Civilization IV Problems

So... Civilization IV and Windows Vista.

I can't run the demo. Like, can't. At all. Period. It gets to 'Loading XML' and then has an inexplicable error and crashes. It even gives me a precursor "This will probably not run on Vista" message before I even begin to try and play it. I've tried running on Compatibility Mode and as an administrator, and no go.

But here's the thing. Every compatibility / requirement website I've checked says I'm good. I meet every requirement for the game, some of them with flying colors and great gusto. I've read elsewhere that certain patches required to run the game on Vista--patches that automatically download--just don't work with the demo, so some folks can run the actual game but not the demo.

Should I risk buying it? Has anyone else experienced this? And don't tell me to install XP because no.

I dunno wtf they are saying, cause Civ 4 runs perfectly fine on my Vista.

G 12-23-2008 12:36 AM

Oh and don't buy it. Demonoid it.

.44 Magdalene 12-23-2008 12:46 AM

Well, that's what I mean. The game itself reportedly runs fine, but the demo fucks up. The main game auto updates itself to patch the Vista problem, the demo doesn't.

And I can't torrent it since I'm being closely monitored by my internet provider.

Buy it. Download the patch from 2kgames. I run it on Vista. Make sure you get the expansion packs as well. So good. So fucking good.

Have you played Revolution (the console version)? Is it a huge improvement over that? I thought about just getting Revolution, but I imagine the real thing's alot deeper...?

Bad Company 12-23-2008 04:52 PM

Its like night and day. Revolution plays like a kids game.

Check out Colonization too. Good times.

I think there's a Vista patch so the full version should work good.

Pirate it before buying it.

Proxy your connection, find megaupload links.

You don't know anyone who could download it for you, or has the game and lend it?

Err, you realize that using a proxy would set off red flags, right? Any in-country proxy servers could be legally hassled to give up the information anyway, and using an offshore proxy would just cost more money.

And nah, most of the people I know don't do PC gaming. For that matter, I rarely do it.

Requiem 12-25-2008 06:23 PM

What are you talking about? How the hell are you getting charged for using a proxy?

.44 Magdalene 12-25-2008 06:29 PM

Jesus fuck, people.

Some of the more reliable proxy servers cost money to use. Alot don't, but 99% of the free ones are either fairly local or in countries where it wouldn't be hard to legally shanghai the information--Australia, etc. The fact that I'm trying to remain anonymous from my internet provider while I'm already under suspicion means I'd have to do a complete song and dance routine to avoid

A.) Them legally hitting up my proxy source for info on what I did, thus allowing them to rape my ass

B.) Them being just just suspicious enough to shut my internet off entirely, which they've already showed they can legally do for almost no reason at all. If my computer even smells like I'm hiding something, they can cancel my internet.

My internet, which comes from the same source as my phone, my cable, etc.

Well, you have 2 options then.

1) Buy it. It runs on Vista. Your unique PC set-up may stop it from working though, as with any game.

2) Instaill Linux and run it through WINE. (What? It's not XP :shifty:)

The game is $10 used. Amazon or death from ISP.
