Rock Revolution

Surprised there hasn't been a thread about this. Do you think it will compete with GH World Tour and RB?

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/puzz...atures;title;1

One of the new announcements made at last night's Konami press event in San Francisco was for a rhythm game called Rock Revolution. During the evening's opening presentation, they literally pulled the curtain off the game by revealing the first instrument peripheral, a drum kit featuring six pads and a kick pedal. Although no information has been released on the guitar peripheral, we had the chance to test out the drums in a head-to-head drummer duel set to Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It."

Drum away on a kit filled with all sorts of pads.

The most striking thing about the drums is that they've upped the number of pads over Rock Band's kit by a fairly hefty margin. On the top you've got representations of three drums and three cymbals. The drums are laid out in circles, with a big one and two smaller ones. The cymbals are shaped like triangles, and all three are the same size. All of the pads are placed on the same level, so you shouldn't expect to see the cymbals raised any higher than the drums. In addition, there's a kick pedal on the ground.

We asked a Konami rep on hand to explain the reasoning behind such a distinctive pad layout. He told us that it's been done this way for enhanced realism. Each pad is a dedicated part of the drum, so no matter the song, the large circle is always meant to represent the floor tom, the triangle will always play the sound of the hi-hat, and so on.

After this conversation, we had the chance to try the drums for ourselves. The pads are quite a bit softer than both the original and newly designed Rock Band drums. And for as quiet as they are, the extra padding didn't seem to have any impact on the responsiveness. One tricky thing about the drums is that even though there are so many more inputs, the surface area isn't much bigger than a Rock Band set. This makes it a little tough to hit the right pads, especially considering that the cymbals are shaped like triangles, which even further reduces the target area for your drumsticks. However, we really liked the feel of the kick pedal; it was much sturdier than the Rock Band one and didn't feel like it was bending under the weight of our foot.

Notes are played just as you would expect: You see gems coming down from the top of the screen, and your job is to hit them just as they pass through the markers at the bottom. It's a bit trickier here because you've got seven notes to look for at all times. The Konami rep we spoke with said they're certainly looking to make the proper difficulty adjustments for the higher skill levels--in relation to other drumming games with fewer pads--so that you're not faced with impossible odds.

Konami is predicting that the final tracklist will come in at 40 songs, to be released at retail with the usual postrelease downloadable content to follow shortly thereafter. They've yet to officially confirm any of the songs, but we caught a glimpse at quite a few based on the track selection offered in this early build. In addition to the aforementioned Twisted Sister, there's also some Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, System of a Down, and even Avril Lavigne. We also noticed quite a few songs featured in Rock Band, such as "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?"

In addition to licensed tracks, you'll have the opportunity to record your own music in a studio jam mode in which you can record up to eight tracks on a single song. Other gameplay modes will run the gamut from a career mode featuring real-world venues, online and offline multiplayer consisting of versus, co-op, and band duels, and a rehearsal space to work on those tougher numbers.

The demo that we were shown was for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, but it will also be released on the Nintendo DS and Wii. Unlike console versions, the DS will support vocals through the built-in microphone. With this one, you'll use the stylus for all of the instruments, requiring you to draw gestures on the screen. With the Wii you're essentially playing air guitar and air drums with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

Rock Revolution has yet to be given a firm release date. Right now, Konami has slated it for a fall release. Before then, you should expect to see more details from us on the upcoming guitar peripheral.

Is this the one they demoed with a video showing how you'd play completely with the Wiimote and Nunchuck? I was unclear on this, since that's the mechanic for the Wii version, evidently.

I saw that one and thought "meh," so if this is the same game, that's probably part of it.

Anyway, Rock Band's probably enough for me. If GH WT is good, I'll get it. But I think we need a third such game like we need papercuts all over our genitals.

D Mac 06-22-2008 03:39 PM

If the Guitar Hero guitar works with this I'll probably just get the game.

Destor 06-22-2008 03:43 PM

Talk about over saturating(sp?) the market.

Sepholio 06-22-2008 04:44 PM

Yeah, like there isn't enough of this now. I mean were talking 500 dollars or so to get this, GH:WT and RB2 with the instruments. Then next year they will release new versions with new instruments so you have to spend that much again. It is ridiculous.

It wouldn't be so bad if Guitar Hero hadn't set a precedent for the products being proprietary. You know, one set of drums, two guitars (Assuming you want bass), and a mic (Which, granted, will probably be something you can use with any of the games, since the trend is towards universal mics).

Disturbed316 06-22-2008 05:38 PM

Twisted Sister
System of a Down
Avril Lavigne :love::shifty:

#BROKEN Hasney 06-22-2008 08:13 PM

I think Konami have realised they dropped the ball by not relasing Gutar Freaks or their drum game in the west. That was like on the PS1, they could have locked up the market years ago.

