I heard this today and was quite saddened. Have always known of him and appreciated his work, even from a young age. I think most would too if they were familiar with what he's been responsible for in hollywood.
He was brilliant and extraordinarily good at what he did. The best at what he did actually. He will be missed by fans and the entire industry, but also by those who knew him personally, not because of his work. From what I gather, this guy was the nicest dude ever. I read and saw a few things about him and seemed like the most happy and fun guy, with a lot of imagination.
I also thought his wisdom to embrace and adapt to the changing world of effects, and take comfort in the fact that his work was top notch and there'd always be a place for it. He recognized the greater goal and really was honorable from that standpoint, and surely his work won't be forgotten or even topped in the world of CG and whatever else may come.
Kinda a long and intense thing to write on the matter, but I feel like a peice of my childhood and life is attached to his work and it's inspired me immensely in what I do and strive for now, leaving college and trying to get into film. Felt good to write a little something
