What kind of a 'laptop' should I buy

Again going to the fine folks at TPWW Computer & Help Desk

I am going need to actually 'buy' a laptop, and don't really know where to start. I won't really be playing any games on it or what have you, don't know what other information you need. All I really know is Dell apparently sucks

El Fangel 05-11-2008 12:46 AM

This one is well know, and pricy.

Hold up, you said lapdance right?

El Fangel 05-11-2008 12:50 AM

Friend of mine has this one I believe, serves him well.

Also convince me why I should listen to you

El Fangel 05-11-2008 01:02 AM

Well, besides BC and DS, I am usually the only other person that offers advice/help on computer problems and questions.

Bad Company 05-11-2008 04:33 AM

How much do you wanna spend?

G 05-11-2008 09:52 AM

if you're not going to play games or use it as a media hub, and simple $500 one from CC with do.

road doggy dogg 05-11-2008 01:05 PM

Wait what, didn't you have this whole scam thing where you and a friend like stole laptops and sold them a couple years ago?

No offense, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a single time you've given decent advice. On pretty much everything.

Requiem 05-11-2008 03:01 PM

lol yeah. Your advice is pretty horrible usually FA.

But pretty much what G said above. If you aren't going to be gaming or whatever then you don't need to spend a fortune on a laptop. $500 or thereabouts will get you what you need.

G 05-11-2008 04:35 PM

This thread makes me want to go buy a cheapo laptop for some reason.

G 05-11-2008 04:36 PM

BTW, if you do buy from a retail store, they are going to push accessories and the extended warranty on you. No, no, no and no.

What I suggest:
Min 1.9 GHZ AMD or Intel Dual Core
2GB RAM
140 GB HDD
DVD+RW/CDRW Drive w/ Lightscribe
Windows Vista Home Premium

:shifty: yeah that deal dried up after graduating, and I broke the one I kept for myself. And it was kind of 'stolen' you know so I couldn't get it fixed and yeah...you get it.

THX ALL 4 THINE INPUT

All I really want is something that will allow me to surf thy internet at optimus prime speeds, keep all my music on or whatever, the basics I guess

G 05-11-2008 09:07 PM

Remember that time you were scared to withdraw money from a bank?

Requiem 05-11-2008 10:01 PM

Remember that time you changed your name back to G, you fuck?

FakeLaser 05-12-2008 01:54 AM

Value: HP
Expensive: IBM
Really Expensive: Alienware
Pretentious: Mac

Depends on which route you want to take

Triple A 05-12-2008 09:00 AM

You should just buy an HP. The laptop I ended up buying about 6 months ago after shopping around a lot was an HP. Def best "bang for your back". And the comp I bought a few weeks ago was also an HP after also shopping around.

Triple A 05-12-2008 09:00 AM

"bang for your back"

OssMan 05-12-2008 02:22 PM

I also will buy a 'laptop' soon however I kind of want alienware

FakeLaser 05-12-2008 04:10 PM

Triple A is correct

Bad Company 05-12-2008 08:35 PM

Alienware is a waste of money

Bad Company 05-12-2008 08:36 PM

yeah, Triple A knows :shifty:

Downunder 05-12-2008 11:52 PM

Get an HP

Just John 05-19-2008 08:39 PM

Your internet speed is dependant on your Internet Service Provider, so that's a separate issue. Specs I'd say St. Jimmy was pretty close, but if you only need the basics then 1.5GHz processor (Go for an intel one) is fine, 120Gb HDD space should be alright. Along with 1Gb of RAM*. You can pick something up with those specs in the UK for around £400 ($779) although I dunno what you guys charge for it, that's just currency conversion.

*IMPORTANT:

1Gb of RAM is fine if you have Windows XP installed on it, for vista basic, you'll need 2Gb or else it'll be pretty slow in terms of loading programs etc. As for any higher versions of Vista, I say 4Gb of RAM is needed. That'll probably bring the cost up a fair bit, so I say stick to XP.

Bear in mind also, you're going to need a router if you plan on using the laptop at home wirelessly.

Unrelated (Doesn't apply to NerF): Alienware PCs/Laptop look the dog's bollocks but hardware is very hit and miss. Top of the line graphics cards, but Intel based wireless cards are fucking shit. Aetheros all the way.

OssMan 07-01-2008 11:50 PM

what about Toshiba laptops

Downunder 07-02-2008 04:13 AM

HP> Toshiba

Just John 07-02-2008 11:18 AM

Toshiba aren't actually that bad. Decent parts, but totally let down by the fact that they only ever use Intel Chipset wireless cards. Aetheros all the way. Madwifi drivers are the way forward.
