Easy guitar riffs?

For the beginner guitarist

ie W. Gooner :o

What are some of the first riffs you learnt? And if you could link me to them, that would be great. But not necessary

Keep in mind I can already play the following songs:

- Old McDonald
- On Top of Spaghetti

And can already play the following riffs:

- Wild Thing
- Smoke on the Water (the dun-dun-daaaahn, dun-dun-dah-naaaah bit anyway)

Kane Knight 12-29-2008 10:30 AM

Seven Nation Army?

Penner 12-29-2008 10:35 AM

Anything blink 182

Like Dammit is a good easy riff.

El Vaquero de Infierno 12-29-2008 11:56 AM

Come as you are

First song I learned. Now I physically hate Nirvana.

El Vaquero de Infierno 12-29-2008 12:40 PM

But until the chorus, you are pretty much switching between just two strings, so easy enough.

G 12-29-2008 12:43 PM

I also started out playing like the dude on Road House.

Kane Knight 12-29-2008 01:03 PM

Iron Man's up there with Smoke on the Water in terms of songs people learn quickly.

El Fangel 12-29-2008 01:08 PM

Thorough The Fire and The Flames - Dragonforce

Try that out, once you have it we can move on to some difficult stuff.

Kane Knight 12-29-2008 02:13 PM

Don't you think that's a little...too easy for him?

Kalyx triaD 12-29-2008 04:00 PM

Old Snake

DaveWadding 12-29-2008 04:21 PM

Sunshine of Your Love
Day Tripper
Breaking the Law
Living After Midnight

Penner 12-29-2008 04:22 PM

Dragonforce sucks. Don't learn them.

They're kinda fuckin awesome. I dig their sound, I play fighting games to them.

Requiem 12-29-2008 04:53 PM

Yeah not gonna lie.. Dragonforce are garbage. They can't even play their songs live. Admittedly, it's funny watching them completely skip parts or just butcher their own music in videos I've seen of them live.

Kalyx triaD 12-29-2008 05:05 PM

Some bands are 'studio' bands. DF is terrible live, but Hell if "Strike of the Ninja" isn't fun to sing out loud in a car.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to sgand again.

thedamndest 12-29-2008 10:27 PM

Pretty much anything by Black Sabbath isn't too bad. The guitarist is missing parts of his fretting fingers and he manages, so just remind yourself of that if it feels too hard.

True.

Yeah they're okay. You can tell they're talented. But it's just too video gamey for me.

The Mask 12-30-2008 12:33 AM

the burning of the midnight lamp intro is easy, and it makes everyone think you're awesome because you can play hendrix.

AKin3D 12-30-2008 05:14 AM

Time of Your Life- Green Day.

Even if you hate Green Day, it's just one of those songs, that everyone seems to know.

Those chords are just a reversal of Sweet Home Alabama.

So lame.

Also...Green Day - Brain Stew

toxic rooster 01-02-2009 10:50 AM

Yeah started out with Dammit. Can almost play that riff.

Same with Sunshine of Your Love

do you guys use a pick or your fingers? I like can't use a pick at all. like it feels way more comfortable when I use my fingers. But they're too f'ing big and I find it hard not to hit other strings

WHAT TO DO

Yeah, at the starting out will be like that. But you're going to need to learn to use a pick and it will come in time.

thedamndest 01-02-2009 05:16 PM

Both. Some songs you have to finger pick because they involve playing strings that are not next to each other simultaneously, or because you have to pluck them to get the desired twang out of the string, or maybe you just want to finger pick. Right now just get used to feeling your way around the fretboard, and if you can, try to alternate between pick and fingers. Most likely you will end up playing with the pick for most of your playing, but it's good to know both.

thedamndest 01-02-2009 05:31 PM

Really though, in addition to working on riffs, you should start working on scales. They are as easy as an riff you will find, they will help you improve your fingering situation, and you will start to learn about keys, if you catch my tone.

Yeah I wish I would've learnt that stuff earlier.

And he can still back pretty awesome music.

Oh look. A non-unique chord progression. Let's complain when two songs have the same one. Even worse, it's backwards!

Aren't you a Blink 182 fan, by the way?

I'm not gonna say they suck or anything, but check and make sure your house isn't made of glass before you start chucking stones.

You don't need to learn to use a pick, to be honest. Don't confuse people with your ignorance.

Kane Knight 01-03-2009 01:47 AM

While I'm thinking about it again, I'm a particular fan of the main riff to "Rocket Ship" By Guster. It's very simple and plays over a very basic chord progression, but it's fun.

Dispatch has at least two easy ones, "Out Loud" and "Two Coins."

Dragonforce does suck.

Really, really suck.

David Bowie's got a couple of relatively simple ones, like Rebel Rebel. There are really simple arrangements of Ziggy Stardust, as well.

Requiem 01-03-2009 01:52 AM

Seriously. Dragonforce is terrible. Some people think one of their guitarists is a guitar legend or something, when he can't even play his own stuff live. Yet, the real legends can play their own and then some live. Ugh..

Savio 01-03-2009 02:05 AM

eminem till I collapse

Hey, Lars Ulrich is considered a legend, even critically, and it took him 20 years to learn how to play his own song live.

But they're not really good in the studio, either. People always talk about how it's okay to be a studio band, but they're not particularly great it it, either.

Also, I get why Kalyx likes them. He writes video game slashfic. I get why they would appeal to hardcore gaming nerds because they sound like 80s and 90s video game music. I just don't get why they're popular otherwise. There can't be THAT many hardcore gaming nerds out there.
