better character for him than running around looking like a brokeass Tarzan with a jheri curl..
