Christ.

So as some of you know, I moved a couple months ago and shitty DSL was all that's offered in this area. They advertise at like 14x faster than dial up. So my torrents are usually around the 10kb mark. I turn on my laptop's wifi just to see if anything is around, because I'm in an apartment building, and found a connection without a password. I log onto it and am now downloading torrents between 200kb-400kb.

How the fuck does this work. :wtf:

El Fangel 01-08-2009 11:32 PM

Someone else has a wireless connection and were too stupid to encrypt it.

Also, it could be that they have an aircard (I am not even sure what I am talking about) that I think allows you to connect via it to a satellite or something. Only vaguely know about this, but since you have shitty DSL I am guessing thats what the buddy whose Internets you are jacking is doing.

Edit - Just read about them and it seems it only gives dialup speeds.

My guess is that he has an encrypted incoming torrent flow which would allow for greater speeds. I believe a good explanation is in a thread Ogen made about Torrents, Ill have a look for it.

You posted in it, I think the dude is doing what the Hasney is telling Ogen to do.

You'd still be limited from what your connection pulls down. If I'm right, that pretty much just downloads the torrent to the server and you download from that.

What?

El Fangel 01-09-2009 12:36 AM

Nevermind, I thought you were referring to my post.

Xero 01-09-2009 12:37 AM

I was.

:wtf:

I think you two are referring to two completely different things. Xero's talking about the seed box and you're talking about encryption in uTorrent.

Vietnamese Crippler 01-09-2009 01:00 AM

G, what torrent program are you using? Perhaps your router isn't set up properly to make use of port forwarding?

G 01-09-2009 01:11 AM

I was using utorrent, but I messed up the settings and had to reinstall. I switched to bit torrent. I can't even download shit and surf at the same time. The torrents literally hog 100% of my connection. Things were so much better back when I had cable.

The port it uses is closed, but the one on my laptop was closed as well, yet it peaked at 400kbs.

Thanks for clarifying that.

It could be the difference in router setup. The other guy might have his router "tuned" properly to deal with torrents. That or you got the short end of the stick on the DSL.

And Bit Torrent is total shit, to be totally honest.

Also, have you tried a broadband test by any chance, just to see if it's just the torrents and not the shitty DSL? http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest

You'd think that if he tuned his router, then he would at least have the common sense to password his shit, no? I don't know. I'm going to bed.

Don't go use BitTorrent. Go back to utorrent.

G 01-09-2009 07:08 PM

What the fuck is the difference, they look like the same exact shit.

I'm slower than you and my torrents hover around 60/70kbs

G 01-09-2009 07:10 PM

Are your ports open.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2009 07:12 PM

I was getting 5k on torrents which is why I bought my seedbox, then just have to FTP it down (which works full-speed)

Get that.

Right, now first thing is the speed guide. If it doesn't auto-start on first run, then go to "Options" menu and then "Speed Guide".

Click "Test if port is forwarded correctly". If it is, you'll get a webpage saying OK. If not, it will have a link to a site that guides you on opening ports.

If the port is open and you're still getting shite speeds, try enabling encryption. TO do this, go to the "Options" menu again and click "Preferences".

On the pop-up box, you'll have options on the left. Click "BitTorrent". At the bottom you'll see "Protocol Encryption", change it to "Enabled" and wait a while. If it still hasn't sped up, try "Forced" and/or unchecking "Allow incoming legacy connections". (Try only if speeds are defiantly slower as this could slow it down even further).

I did a search and I can't find anything about Eircom slowing down torrents yet, some people can't get them working at all though so you might be one of the lucky ones.
