Yesss.. upgrading!

Alright, so I've had my PC for about 5 or 6 months now. Love it. But now, I am upgrading more. Getting the following:

New HD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262

I have a 200GB HD right now, but it is IDE, and I am going to use this opportunity to upgrade to 64-bit Vista. (reasons to come)

New Monitor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145

Fucking PUMPED about that monitor. Like, seriously one of the most awesome upgrades other than my PC itself when I got it.

And the reason I'm upgrading to 64 bit -
New RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184

Will give me a total of 6GB of RAM.

PC specs will be as follows -
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+
Memory: 6GB DDR2 (2 GB g-skill, 4 GB Corsair)
GFX: EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS 384MB
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3
Monitor: Acer 22" Widescreen LCD
Storage: 250GB primary, 200GB secondary
Keyboard: Shitty old school MS Office keyboard
Mouse: Logitech G5 laser mouse
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate x64

G 12-13-2008 11:50 PM

I was watching a movie on my square 19" moniter the other day, and I said to myself "Man, I'd sure like to pick up that Acer 22" widescreen with the 5ms response time." Now here we are and BOOM, my dreams are your reality.

Congrats with the upgrade.

Requiem 12-13-2008 11:55 PM

Honestly, that is one of the best deals you will find on a good monitor. They had one that was $10 cheaper, but it only had a 1000:1 contrast ratio, where as this had a 2500:1. Soo, if you're in the market this is a damn good time.

Vietnamese Crippler 12-13-2008 11:58 PM

Fancy :y:

Requiem 12-14-2008 12:02 AM

I am PUMPED. It was either this, or my first pool cue. I only play pool once or twice a week though, so I figured I'd get much more enjoyment out of something I'm on for long periods of time every day.

G 12-14-2008 12:04 AM

WTF, all this or a stick of wood? I can understand you enjoy casually playing pool, but don't spend $100's on a cue unless you plan on making a living off of it. You will be getting much more use out of this computer stuff. It might not to you, but that just seems silly to me. My thoughts for the evening.

Requiem 12-14-2008 12:15 AM

Nah, I am pretty good at pool. I can run out a table a couple times on a good night. Not an amazing player or anything, but I was looking at spending about $230 on my first cue. Usually play with a buddy's custom cue that his uncle made, and it makes a huge difference in how I play. That is honestly not much for a cue. When it comes to pool cues, you get what you pay for. $230 is pretty much average for something good that will last you. I would also have it for some years to come, soooo. Above average cues will run $400+. Starting end of pro cues will start to run you $600+ and on into the couple thousand range as you get up there.

BUT.. anyways these 3 parts are gonna run me $250 after rebate. And they will get a lot more use comparatively.

El Fangel 12-14-2008 12:17 AM

Fucking eh on your vid card bro.

G 12-14-2008 12:25 AM

Maybe it's cause I suck and have always played with $10 Wal-Mart cues and do not know what an expensive stick handles like, that I can't justify the cost.

Requiem 12-14-2008 12:33 AM

Yeah, everything matters on a cue. The type of wood it's made of, the hardness of the tip, what type of shaft it is (the part from the middle to the tip). Like, pros will spend a few hundred on the shaft alone sometimes. I  billiards like crazy. Seriously one of my favorite things to do when I'm not on my PC.

BUT.. I am def. more excited about these PC upgrades than I was about getting a cue.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-14-2008 10:25 AM

Nice one. I've got the same processor and a bigger monitor but everything else I envy.

You keeping a 32-bit OS on for dual-boot, or do you not run many old games/apps?

EDIT: Actually, with that amount of power, you could run a VM

Requiem 12-14-2008 12:11 PM

Nah, just gonna run 64 bit. DS has been running 64bit XP for about as long as I've had this PC (he bought his new one right after), and he hasn't had a single problem running anything. Apparently, a lot more applications are getting streamlined for use on both.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-14-2008 12:16 PM

Yeah, anything new shouldn't have any problems. Vista x64 has a few extra compatability problems with older stuff.

I wanna go 64-bit, but the mandatory driver signing makes my firewire and wireless card not work :(

El Fangel 12-14-2008 04:16 PM

How exactly does dual boot work? Just a question.

Requiem 12-14-2008 04:46 PM

http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vi...creenshots.htm

Basically through a process, it allows you to install both OS's and choose which one you want to use when you start your PC. A lot of people will do this with Windows/Ubuntu.

Sweet, so you could have XP/Vista on the same machine? That would be sweet as I woudlnt boot Vista unless it was needed.

