Where were you when... (#2)

Where were you when you found out that Brian Pillman died?

KingofOldSchool 01-11-2009 05:56 PM

I was watching the scrambled version of the PPV when McMahon came on and announced it.

I was sitting in my basement watching the Free For All for Bad Blood. I had about eight people over. As soon as McMahon popped up on the screen, I jokingly said 'great, who died now?'. Turns out somebody actually did die, and it was Brian Pillman. Then I got sad.

Wasn't he supposed to wrestle Goldust that night?

Did you really just find out he died or is this supposed to be hilarious?

#BROKEN Hasney 01-11-2009 06:00 PM

I was having a wank in my room when my brother knocked on my door and told me.

I wish I were making that up :(

Halbowsky 01-11-2009 06:06 PM

I was watching the Free for All while my parents were out bringing home dinner from a local italian restaurant (ironically, the same restaurant where I saw RVD 2 months prior). McMahon came on the screen and looked very serious which I thought was odd. He then announced Pillman died and my jaw dropped. I called my Mom on her cell (when cell phones were still kinda new) and she couldn't believe it.

Then in the next scene on the Free for All, DX shoves Michael Cole in a shower. Looking back on it, typical WWE

Didnt start watching wrestling religiously till late 1998-early 1999. So I dont know much about alot of stuff before then. I wikipediaed him and saw that he passed late 1997, so sorry for my ignorance but I truly did not know.

Well good to know I wasn't the only loser who watched scrambled PPVs.

Xero 01-11-2009 06:19 PM

I remember coming home from SummerSlam 97 and watching the scrambled version. :shifty:

KingofOldSchool 01-11-2009 06:21 PM

I remember watching Wrestlemania V scrambled and being upset over Savage losing to Hogan.

Well, technically it wasn't scrambled, as I had the little box that unscrambled it ;)

Juan 01-11-2009 06:44 PM

^ As did I. I thought that's what you meant KooS.

LoDownM 01-11-2009 08:52 PM

Heh, when I lived in Georgia, we had 1 TV that would pick up a ppv's sound and no picture and the other just picked up the picture. Never had to pay for a PPV while I lived there

As for the question, I don't remember, think I was at school the next day

Kane Knight 01-11-2009 10:15 PM

Pretty sure it was on Raw. So watching tV?

This..in my basement..after having come in from playing street hockey.

I admit I was depressed for a good week or so after.

Was having my normal Wrestling PPV Party in the den. I remember all the guys thinking it was going to be some stupid storyline or something, but it soon it sunk in that it was real.

Man I was watching like that till Vengeance 2001 when they switched to digital.

Theo Dious 01-12-2009 12:52 AM

And I think it was Raw the next day.

Rammsteinmad 01-12-2009 01:50 AM

I didn't find out until about two weeks after it had happened. I remember I didn't watch any WWF for a few weeks so found out a bit later on. To be honest I never really cared much for Pillman back then so it didn't really bother me.

Dorkchop 01-12-2009 02:06 AM

I was probably watching Raw on Tuesday afternoon. At that time, Raw was shown Monday at midnight and Tuesday at 4pm. The French sports network used to show it a week or two later during the day at some point. Why do I remember all of this?

I found out in school because other people watched.

Jeritron 01-12-2009 02:48 AM

lol at scrambled versions of ppvs. Those were the days. My parents would only really let me order them once in a blue moon, like maybe twice a year, so I'd save them for Wrestlemanias or huge ppvs. The rest of them I'd watch on scramble vision. To be honest, it was great. Some of my fondest memories were on scramble vision.

Vastardikai 01-12-2009 02:52 AM

I saw the announcement the next day...

on WCW.

I thought it was some kind of sick joke. Then, they had the 10 bell salute on Raw.

Sometimes, I wish it was.

HTrain90 01-13-2009 12:20 AM

At my buddy's house - we had just ordered the PPV and they announced it shortly after the PPV kickoff or maybe before the PPV - but we had just put on the channel for the PPV as the cable box had just unlocked it.

Being 9 years old then, I really didn't know anything about Pillman - I had only been watching WWF for less than two years. But the gravity of someone dying really hit me, and it seemed like it was a tragic loss, even if someone I had never heard much of (beyond seeming to be a jobber for SCSA in his WWF run, my only exposure to him at that point).
