George Clooney is pretty terrible

Honestly. everybody freaks out when this guy is in a movie and I think he is pretty god awful. Am I missing something? Am I just not seeing his best work? Ocean's was good but hardly because of Clooney. Know any great Clooney movies that maybe I missed out on?

mitchables 11-02-2008 12:17 AM

Clooney is not amazing, but he is not terrible. He is just Clooney; that is his appeal. When I see him act, I don't see Danny Ocean and I don't see Michael Clayton, and I certainly don't see Bruce Wayne - he is just incontrovertibly "Clooney", in all his roles. Same guy, every time.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 12:34 AM

Highly disagree. I don't think he's the best actor in the world, but he is well above average and he's in excellent movies.
I also find him likeable outside of movies, from what interviews and appearances I've seen.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 12:42 AM

I don't "freak out" when he's in a movie though, so maybe I'm an exception. I'll see it if it looks good, not because he's in it.

Nark Order 11-02-2008 12:43 AM

Maybe terrible is a tiny bit harsh but I definitely think he doesn't live up to his hype at all. Mostly what I've seen him in, he is exactly the same. He has a wit about him for sure but it's just universally the same wit I've seen from him everytime.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 12:47 AM

I think he gets hype outside of movies, I suppose, for being a recognizable movie star and considered good looking.

As for his "hype" cinematically... I don't agree at all. There isn't much of any "hype" for his movies. He makes movies occasionally, but they're never hyped as if they were the next big Schwarzenegger flick or what not.

He doesn't even get the hype that most movie stars do for their movies, I don't think. He's a star but not really a hype machine box office powerhouse.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 12:48 AM

Saw gets more fuckin hype than your typical Clooney movie. And Saw is "pretty terrible"

Juan 11-02-2008 12:50 AM

Good Night and Good Luck was pretty good.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 12:51 AM

In 10 years he's probably gonna be a strong director, like Eastwood.
Same with Affleck

Nark Order 11-02-2008 12:52 AM

He just isn't my cup of tea I guess.

Was hoping somebody could point me towards a 'breathtaking' performance of his or something.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 12:55 AM

It's not really like that. I don't think he's overrated, or underrated as an actor. He's more of a "star" in the traditional sense than an actor who's put up on a pedestal i.e Daniel Day Lewis

His performances aren't even considered or awarded as being "breathtaking", just "solid" and sometimes very good.
I don't think he's even won a best actor award. Possibly for a supporting role years ago. Could be wrong.

Nowhere Man 11-02-2008 01:05 AM

He's turned in some pretty good performances (I'm a fan of O Brother Where Art Thou in particular), but I can never get over that smug shit-eating-grin aura about him.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 01:09 AM

He's "the man" to me, because of his stance on Batman & Robin.

Not only does he take blame for ruining Batman (he basically says he couldn't turn down the role cuz he's a red blooded american male), but he'll also give a refund to anybody who can prove they went to the movie. A ticket stub gets a check for 5 dollars. No joke.

Boondock Saint 11-02-2008 03:38 AM

I would go gay for Clooney.

I feel that same exact way about Denzel Washington.

I made this exact same thread about Denzel a few years back.

-edit- here we go: http://www.tpww.net/forums/showthread.php?t=26974

Jeritron 11-02-2008 04:35 AM

Okay, now I feel like Denzel gets a lot more credit and hype as an actor than Clooney. They're of equal levels of stardom, maybe even Clooney moreso. But Denzel definitely gets his dick sucked more as an actor.

I also feel Denzel's extraordinarily overrated now. He's damn good and used to be great, but I feel he just mails it in as himself ever since he won an Oscar.

Nark Order 11-02-2008 12:12 PM

I feel that Denzel has been in more roles where he can show what's he's got. Denzel is wonderful in the suspense/drama genre.

OssMan 11-02-2008 12:21 PM

favorite role is O Brother, Where Art Thou

My favorite serious works of his were Syriana and Michael Clayton was pretty good too. Seems like a lot of his filmography I wouldn't say he plays Clooney, but he at least plays movies that aren't supposed to be as serious as Clooney himself comes off in terms of his star power. He will make an awesome voice of the Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Jeritron 11-02-2008 12:46 PM

Syriana and Michael Clayton were my favorites as well. Oh, and of course From Dusk Til Dawn

RP 11-04-2008 10:06 AM

George Clooney is amazing tbh. I wish i was George Clooney.

RP 11-04-2008 10:07 AM

From Dusk Til Dawn will always be an all time favorite for me. I didnt even know George Clooney when that came out and i thought he was so fucking bad ass.

Kane Knight 11-04-2008 10:14 AM

I have to agree with the "Clooney doesn't really get all that much hype for his roles" point of view.

RP 11-04-2008 10:16 AM

And Clooney was perfect for the Ocean 11 movies

I suppose that's a safer political move than saying "I have to agree with Jeritron" ;)

RP 11-04-2008 10:16 AM

The only shit movie i can think of that he did was Batman and Robin.

Jeritron 11-04-2008 10:22 AM

Yea, and it's so fuckin bad that it almost counts as a badge of merit. plus the refund thing is the coolest

I was going to say "there's like fifty posts that said that; they can't all be you," Then I looked at them. Holy shit!

D Mac 11-04-2008 12:28 PM

George is cool.

Nark Order 11-04-2008 03:57 PM

Very 1 dimensional to me.

thedamndest 11-04-2008 04:07 PM

He was awesome on Roseanne. He was the boss and he got to bang Jackie. Then that dick Fred Thompson took over the Wellman plant and instituted unreachable quotas.

El Capitano Gatisto 11-04-2008 04:53 PM

Welcome To Collinwood should be added to other good Clooney films described here. Solaris bored the shit out of me however.

Mister Sinister 11-05-2008 12:07 AM

Clooney was the Shit in Attack Of The Killer Tomatos

Fox 11-05-2008 12:46 PM

He is a former "People's Sexiest Man Alive," so automatically he is a talentless pretty boy.

thedamndest 11-05-2008 03:56 PM

Much like that Brad Pitt hack.

That certainly isn't my rationale at all. I can see why everybody here likes him, to be honest. He definitely has many likable qualities as a person. As far as is acting goes, I can only take so much of the 'give a cocky smile before and after I deliver a line' before it isn't much entertaining anymore. Then again, I might be a little over critical because I've done alot of stage acting. Granted stage and film are different, you can still begin to appreciate what is exceptionally difficult to portray to an audience and what is just lazy acting.