G 12-14-2008 06:28 PM

So could I do that with OS X and Vista?

Requiem 12-14-2008 07:07 PM

Apparently

Yeah, even if you don't have a mac, although it works horribly with a lot of hardware

G 12-14-2008 09:05 PM

Eh, that's looks like a lot of work. If only there was an .exe that did everything for you.

Requiem 12-16-2008 03:33 PM

My shit left Memphis this morning. Also, kind of pissed because the next day, they did some special offer for 15% off ordering through paypal.

Requiem 12-17-2008 05:47 PM

Just got done setting most of the shit up. Installing drivers now. Loving this new monitor.

G 12-23-2008 08:35 PM

I'm thinking of getting this monitor now. Does it tilt forward any? I cannot tell by the pictures.

And what are you thoughts now that you've been using it for a little bit.

Requiem 12-23-2008 08:59 PM

It tilts forward a little. It's adjustable, but obviously not to the extent that CRTs are. I have been using it for a bit now and I love it. It took me a bit to adjust to the brighter and more vibrant display, but I've adjusted it to perfection now. If you've got the money, there are plenty of better monitors I'm sure. I would have loved to get a nice 1080i monitor. But for the price, this is a very nice monitor and I'm glad I bought it.

G 12-23-2008 09:16 PM

I'm just looking for a nice sized widescreen budget monitor.

This is the video card I use, so I'd probably just be able to use the DVI.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130025

G 12-27-2008 12:26 PM

asdfsafas just ordered the monitor. Free 1 day shipping. WOOOOOOO

Now see what you did.

Requiem 12-27-2008 03:34 PM

Wow, free -1 day- shipping? Nice. Well.. I guess you'll still have to wait till monday, but still. Damn.

I'm still waiting on my Sennheisers to get here. :( I am becoming a technology addict. I have a feeling after I graduate college and get a good job, 90% of my money is going to go toward electronics.

Requiem 12-27-2008 03:41 PM

Also, DS gave me his old Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound card, and this thing sounds nice. Took a little fucking with my PCI latency to get the crackling to stop (just some issue with video cards taking too much latency away from the other PCI slots). I already noticed a huge jump in quality from my old onboard 5.1, so I am pumped about getting those headphones.

G 12-30-2008 11:48 AM

OMG this monitor is freakin huge. I feel like I gained a ton of screen, even though it was only like 3 inches.

All I've done was plug it in via DVI and set it to 1680 x 1050 in order to view Triple A's sig better and everything seems to work great. Is there anything else I need to do?

Requiem 12-30-2008 04:35 PM

You might need to mess with the settings on it and your graphics card to get a proper picture. I noticed mine was a bit faded looking at first, but I messed with the settings and it is crazy vibrant now.

But yeah, it shocked the fuck out of me when I opened up the box and looked at it. Haha

G 12-30-2008 05:19 PM

Okay, I think I have it where I want it. Turned up the brightness, contrast and gamma about 12% and it's looking better. Is there any thing I can use my 2nd monitor (19in) for instead of it just put away in storage until we have a need to get a second tower. Like, is it possible to have it just control iTunes or something?

Requiem 12-30-2008 05:56 PM

Dual monitor ftw. If I had room on my desk I would be dual monitoring with my old one.

Hanso Amore 01-02-2009 12:37 PM

You need to get a Nvidia 9600 GT, that shit makes me cum everytime I play crisis

Requiem 01-02-2009 05:33 PM

I ran Crisis on full before. Not gonna upgrade my GPU until I decide to go SLI. At that point, I'm gonna have to buy a new mobo probably anyways, so it'll be an expensive upgrade.

El Fangel 01-02-2009 05:37 PM

I wish we were discussing this in the Tech Forum, instead of this...Computer Help Desk

Requiem 01-02-2009 05:42 PM

I agree. I do not need computer help. I am simply discussing technology.

El Fangel 01-02-2009 05:44 PM

Its not even a forum, its a desk. So does that mean we have the Casual Desk, The Wrestling Desk, The Sports Desk, The VG Desk?

G 01-02-2009 08:03 PM

I think he just renamed the testing forum to computer help desk.

RoXer 01-04-2009 11:27 AM

That monitor sure looks snazzy!

I would have never found it had I not visited the tech forum.

All hail the tech forum!

#BROKEN Hasney 01-26-2009 04:23 PM

WOOOO Just got 4gb of 533Mhz RAM. Gotta love it when RAM prices tank :D
