Question for old timer fans.
Did anyone here really think that the start of the nWo angle was real? I know that's the big thing, is to historically say that the reason it worked was because people thought that Scott Hall and Kevin Nash were really sent from Vince to WCW to kill it. Because I know for me, after Hall was actually given a mic I knew it was scripted. So I thought it was real for all of like 5 seconds as he jumped the rail. But did anyone really think it was real and if so, when did you realize it was all a part of the show?

BDC doesn't believe anything is real.

I was 12 at the time, and at first thought it was real, but then I started thinking, why doesn't the WCW roster just beat the shit outta them.
Plus, I was like, why aren't they called Razor Ramon and Deisel if Vince has sent them. I'd say for two or three weeks I bought it. |
I was young, just got back into wrestling, but didnt know.
I honestly was so blown away I had no idea what to thiink. |
I already read that their contracts were up about 3 weeks before they jumped. So it has never even had that 5 seconds of magic for me. :(

yeah, pretty much. this was before we had the net, so this was just like "WTF".

No, sadly, I was already on the internet and a huge ECW fan.
|
What websites were around in 96 other than tape trading sites? I know there was a couple of magazines and hotlines, but websites???
|
Websites, no, mostly back then it was all newsgroups.
As to the question, the first night I kind of thought it might be real, the second night I was thinking "I suppose there's a chance it's real... you'd think they'd have security throw them out, but maybe they just hope it will sap them some ratings. I agree though that the moment one of them got hold of a hot mic, I knew it was a work. I so wanted it to be real thoguh. |
Old timers? The nWo wasn't that long ago was it?

12 years ago. Twelve years is a long time to consistently enjoy something these days. If it's any consolation, I usually feel youthful on these boards. I think I've seen one or two full Arn Anderson matches and maybe one Brian Pillman match. Even then, I was like ten years old when I saw them.

Anyway. I didn't get into wrestling until after the NWO was formed. I think from a young age I could figure out what was really going on, with two years more of information to draw on it wasn't very hard. Nash and Hall were Hogan's friends from out of the company. They were total badasses in WWF, so it stood to reason that WCW guys should be afraid that they were jumping ship.
I never knew that they were (possibly) supposedly Vince's invaders. I just thought "Outsiders" was a reference to the fact that they weren't regulated by WCW rules, and played easy into the NWO mindset. |
I was young. Didn't really think about real or not. Was still a few years from regular internet access, so this was new to me and I was blown away. It was awesome.
