In Plain Sight and Law & Order

Okay, so these two shows take place in the same universe, as Mary Shannon (Mary McCormack's character in IPS) made an appearance on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and it is already established that all of the L&O series (as well as Homicide) take place in the same universe.

Now, I was just watching a TiVo'd episode of In Plain Sight, and somebody (I forgot who) made a remark about Law & Order, the TV show. It might have been Mary that said "This isn't Law & Order."

Does that kinda blow anyone's mind else a bit? That would be like Spider-Man making a reference to the latest Iron Man comic, but only as a comic, not the character himself.

Bad writing.

To be honest I wouldn't get too caught up in it, through the various shennanigans of Det John Munch the X-Files, Homicide and The Wire are all apparently splattered across that same universe, which seriously wouldn't make much sense.

Stupid People Tricks:
  • Complaints of a "straw man" even when argument in question is not one.
  • Flaming someone for disagreeing with them.
  • Spending 23 out of 24 hours a day on TPWW.
  • Feeling of general superiority even when obviously wrong.
  • Taking arguments out of context ("selective hearing").
  • Ignoring valid argument and retorting with personal insult.
  • Using TPWW to boost low self-esteem through arguing.
  • Accusing somebody of something (arguing tactic, e.g.) that they themselves do.
  • Not bathing. Ever.
(Every time Kane Knight does one of the above, don't take a drink — you'll die from alcohol poisoning)

lol

LOL. Yeah, it blew my mind. :|

I'll tell you what else you can blow, KK.

I watch In Plain Sight. But I guess I haven't paid much attention to the credits. Does Dick Wolf have a hand in this? I don't think I saw the L&O episode with her in it.

The thread is obviously directed towards people who watch the shows in question, douche.

The John Munch stuff is really interesting. It technically connects St. Elsewhere through to Arrested Development, passing The X-Files along the way. If David Cross makes that long-rumored appearance on Scrubs as Dr. Tobias Funke, then we'd technically be able to link Det. Frank Pembleton as existing in the same universe as Dr. John Dorian.

But in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, John Munch makes a reference to The X-Files as a television show, even though he appeared on The X-Files in the same character. So you can't really take these things completely seriously.

TerranRich 08-05-2008 11:09 AM

Oh, I don't take any of these things seriously, I'm just saying that's the first time I've ever seen it done. Continuity blown to shreds and all that.

Well she APPEARED on Criminal Intent and she SAID just regular Law and Order. Totally different shows.

TerranRich 08-05-2008 01:04 PM

Are they? I figured CI was in the same universe as L&O. Seeing as how "Law & Order" can found in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and all.

thedamndest 08-05-2008 05:40 PM

No. One airs on USA, one airs on NBC. Totally different.
