Spielberg and Smith eye Oldboy remake...

Quote:

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's Oldboy, says Variety. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal.

In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Smith who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.

Now, I love Spielberg more than words can say, but WHAT THE FUCK?! This sounds like a terrible idea. The movie's great the way it is, and a remake with Will Smith is going to be toned down big time. It'll become about him getting even, not getting revenge. Probably PG13.
Just sounds like a retarded concept all around.

Really hoping this doesn't take shape. If it does, I hope it's called something else.

It's probable that Spielberg is only producing, and Will Smith is starring and someone else will direct it. If it happens, I hope that's the case since I don't want my favorite director anywhere near this.

Oddly enough, I'm psyched about this possiblity.

I just don't see it being good, even though I worship Spielberg. I dunno

Maybe it can be like The Departed to Internal Affairs. The only problem is Oldboy is a much better movie and seems far more unique/hard to translate without making worse

It's not the idea that it will be good that makes me want to see it. It's just the spectacle of it happening under those two.

Hell, I'm fucking psyched as hell about The Expendables, even though it'll probably be a trainwreck. But Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, and Jason Statham in one movie has me dancing in the streets.

What Would Kevin Do? 11-07-2008 06:42 PM

This sounds fucking awful. I love Will Smith, but no... Just no.

This will probably be competent but not remotely like the original or worth seeing at all. The violence will be dramatically toned down and replaced in many parts with 'action', also the final plot twist will almost certainly not be included, or the ambiguity will be discarded in favour of a happy ending leaving the viewer with no reason to ever think about the film again.

They're the first things that come to mind, not actually watched Oldboy in a while so I'll need to again before I can decide what else will be changed or reworked in order to make it acceptable for US audiences.

SPIELBERG: "What? I'm sorry, I can't hear you from up here on top of my pile of money, cocaine and hookers."

Yep.

I don't remember anything about Oldboy, but I did see it at the theaters a couple of years ago and remember not liking it all that much for some reason. I'll watch it again soon to see how it goes.

This makes me sad. If they remake "Lady Vengeance" starring Uma Thurman I might boycott Hollywood/Blockbuster movies altogether.
