360 cache

After getting my 360 back from a RROD repair, the thing kept freezing up whenever I tried to sign into live. After looking on the xbox site it gave instructions to clear the cache. Now my question is, wtf is a 'cache'? Whats its purpose?

Well a cache on a computer, is where frequently used things (for example the images for mainpage of this site :)) would be stored for faster access.

Re-reading that, Ill simplify more by saying more or less it stores info to make things load faster.

HEXUS has discovered a new way to clear the Xbox 360 hard drive cache. Previously, you needed to reset your Xbox 360, and hold down the A button as a game was booting up. This new code allows you to clear the entire hard drive cache:

Go to the system blade and then select memory. <center>http://media.teamxbox.com/dailyposts...e/thumb_hd.jpg</center>
Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?

Performing this function will also clear any software updates.

Anyway, the cach is for software updates, as the last line alludes to. You can simply redownload them.

Yeah once I cleared it, things were fine again. So its basically like the temporary internet files folder on a pc, but also stores the software updates?

More or less.

Unfortunately, this is as close to a defrag as you can get, and it only impacts the way the updates are stored (and mandates that you download them again).
