I've still never seen Savage/Steamboat from WM III

Kane86 03-10-2009 02:42 AM

Its good the only problem is Steamboats whole offense is roll ups. I guess thats his finisher (I know its the flying corssbody)

It was definitely the best match ont he card not near as boring as Andre/Hogan. I don't know what the big deal is about it.)

The match itself was mediocre at best, but the emotion linked to it is what makes it a classic.... fans had been waiting for Savage to finally lose, and they got it from of their most beloved superstars

Juan 03-10-2009 07:53 AM

Yeah, some people tend to forget the storyline going into that much. It was good stuff.

Good Ol JG 03-10-2009 09:08 AM

I disagree. I think it's every bit the classic match everyone says it was. Two great performers, a hot crowd, good storyline, huge venue, full of near falls. I wish matches today were half of what that match was.

Fabien Barthez 03-10-2009 09:33 AM

It is far from the best match of all time by todays standards, but 22 years ago, it was far above any other match ever wrestled.

I can only really think of Boxing as an example of an athletic competition where the standards of times past have not been surpassed by modern athletes.

Theo Dious 03-10-2009 10:30 PM

The reason it is what it is was because it was one of the first technical showcase matches that also told a great story and had that much emotion behind it. It was the best match of its day, and outstrips most modern entries. Also it had one of WWFs greatest commentary teams creating a great atmosphere. :y:

Actually, define "Overrated"

Probably more of an acquired taste, but the crowd was hot, the moves were crisp and you gotta love Steamboat's chops and arm drags. Also loved Macho Man's double axe handles off the top.

Steamboat/Flair when Flair wins the title is way better though. Probably one of the best matches I've ever seen.

Cactus Jack 54 03-11-2009 03:45 PM

CBN makes a good point. You have to really appreciate the type of match that it was. It's wasn't full of high impact slams (few were back then) nor was it a slug fest.

The crowd is what made it for me. It is rare that you get a crowd that into a match now-a-days. With the exception of the "2" chant.

Ol Dirty Dastard 03-11-2009 10:56 PM

Thing is tho, a match like that could still work today. It didn't need to have high impact slams, because every single move counted, and was delivered properly. Nowadays guys throw punches like they don't matter, even as early as the early- mid 90s, landing any blow meant something. Now everyone no sells everything, it's fuckin stupid. The only guys capable of having a great oldschool match really, are Michaels and Taker. Though I have to say, Orton shows some of that style when I see him wrestle.

DaveWadding 03-11-2009 11:33 PM

Is it a fucking GREAT match? Yeah...but I hear way too much "greatest match of all time" talk...It's not. If I made a top 50 or even a top 25 it would be there...but in the top 5? Not even. I'm not saying it's a bad match but it's incredibly overrated.

Ol Dirty Dastard 03-11-2009 11:50 PM

Yeah not tops of all time that's for sure. Just a really great match.

You're right about that.

The moves were very crisp. This match would work today. It be like Benoit and Angle-ish.
