I mean really... the guy was clearly out of bounds on set. Just clearly. Fuck the lights.

Couple things to consider.

He's playing the leader of a military operation, and since he's a method actor, he's probably in a mindset of extreme discipline and exact operation, making him more easy to piss off.

Also, a DP should not be distracting the main actor during a shot, let alone twice. A grip I could understand, but the Director of Photography is one of the heads of the fucking production and should know better. When the camera is rolling, nobody moves except for the people who are supposed to, i.e., not the DP. That is fucking elementary, and if whatever this guy was doing was enough for Christian to notice twice in one fucking day, then there's something wrong.

He did flip out though. That must've been terrifying.

Maybe Bale should try working in front of audience in a theatre sometime, and shouting at them to conform to his 'no movements, no distractions, no talking, no breathing' regime.

He's not acting in theater. He's acting in a movie.

Whatever. I bet he went on the phone at the end of the day like, "Dude, fucking Batman just totally chewed me out today! Huh..? ...For walking on the set. Yeah he hates that shit, that's why I did it twice. Aw he's a pussy cat, I wasn't scared."

Yeah and he's throwing a fucking hissy fit. Maybe he should try spending a week sweeping streets for a living, just to remember how lucky he actually is to be earning millions of dollars basically playing dress-up without humiliating people in front of their peers for menial indiscrepancies.

Seriously though... walking on set during a scene? That is elementary shit there. In fact, I always wanted to go off on somebody in that matter for things that really should be no brainers.

They are both out of line for different reasons. As an actor, I would have been upset too, but I would have taken it up with the director rather than to the guy's face. And the directory of photography should know better.

The lighting must have been really bad for someone to think, "Ya know what? They can edit me out of the scene in post - that light is going to be fixed RIGHT NOW."

The fact that the guy did it twice is probably what pissed him off. The first time, he was probably like "What the fuck man? Don't do that shit.." and then the guy did it again, and he probably just lost it. Not to mention, the guy is the DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY. He should know better. Had it been just some average joe schmoe Christian probably would have been pissed, and corrected it. But this guy should know better, as he probably gets paid enough to know better.

Yeah, I get the why the DP is in the wrong, but I think a quick 20 - 30 seconds of flipping out is all you need. For that shit to be going on for as long as it was is ridiculous.

If you turn up the volume, you can hear the guy talking in the background, and that is why Bale kept getting mad. Bet the guy was scared shitless when he told him he was about to beat the fuck out of him.

I'd have to see the guy to believe that. For all you and I know he was the size of Brock Lesnar. I'm not into believing that Bale is a tough guy just because he played Batman. I like him as an actor, but it seems like he has some serious ego/anger issues and this is pretty hard to defend by any stretch.
Sure, the DOP should know better but we don't know the whole story. I would say it's a tad excessive. Especially threatening to quit if it happens again. That's throwing your ego around. Makes me sick. He's not the director, he's the actor. It's not his job to chew out the DOP. He knows he's a star now, and he's obviously throwing it around.

There may be other factors untold. How long they were shooting that day (week), whether he was in the middle of doing press for TDK, somebody he's worked with died a while before, and then there's the thing about good actors actually being a bit insane.

He's definitely insane. Anyone who does what he did for The Machinist, and then Batman right after it, is insanely dedicated but also just plain insane.

Bale: OH, GOOD FOR YOU! And how was it? I hope it was fucking good because it's useless now, isn't it?

Bruce: [Inaudible]

Bale: Fuck sake man you're amateur. MookG, you have fuckin something to say to this prick?!

McG: I didn't see it happen.

Bale: Well somebody should be fucking watching him, and keeping an eye on him.

McG: Fair enough.

Bale: This is the second time that he doesn't give a fuck... about what is going on in front of the camera.

Bruce: I...

Bale: Alright? I'm trying to fuckin do a scene here and I'm going, "Why the fuck is Shane(SP) walkin in there? What is he doing there?" Do you understand my mind is not in the scene if you're doing that?

Bruce: I absolutely apologize, I'm sorry I did not mean- [Inaudible]

Bale: Stay off the fuckin set, man. For fuck sake. Right, let's go again.

McG: Let's take a minute- [Inaudible]

Bale: Let's not take a fuckin minute, let's GO AGAIN! And let's not have YOU fuckin walkin in! Can I have Tom put this on please?

McG: Tom-wardrobe, please. Tom-wardrobe-

Bale: You're unbelievable, man. You're un-fuckin-believable. ...Number of times you're strolling a-fuckin-round in the background. I never had a DP behave like this.

This crossed my mind, but you never know. It's possible that Bale's hamming up the crazy act on purpose. ...Or that the whole thing's a forgery.

McG needs to grow some balls. He's the director, he's in charge, he should have taken control right there and put Bale in his place.

On Howard this morning they played a remix that was just of every single one of his "fuck"s. It lasted a good 20 seconds or so. I'll post it when it gets online.

In an ideal world, this would be the case. You imagine Bale pulling that shit on a Scorsese, a James Cameron, a Clint Eastwood? Never gonna happen. McG however knows that the studio is gonna boot him before it boots the lead in the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time.

How do you know he hasn't already been? He seems to be a perfectionist when preparing for his roles, so this honestly doesn't surprise me. And I doubt Bale would need to do this sort of thing with those other directors because there is likely a much tighter knit degree of professionalism when working with those directors.

He's been acting for years, yes. Since Empire of the Sun. But he wasn't a big star until Batman.

First thing this morning everyone was talking about this clip at my school. We go in for class (16MM Film Production) and first thing my instructor starts talking about is the Christian Bale incident, and then shows the clip to the entire class on the front monitor. He then explains how "this happens all the time with various actors and various people on set, though getting this kind of sound quality and so much of it from a person like Bale is unusual." He didn't seem to think Bale was in the wrong, showing the class how it could've been distracting in particular situations, like Christian talking to an open space during a close up and having the DP walking around right in front of his eye line. That's fucked up.

Anyways, it was awesome. So many of the jackasses in my class were shaken. Amazing way to start the day.

The first Batman wasn't even that big of a hit. (it was, just not really a smash hit. I certainly remember him for other performances, and not that one)

Machinist, Equilibrium, 3:10 to Yuma, American Psycho, The Prestige

All were great movies, and my entire group, and extended group of friends had seen most of those and loved them before TDK ever came out.