Kalyx triaD 06-22-2008 08:15 PM

No lie, it has a pretty cool set-list (even if they are all covers (never bothers me BTW)), but the presentation is dead boring and the drums are ugly and unreasonably laid out.

Yeah, the drums are HORRIBLE. The GH:WT drums are the best set I have seen so far, they look excellent.

Did I miss a setlist up there? I saw a few titles, but nothing to really tell me if it was gonna be good.

Most of the time, I don't care about covers. Matters even less when I'm singing. Unless I don't know the song, I don't want to hear the real track.

Prsentation's bad, and compared to Rock Band's 60 songs and Guitar Hero promising similar, 40 tracks (Including tracks we've already done in RB), it seems limited. Very limited. DLC is nice, but it doesn't make the base product any better (Especially since everyone else has it, too).

The drums look awesome on WT.

Boomer 06-22-2008 09:08 PM

Maybe its just me having a one-track (Rock Band) mind, but I still feel like the WT drums are missing an extra drum on the bottom. I do like the elevated symbols, but I feel like they would be better placed on the sides too. Just my opinion.

Kalyx triaD 06-22-2008 09:47 PM

I like the set-list. Its more mainstream friendly with its reliance on pop and such, not digging into rock history as much (which is fine BTW).

Personally, I rather this Jap-developed title deliver some J-Pop and J-Rock tracks to the masses. A point of yours is that they do have tracks we've played, and picking up another game to play those tracks with different note charts is a let down. With RB releasing GH tracks as DLC you're getting new ways to play the songs... atleast for this round anyway. What would make RR worth a go-around? I say a focus on modern and international tracks.

It probably won't save the game's poor presentation and WTF drum controller, but I'm merely tossing suggestions here. Don't think I'm hopping on RR's nuts because of their set-list. Damn, give it a rest. Rarely does any genre bring TPdub together so collectively and we're already playing brand wars! God dammitjdspjiBADSF!!!!!!!!jkxcjnbvjdhiosjdbfjlskjdhfbnj;ikshdjbnjfik;ljnfs!!!11!!

I like the cymbals, but wish there was a fourth pad down on the main part. Also, while it would make things more consuming in setup, how cool would it be if you could you know....MOVE THE CYMBALS AROUND?

I definitely agree.

Kane Knight 06-22-2008 10:25 PM

Even if they swung out or something, I'd appreciate it.

As it is, I'm trying to figure out what the fuck I'm going to do with my bass pedal for Rock Band. If I sit on my couch, I have to use my thigh to hit. If I sit on a stool, my foot has to angle too unrealistically to be comfortably. There seems to be like no middle ground for me. Plus, the drums don't extend high enough for me on a standard stool. :|

In a roundabout way, what I'm rambling about is how I'd like more options for moving the kits around. The crossbar on the WT set looks like it'll be a problem, too.

Stupid page timeout.

Sepholio 06-23-2008 03:05 AM

While I do think a 4th drum on the WT kit would pwn, having 7 note tracks to keep up with would be brutal for most of the casual gaming crowd. WT is already upping the ante by adding in a 6th note, after all.

As for making the kit positioning more customizable, I couldn't agree more. That being said, as long as the pedal isn't as annoying as RBs, I'll be happy as is.

Kane Knight 06-23-2008 09:24 AM

You could limit the pads on easy and normal, and the casual crowd would be fine.

Kane Knight 07-15-2008 08:10 PM

I don't like that setup. Assuming the bass is the middle.

Kalyx triaD 07-15-2008 08:17 PM

Taking cues from Rock Band's set-up wouldn't have killed them. I could imagine being able to play all those notes on a hard difficulty, but I won't like it.

Kane Knight 07-15-2008 08:25 PM

I might be able to play it, ubt like you, I wouldn't want to. Fortunately, this game's last on my list of priorities. I'm not even sure if I'm gonna bother with GHWT, so you can imagine how I feel about Konami's attempt to cash in on the craze (For the retarded, yes I know Konami was in the rhythm game biz a long time ago; that doesn't change my point).

.

Get an office chair with an adjustable height. You can find them pretty cheap. Thats what I use.

Penner 07-16-2008 10:43 AM

Rock Band's drums set up is stupid.

They have it going on two pads with snare and hi hat, and then all of sudden it switches to the other two pads with snare and hi hat.

Like wtf

Hopefully GH:WT will be everything its cracked up to be

There is no singing, just guitar and drums and they're not producing a guitar with the game, you have to use a GH or RB guitar.

This game is beginning to smack of trying to help their lawsuit against Harmonix and MTV along, rather than actually be good.

Yeah, my first thought was that the interface looks like the DS equivalent of some cutting edge game. The graphics look decent, but this game smacks of knock off or rush job. The covers seem to range for okay to shite, and WTF is up with not making a guitar for it?
