Computer keeps shutting itself off

My mom's desktop... will just randomly shut off after like a half hour, sometimes quicker. I thought it was a power supply problem so I bought a new one, but it's still doing it and now it's pissing me off. What else could it be? Obviously could be a bunch of different things, but what do you think?

My laptop does it too, although not nearly as frequently. But the biggest problem, is when i put a game in it ALWAYS shutsdown within like 10 minutes. 15, if I shutdown all the background tasks.

I had the same problem with my old one, make sure your video card drivers are up to date, as well as any updates for OS, also take off the side panel, check the Axus(sp?) Cables connecting the hard drive and motherboard (that was the cause of mine a few times) and make sure they are not loose, as the hard drive spins and vibrates it loose, lastly you might want to clean any dust you see away from CPU, Heatsinks, Vid Card, Motherboard, Power supply, and Hard Drive, and lastly, Run anti-virus, if nothing there works, and BC has nothing to add, then toss it off a balcony.

If you've replaced the PSU, then that's a big point taken out.
It could be overheating, what kind of PC?

El Fangel 04-25-2008 01:29 AM

Oh dude, it might help to mention what your doing when it shuts down, that way you will help us in figuring out if your over-working/over-heating it.

I don't know, it is my mom's computer, I dunno wtf she does on it. I don't use it, she just tells me that it keeps turning off on her.

It is probably overheating, I will try to just open the case and have a fan blowing onto it or something.

Bad Company 04-25-2008 02:33 AM

what make/model of PC?
Done a BIOS update?

Triple A 04-25-2008 04:01 AM

It's a custom built PC and nope. Could that cause that happen?

Bad Company 04-25-2008 04:20 AM

what model motherboard on the PC then?

Purgatory 04-25-2008 02:19 PM

Could very well be an overheating issue. Make sure the cooling fans are operating and not blocked up by dust or anything. That's the easiest solution and HOPEFULLY that's all it is.

I have an alienware aurora laptop.

Bad Company 04-26-2008 02:10 AM

cough

Triple A 04-26-2008 02:12 AM

I dunno man. Why though

Bad Company 04-26-2008 03:34 AM

cause then you can get a bios update, or temperature monitoring software to see if it's overheating.

Well, here's an easy program that will hopefully let him read temps without any updates necessary --> http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
