Best Royal Rumble?

In your opinion, which Rumble was the best? And, to deflect smartassness, "best" is defined as the one you most enjoy/enjoyed watching.

Jeritron 01-25-2009 05:05 PM

I dunno. Conventional wisdom is 1992. It's amazing. 2001 and 1999 are personal favorites also though.

So I'm going with a 3 way tie of 1992, 1999 and 2001.

Xero 01-25-2009 05:07 PM

Define Royal Rumble.

Jeritron 01-25-2009 05:08 PM

and define 'best' while you're at it

Only one pick. Boo

Nark Order 01-25-2009 05:16 PM

Taker for me only because it was so far overdue and the end of the match with Taker and HBK was amazing.

Honestly though, this is why I was never a massive Hogan mark when I was younger. The guy cheated whenever it suited him at the time. In the '92 Rumble, Sid eliminated him clean, and he turned around and screwed Sid over. Back in '89, he gets eliminated by Akeem and the Big Boss Man, and goes on to yank the rope down so that Boss Man gets eliminated. There's your hero, kids.

Sid screwed Sid, And Akeem Didint do anything that any other 400 pound cracker dressed up in a poncho, who was turned black in the local kmart parking lot wouldnt have done. Actually, I voted for Big John Studd, due to his uncanny resemblance to Grizzly Adams.

D Mac 01-25-2009 06:56 PM

Sid did not screw Sid. Hogan did. :foc:

Damn man... never noticed that.

2004 easy. I know, I know - "nobody" won the Rumble that year. But it was one of the best, most memorable, most deservedly-won Rumbles I have ever seen.

Krimzon7 01-25-2009 07:34 PM

Where's the button for me to put this year? Once Orton wins, and in impressive fashion, I will burst.

This was more of a poll to establish the measuring stick for tonight.

thedamndest 01-25-2009 07:50 PM

How much of the quality of the Rumble is determined by the winner?

Theo Dious 01-25-2009 08:04 PM

I really didn't intend for this to be judged on the winner, I mostly included the winners to remind everyone of which Rumble that was. However, I think a certain amount of it is determined by the winner. Not just who wins, but how he's built at the time and what he goes on to.

Corndad 01-25-2009 08:05 PM

2001 Rumble just for Kane's performance. Even the "Surprise" entrants were kinda cool with Honky and Drew Carey.

I know you didn't. I just mean overall, is the winner the MAKE OR BREAK for the Rumble? If Flair hadn't won in 1992, would it still be leading for best? I like the concept (vacant title due to Hogan/Taker) but without Flair, dunno.

It would depend on who did win. Flair being the winner didn't MAKE the show, a lot of it had to do with his performance, starting from number 3 and going through everything he did. Monsoon and Heenan's commentary was pretty vital too, IMO, and definitely sold him as a longshot. If Flair had wandered in at 30 and done nothing more than dumped Sid, it wouldn't have been quite as good. Same if the title wasn't up. Flair didn't make the Rumble by his win, he made it by his performance.

However, had 2009 been placed on the poll, I would have to say 2009. Big Show skinned the cat.

Have you always been an ass, and I just missed the memo?

Xero 01-27-2009 09:30 PM

He looks Canadian.

Jeritron 01-27-2009 09:32 PM

Didn't you get the memo?

'09. It was a little too fast for my liking, but it was incredibly well-booked. There were very few moments where I thought "A real person would never do that." That seems to happen a lot in Rumbles and BRs, with teammates fighting each other for no reason and things like that. Plus, there were spots I'd never seen before (Rey climbing M&M, Show skinning the cat), and they made Legacy out to be a serious threat in one of the biggest matches of the year. Like Heyman said, Orton became a star on Sunday night.

1994 vote coming right up, no doubt.

Xero 01-28-2009 12:05 AM

I forgot to vote. :'(

KYR 01-28-2009 01:21 AM

Do I dare vote '00?

Fabien Barthez 01-28-2009 01:38 AM

1990 is a great Rumble, 92 is probably my favourite, 94 was quite cool, with the finish, 99 was probably the best all round show of all the rumbles, last years was good, but my god, how well was that match executed this year? Getting all the biggest players in before the 20th entrant is a great move and it meant we got to see the top 5 favourites all in the match for over 20 minutes each at least. Everything was timed just right. 2009 is top 3 for sure.

HTrain90 01-31-2009 05:53 AM

The poll is closed, but I loved 1997. SCSA was kind of a surprise winner, and the way he won it was perfect for his character. Got him over huge.
