Did Sean Avery deserve to be suspended?

I know Sean Avery is a total douche, but really? Everybdy thinks he's a tool, even his own teammates. Seriously, who would spend a summer interning at Vogue? But for saying "sloppy seconds"? Doesn't the NHL have bigger problems than worrying about Avery's leftovers?

Gertner 12-04-2008 11:48 AM

Just for that game. We would have hadanother Bertuzzi/Moore thing.

LoDownM 12-06-2008 02:45 PM

Where's the Who cares about Avery option?

And it prolly will still happen IF the Stars let him play. Stars play the Flames 2 more times.

YOUR Hero 12-06-2008 06:48 PM

Yeah I believe he deserved a suspension. Mainly because you can't go personal and outside the rink like that. There has to be a line, this isn't pro-wrestling.

Boomer 12-06-2008 07:44 PM

I'm pretty sure most males here would mess with the sloppy seconds in discussion.

I just think that a fine is much much more fitting for this.

To my understanding this isn't the first time that this guy has been the center of a problem, so maybe he is deserving in his suspension.

Triple A 12-06-2008 10:29 PM

Yeah this is fucking stupid. I don't know about his past since I don't really follow hockey but when I heard he got suspended for saying that I was like what???

I would.

SammyG 12-06-2008 11:11 PM

COME ON most ridiculous suspension i have EVER heard of in any sport. His comment was fucking hilarious.

YOUR Hero 12-06-2008 11:52 PM

Hilarious? How so?

More like disrespectful and highly inappropriate. I wonder about some of you guys sometimes.

CSL 12-07-2008 08:17 AM

Yeah, wasn't funny at all. Way too forced, he coulda done something 'better'/more subtle than that. I mean, I love the heels in sports and enjoy Avery's antics in general but this was just lame

This is true in every sense, and only idiots really argue. I just think that the appropriate response is a fine. The only time I can see actually preventing a player from playing for talking is if it's threatening or excessive complaining about the league.

What he did was out of line for a professional athlete is out of line, but saying something inappropriate shouldn't keep a player out of a game, even if he has a past of saying stupid things.

El Fangel 12-07-2008 02:08 PM

For a guy already over the line he should learn to keep his mouth shut.

BCWWF 12-07-2008 10:41 PM

Honestly though it'd be like Quatro Cinco Johnson being suspended for a touchdown celebration.

It's against the rules to do some celebrations in the NFL, but they don't prevent you from playing because of it. It's harmless.

CSL 12-08-2008 04:05 AM

If Johnson imitated/'mentioned' a former girlfriend of his nailing a current NFL player in one of his celebrations, they'd probably suspend him

I would pay to see this celebration

Kapoutman 12-10-2008 11:17 PM

Avery deserved a suspension, not only for this incident, but also as a kind of "lifetime achievement" thing. I just hope that the Stars will drop him and nobody will be stupid enough to resign him. Let him go back to Vogue. Even his teammates hate him.

BCWWF 12-11-2008 09:38 AM

Last year the Wild traded for Chris Simon and it was a PR disaster. Kind of refreshing to see a reaction like that to a dirty player.

Ol Dirty Dastard 12-11-2008 01:41 PM

If it was anyone else who didn't have a rep they wouldn't deserve it, but if you keep spreading it on thick like he does, and pretty much just say "fuck you" to the rules, allllll the time, then yeah, you need to be suspended. He's a classless, foolish piece of shit.

BCWWF 12-12-2008 01:29 PM

I just feel like that kind of goes against everything set up in the free world. If he was a pain in the ass but never actually broke the rules before, he shouldn't be punished for it. Just like if you think your neighbor is a drug dealer and call the police, your neighbor won't be arrested until there is proof he did something illegal.

Kapoutman 12-16-2008 11:12 PM

This may go in the world in general, but he plays in the NHL, which is his job, which has its own set of rules. There are things that are not illegal in the "free world", but which you cannot do on the job. Like saying something cheap to someone with cancer about his illness. Or calling making racist comments. Or acting like a dick in general.

El Fangel 12-16-2008 11:14 PM

The suspension was fine, but losing his job. Now he is going to play with the leafs most likely if anyone in the NHL

BCWWF 12-18-2008 10:10 AM

At least in hockey you can get a good job in other parts of the world.

The Franchise 12-19-2008 08:10 PM

No!

Stickman 12-22-2008 12:21 PM

If it was a spur of the moment thing than I say no he should not have been suspended. But since he planned that out and basically called over the cameras before he answered questions yes, the suspension is warranted. He rehearsed his lines, I mean come on.

YOUR Hero 12-26-2008 04:42 PM

Dallas was shopping him, not only to other NHL teams before this happened, not just to NHL teams but even to Minor league teams. They were going to put him on waivers and assign him to the Manitoba Moose (or wherever would take him) Even in the minors, no one was interested. Avery was by far his own worst enemy. From basically the moment he went to Dallas he was an outsider, kept to himself, didn't try to fit in. Big time wrong fit within the Stars. Hull should loose his job over the signing. Not just because of what Avery did that we all focus on, but because he brought in a guy that was such a poor fit and at a very high price. That's not knowing your team's needs.

Stickman 12-27-2008 12:59 PM

I thought Hull has been demoted some what.

YOUR Hero 12-27-2008 02:49 PM

Not that I've heard.

Stickman 12-30-2008 12:51 AM

Yeah, I forget what it was, but since he didn't do anything that GM's do, he's been demoted somewhat. He never went to minor league/junior/college/european games nor did he pay any attention to it. He just wanted to kind of hang out and still be one of the guys, and didn't really do any work. Of course this is all what I've heard on sports talk radio so who knows.
