Next Generation DVD

When I was out shopping on Sunday I noticed that HMV have dramatically reduced their DVD's to £2 - £4 and at the same time that Blue Ray DVDs can go for £25 or so. I know Blue Ray is new so they are going to start expensive before they begin to fall but bah!

Anyway, got me thinking on people who are most likely gonna update their video collection again having previously done it for VHS to DVD. Feel sorry for those who have large collections or purchase the box sets. I didn't really get going with DVDs after being let down by the last change and I doubt I'll get many Blue Ray Discs as well. Kind of reminds me of Jackie Brown.

So are you going to start again with your collection or just have a cut off point and continue on with Blue Ray? Thoughts on the impending change?

See, DVD's are compatible with Blu Ray players. Unlike VHS to DVD, you don't need a separate unit even to watch your old stuff. All units are, by default, "combo" units.

I think this is going to limit some purchases. Granted, I might want Star Wars on Blu Ray some day, but Super Troopers or Mall Rats? Really don't need high def versions. I mean, it might be nice to have them if they're reshot for 1080, but you don't really need higher quality.

Yeah I guess you're right, probably depends if people will want the likely extra (probably shit) features that will come on the Blu Ray versions.

Yeah the change in quality from VHS to DVD was so dramatic, not to mention the complete format change, neither can be said about the 'move' to Blu-ray...Chances are it'll be slow, and I doubt DVD's will 'die out' at all.

Actually, the difference pretty phenomenal.

But CT, you do know the change was slow to DVD, right? That it took until like five years ago for DVD sales to overtake VHS, and that was after they had killed the format (Three years before)? They had to force DVD on consumers, and even then, VHS continued to sell.

I fully expect DVDs in their old format to stop being produced much like you couldn't get VHS anymore after a while especially in major retailers. The fall in price in that store I mentioned speaks to me of them clearing old DVD space to extend Blu Ray space. Everyone wants the latest thing and HD television seems to be doing well so people will want HD DVD's to go with them.
